Join us on a short, guided walk through a small area of Historical Annandale, the first planned subdivision in New South Wales. Our walk will commence on the Corner of Johnston and Booth Streets and proceed to the Heritage Listed, Gothic Revival Style Hunter Baillie Memorial Church. Hunter Baillie’s 56 metre Spire has dominated the landscape since the church opened in 1889. From there we will proceed past St Brendan’s Catholic Church and The Mary McKillop Convent to our destination the Annandale Art Gallery.
Bill and Anne Gregory opened Annandale Galleries in 1991 in a converted Masonic Hall. The large space that the Galleries provide stem from the building’s initial construction as a Methodist church. The aim of Annandale Galleries is to show the best of Australian and international contemporary art. The Galleries have won acclaim and built a prominent reputation through showing the work of leading Aboriginal artists. Annandale Galleries represents Indigenous communities in Maningrida and Yirrkala, both in North East Arnhem Land, with regular exhibitions of barks and various free standing sculpture. The gallery also specialises in European modern masters such as Picasso, Matisse, Miro and Chagall. We will view the current exhibition: Elements of Sympathy
Our walk will finish at the Art Deco North Annandale Hotel, listed by the Australian Institute of Architects in the Register of significant 20th Century buildings. You may wish to join us for a Pub Lunch.
