SUMMARY:Theatre Group – 8 November 2023 – ‘The Dictionary of Lost Words’ - STC
DESCRIPTION:Adapted by Verity Laughton from the novel by Pip Williams\nDirected by Jessica Arthur \nDiscover the secret power of words \nPip Williams’ award-winning New York Times bestseller and book club favourite\, The Dictionary of Lost Words\, is brought to vivid life in a new adaptation for the stage by Verity Laughton and directed by one of Australia’s best directors\, Jessica Arthur. \nIt’s 1886 and the very first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary is being compiled. Four-year-old Esme Nicoll has a front row seat. Well\, she’s hiding under the sorting table\, anyway. As her father and his male colleagues decide which words stay and which go\, Esme collects the discarded (often gendered) scraps to compile her own far more radical\, far more magical dictionary. \nA sweeping historical tale in the spirit of The Harp in the South\, The Dictionary of Lost Words follows Esme from her childhood in the 1880s\, into adulthood at the height of the women’s suffrage movement and the beginning of the First World War. \nThis novel has captured the imagination of hundreds of thousands of readers around the globe\, and was recommended by book club trendsetters like Reese Witherspoon. In 2023\, Verity Laughton’s adaptation unfurls this beautiful and transportive reflection on the love between a daughter and her father\, at a time when the women’s rights movement was first gaining traction\, into a delectable and warm night of theatre. \nApprox. duration 2 hrs 20 mins (including interval)\nContent Strong language \nDATE: Wednesday 8 November 2023 \nTIME: 7.30pm \nVENUE: Drama Theatre\, Sydney Opera House \nTICKETS: Single Tickets – Adult A Reserve $114\, Seniors Concession $109 \nJudith and Cherry have purchased tickets J6 and J7 \n To buy your tickets visit https://www.sydneytheatre.com.au/whats-on \nPRE-THEATRE: (Optional): Join Judith and Cherry for pre-theatre Drinks and Chat at the Sydney Opera Bar\, on the Lower Concourse Level at 6.00pm. \nRSVP TO: Judith Nguyen at nguyenjm@bigpond.net.au \nRSVP BY: 1 November 2023 \nTHEATRE GROUP – Looking Ahead in 2023 \nOur remaining play for the year is shown below. \n\n\n\nDate & Day\nPlay\nType\nTheatre\n   Time\n Seats (Convenors)\n\n\n2 December (Saturday)\nThe Seagull (MATINEE)\nNew interpretation of Chekhov’s masterpiece\nRoslyn Packer Theatre (STC)\n1.30pm\nD11\, D12 (A Reserve)

SUMMARY:Challenging Walk – The Sixth Leg of Bondi to Manly Walk – Spit Bridge - Manly Wharf
DESCRIPTION:At the end of 2018\, six city councils along with other agencies\, decided to create a coastal and harbour-side walking track between two famous beaches in Sydney\, Bondi Beach and Manly Beach. The details can be found on www.bonditomanly.com or the B2M app. We will walk the Bondi to Manly Walk in seven stages together\, walking one stage at a time on the first Tuesday of the month from June to December. \nIn November\, we will do the sixth leg of Bondi to Manly Walk from Spit Bridge to Manly Wharf. Along the way\, be on the lookout for Aboriginal Rock Engravings and Shell Middens. Heading back towards Manly\, the trail continues along to Dobroyd Head\, passing Indigenous Australian Rock Engravings and Heritage Sites. Along this part of the walk there are many viewpoints\, such as Arabanoo Lookout\, Reef Bay and Delwood Beach\, all of which have glistening views of Middle Harbour and Sydney’s Headlands. Continuing to Manly Wharf\, we’ll pass Federation Point\, Manly Walkway of Olympians and Manly Cove. SUMMARY:Theatre Group – ‘Blaque Showgirls’ – Griffin/SBW Stables Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Plumage! Puns! Political incorrectness gone mad! \nA lonely kid in rural Australia\, fair-skinned Sarah Jane Jones is deathly sure of two things: 1. She’s the best dancer in the whole town of Chithole\, and 2. She’s a proud Aboriginal woman. There’s very little proof of either of these things. \nSo\, when a long-lost photograph offers hope of her Indigenous ancestry\, Sarah Jane high-tails it to the glitziest casino in Brisvegas. Her mission? SUMMARY:Challenging Walk – The Fifth Leg of Bondi to Manly Walk – Taronga Zoo Wharf to Spit Bridge
DESCRIPTION:At the end of 2018\, six city councils along with other agencies\, decided to create a coastal and harbour-side walking track between two famous beaches in Sydney\, Bondi Beach and Manly Beach. The result of this collaboration is the epic 80km Bondi to Manly Walk. The details can be found on www.bonditomanly.com or the B2M app. We will walk the Bondi to Manly Walk in seven stages together\, walking one stage at a time on the first Tuesday of the month from June to December. \nIn October\, we will do the fifth leg of Bondi to Manly Walk from Taronga Zoo Wharf to Spit Bridge. The walk is approximately 12km with an elevation gain of 214m. The walk will take around 3 hours to complete. \nStarting off at Taronga Zoo\, we will continue walking around to Bradleys Head and then on to Georges Head and Middle Head; where we will find some of Sydney’s oldest defence systems of gun batteries and tunnels\, dating back to the 19th century. Continuing from Middle Head\, we will reach Balmoral Oval and Balmoral Beach where we can explore the various historical parts of the popular beach\, such as the old tram sheds\, the Rotunda and Rocky Point Island. From Balmoral\, we will pass Chinamans Beach and Rosherville Reserve\, located along Parriwi Head and then we will finally reach the Spit Bridge. (Excerpts from www.bonditomanly.com). \nMore details will be sent to members who are participating closer to the event date. \nDATE:  Tuesday 3 October 2023 \nTIME: 9.10am at Circular Quay Wharf 4 (after you tap on) for the 9:20am ferry to Taronga Zoo \nLUNCH: Please bring your own lunch for a picnic  or alternatively grab a quick  takeway lunch ( burger\, pizza\, fish and chips\, etc)  at Grumpy’s Wharf at the end of the walk at 235 Spit Road\, Mosman. Bus stop to go home is near this café/takeaway venue. \nRSVP TO:  Fritzi Casal at fritzicasal@gmail.com \nRSVP BY: 29 September 2023

SUMMARY:Special Event - The River Postman
DESCRIPTION:Join The Riverboat Postman as it delivers the mail on behalf of Australia Post to the isolated water-access-only settlements on the Hawkesbury River at Brooklyn. Easy access by rail and road make this the perfect day trip from Sydney or Newcastle and the Central Coast. Three hour cruise includes morning tea and lunch on board\, and all boats are fully licensed. \nOur ticket includes a three hour mail delivery cruise of the Hawkesbury. Boats depart at 10am every weekday (except Public Holidays). \nMorning tea is served on departure\, with percolated coffee\, hot tea\, and delicious home-made ANZAC biscuits – we would bet you haven’t had them like this before! \nLunch\, which is served around midday\, consists of a very Aussie Ploughman’s-style plate with shaved ham\, tasty cheese\, tomato\, zucchini\, carrot\, mixed lettuce\, pickled onions\, fresh Turkish Bread roll\, pickles\, fruit chutney\, butter & Italian dressing. \nWe can cater for the common dietary requirements (gluten free\, vegetarian etc)  – just let us know at the time of booking. \nAll our boats are fully licensed\, so you can enjoy a glass of wine or beer\, or a soft drink\, with your lunch. Water is always available at the bar. \nDATE: Wednesday September 27 2023 \nTIME: 10am – 1pm \nVENUE: Brooklyn Postie Wharf\, Dangar Rd \nBrooklyn\, NSW\, Australia 2083 \nCOST: Seniors $54\, Adults $64 \nRSVP TO: jill.mclean@jarie.com.au \nRSVP BY: August 27 2023 \nPAYMENT OPTIONS: Call 0400600111 direct to the RiverBoat Postman \, say it is for the SWIC booking and pay over the phone by credit card \nTRANSPORT: \nJust an hour from Sydney’s CBD\, The Riverboat Postman offers the perfect day trip for locals and tourists alike. You can’t miss us – we are right next to the train platform at the Hawkesbury River Station\, Brooklyn\, on Dangar Rd. \nIf you are coming by train\, WE NOW HAVE A LIFT AT THE STATION! It is by far the easiest way to get to Brooklyn\, and the trains which arrive from Newcastle at about 9.26am and from Sydney at 9.47am still allow plenty of time to get to the wharf. We usually return at about 1.10pm\, in time to catch the 1.24pm train towards Sydney  (the next one is 2.24pm if we are late back) and the 1.46pm train north. For timetable information\, use www.131500.com. Our station is called Hawkesbury River\, and our train from Sydney Central station departs from Platform 12 at 8.45am (always check before you get on!) \nIf you are coming by car\, there is usually enough parking at this time of the day. Parking in Brooklyn is free\, some is timed parking (4 hours\, which is more than enough as the cruise is just over 3 hours long) and some is untimed. There is limited specified disabled parking beside our shed\, and if necessary you can drive right up to the wharf\, drop off passengers then park the car. Parking on Sundays is particularly horrible\, so come by train if you can. \nIf you have a GPS in your car\, use ‘Dangar Road\, Brooklyn’ as the address. \nIf not\, take the Brooklyn/Mooney Mooney exit off the Freeway\, or Pacific Motorway (M1)\, follow all the signs to Brooklyn (these will bring you over the old Pacific Hwy bridge to the Sydney side of the river) and turn left onto Brooklyn Rd. Go all the way to the end of it and turn left when you can go no further. There we will be!
