DESCRIPTION:The Tropic of Capricorn is the most southern circle of latitude where the sun can be directly overhead. Its northern equivalent is the Tropic of Cancer\, and together they form the borders of the tropical world. The two tropics are about latitude 23\, which is why Latitude 23 is the name of the tropical glasshouses at the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney. \nOn the Behind-the-Scenes Glasshouse Tour at the Botanical Gardens in Sydney\, you will discover the wonders of their tropical plant collection and rare plants not normally seen by the public. This tour is a must for orchid fans\, aroid freaks\, and all those who appreciate the joy of growing plants indoors. \nThis tour begins at the The Calyx\, the horticultural display centre where the cafe is open from 8am and toilets are available. This is a walking tour in a behind the scenes workplace where our horticultural staff are working hard to maintain these gems of our plant collection. Enclosed footwear is preferred\, participants need to follow the directions of their guide and during the tour we will be entering hot\, humid tropical environments in relatively confined spaces within the glasshouses. \nThe tour finishes at the Fernery in the upper gardens near the Woolloomooloo gate opposite the Art Gallery of NSW on Mrs Macquarie’s Road. \nDo join us for this\, ‘behind the scenes’\, outing. \nDATE: Thursday 11 September \nTIME: 11.00 am – 12.45 pm. DESCRIPTION:The SWIC Craft Group (which is actually a ‘needlecraft’ group) meets on the first Friday of the month from March to December. At the beginning of the year  the group has a voluntary ‘show and tell’ of work by those who wish to do so. \nMeetings are held in the homes of those members who are able to host. The format is ‘Open House’ from 12noon to 4.00pm and members are welcome to come for an hour\, or two\, or the whole afternoon. Afternoon tea is provided and members put $4 in the kitty to help cover the hostess’s expenses. \nThe group’s craft interests include knitting\, crochet\, embroidery\, cross stitch\, quilting\, patchwork and tapestry.
