Nikkei also offers a list of very interesting alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails. SUMMARY:East Meets West Lunch – Amah by Ho Jiak Restaurant
DESCRIPTION:This month we go for Malaysian at Amah by Ho Jiak Restaurant at the Chatswood Interchange. Amah means grandmother in a few Chinese dialects. Amah’s Head Chef is Hun Loong who was the former Head Chef of Mr. Wong\, along with Executive Chef of Ho Jiak\, Junda Khoo\, bring flair and sophistication to home-style Malaysian cooking in an ode to Loong’s late grandmother – the sole reason for the restaurant’s inception. \nMalaysian food is a lot more than just Laksa. Malaysian cuisine is a result of historical migrations from many different countries. Malaysian citizens today consist of the ethnic groups Malay Bumiputera (67.4%)\, Chinese (24.6%)\, Indians (7.3%) and Others (0.7%). \nThe Malaysians are spoiled for a myriad of choices when they eat out. You might have been confused in the past when you had Malaysian dishes – why do they taste just like Chinese food\, sometimes totally Indian\, sometimes very similar to Indonesian (Malay Bumiputera)? They are all Malaysian. SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - Tour of Cockatoo Island: Sandstone to Steel
DESCRIPTION:Known as Wareamah by the Wallumedegal\, Wangal\, Cammeraygal and Gadigal Peoples\, Cockatoo Island is a former convict penal establishment and naval shipyard\, located in the heart of Sydney Harbour. \nCockatoo Island is a source of intrigue and inspiration for visitors owing to its heritage buildings\, distinctive terrain and panoramic views. Popular attractions include heritage and campground accommodation\, waterfront cafés and picnic spots\, guided history and paranormal tours\, and exciting seasonal events. Located at the junction of the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers\, Cockatoo Island is just a ferry ride away. \nCockatoo Island has strong continued ties to the First Nations people\, having served as a meeting place for the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the region prior to colonisation. \nMeanwhile\, the heritage buildings and distinctive terrain offer insights into the complex and layered history of the island’s former convict penal establishment\, naval ship dockyard\, and industrial school for girls and reformatory. \nWe will be taking the Sandstone to Steel Tour where we will be given a crash course in the storied history of Cockatoo Island\, Sydney Harbour. This tour charts the changing face of Cockatoo Island. \nAs you visit key landmarks from bygone eras\, our guide will reveal how they fit into the island’s historical narrative. They will also share anecdotes about a colourful cast of real-life characters\, including convicts\, wayward youths\, and dock workers. \nDATE: Thursday 23 February 2023  \nTIME: 10.45am – 12.00pm \n10.45am – for an 11.00am start.  Tour will last approx. 1 hour. I will make a reservation at one of them when I have an idea of how many people will be joining us on this outing. \nVENUE: Cockatoo Island\, Sydney Harbour \nCOST: $16.00 – does not include transport to and from Cockatoo Island.
