Monthly Activity – Ultimo Historical & Architectural Walking Tour (WAITLIST)

Thursday, October 22, 2020 @ 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Colonial settlement of the inner city urban village of Ultimo began in 1803, when 34 acres was granted to surgeon, John Harris, on lands traditionally inhabited by the Gadigal peoples of the Eora nation.

In the 1890s Sydney Technical College was established, putting Ultimo on the cultural map. Twentieth and twenty-first century additions of educational buildings have reinforced Ultimo’s reputation as a centre for learning, while its surroundings became increasingly industrial in nature, including slaughterhouses, quarrying operations and rental properties.

On this two-hour walking tour, you will see and hear amazing stories about the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, a university building that has been described as the most beautiful squashed paper bag, and a building about a pandemic.  Adding to the tour is a beautifully designed college built in Romanesque Revival Style which features carvings of Australian animals and flowers in the facade.

There is so much to see and hear about this urban village, including the Goods Line which was transformed from a disused freight railway.
