SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - A Guided Tour of the (Harbour Bridge) Pylon Museum

Throughout the museum you will discover several exhibits about the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge\, the brave workers\, and interesting artefacts from the collection of Chief Engineer JJC Bradfield. \nThe displays throughout the museum examine why it took so long to realise a harbour bridge\, and consider the engineering challenges that a steel arch presented. \nSuspended from the ceiling you will find a model representing the day the arches joined (19 August 1930). The model illustrates the centre pin that was used to fasten the arches together. \nExplore the glamorous early years of the Sydney Harbour Bridge\, the evolution of the South East Pylon and relive the magic of the opening celebrations. \nPlease note that there are 200 steps to visit the whole museum\, but we will be able to do this at a leisurely rate. \nLimit of 30 people MAX \nDATE: Thursday 29 September 2022 \nVENUE: Pylon Museum\, Sydney Harbour Bridge – South East Pylon \nTIME: 11:00am – 12:00pm: Tour of the Pylon Museum and Lookout \nMEETING TIME & PLACE: 10:30am: Meet in Dawes Point Park\, then leisurely stroll along Cumberland Street to the lift or stairs\, that will take us to the pedestrian footpath on the bridge. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - 'Looking for Alibrandi'
DESCRIPTION:This month we are going to enjoy a Saturday matinee at Belvoir\, enabling our members who have weekday commitments to attend. \nBy Vidya Rajan\, based on the book by Melina Marchetta. Directed by Stephen Nicolazzo. \nThe beloved novel of migration\, growing up\, and Sydney – now a play! \nThree generations of women. The Italian-Australian experience. A tale of Sydney. A much-loved modern classic novel\, a ground-breaking film\, and now at Belvoir\, a simply great night out. \nIt’s the last year of school\, and 17-year- old Josephine Alibrandi can’t wait for her future to begin. If only she can get past the world of her Nonna\, holding on to the values of the old country; and the world of her Mum\, full of care and secrets. It’s time to take her place in the real world\, beyond her family\, beyond being an Alibrandi. \nBut this is the year Josie gets to know her father. This is the year she falls in love. And this is the year she uncovers the truth – and finds the Alibrandi she has been searching for. \nWe’re really excited to see how this classic of first and second generation Italian migration plays now. It has a bit of everything – teen romance\, coming-of-age\, tragi-comedy in a very Australian vein. Also\, it’s wonderful to have Stephen Nicolazzo directing for the Belvoir stage – he’ll bring a very Alibrandi flair – Eamon \nDATE: Saturday 8 October 2022 \nTIME: 2.00pm \nVENUE: Upstairs Theatre\, Belvoir Street Theatre\, Gadigal Country\, 25 Belvoir Street\, Surry Hills\, NSW 2010 \nTICKETS: $75 (Seniors) \nJudith and Cherry have purchased tickets F27 and F28 \nTo buy your tickets visit www.belvoir.com.au or ring the box office on 9699 3444 \nPRE-THEATRE SNACKS/DRINKS (Optional): Join us at the downstairs Theatre Bar for snacks and chat before the performance at 1.00pm. \nRSVP TO: Judith Nguyen at nguyenjm@bigpond.net.au \nRSVP BY: 1 October 2022 \n*************************************************************************** \nTHEATRE GROUP – Looking Ahead in 2022 \nTo enable you to plan your diary for 2022\, below are the dates and selected plays for Theatre Group for the remainder of 2022. SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - A Guided Walking Tour of Chippendale
DESCRIPTION:This walking tour in October will explore the inner-city suburb of Chippendale where Sydney is undergoing the most dramatic of changes. It is also the place where sharp oppositions are playing out between city and state\, memory and newness\, money and politics\, inspiration and pragmatism; opening up conversations big and small. \nOur route will be structured around several recent architectural projects. \nTour Details \nHistorically the centre of Sydney’s rag trade and home to one of the country’s largest breweries\, the transformation of Chippendale over the last decade has been nothing short of spectacular. This has architectural and urban dimensions of course\, but there have been concurrent cultural shifts in the world of art\, design\, landscape and gastronomy as well. How did this come about and what are the forces driving this change? Who are the key protagonists and what are the new ideas shaping this inspiring area? \nJoin us on this gritty architectural tour of Chippendale. Our route will be structured around a number of architectural\, art and urban interventions including projects by Pritzker-prize winning architects Norman Foster and Jean Nouvel. You will also discover transformative work by local heroes Durbach Block Jaggers\, William Smart\, John Wardle Architects\, Tonkin Zulaikha Greer\, Oculus and Aspect Studios. We will also sniff out one of Australia’s finest social housing schemes\, independent art galleries\, converted warehouses\, inspired laneway developments\, street art and discuss audacious plans to transform Central Station as we explore the suburbs underbelly. \nWe will end the tour at Central Park. Those who would like to\, can stay for lunch there. We will go to Din Tai Fung for their dumplings. This is not included in the cost. \nWhat Else \nPlease arrive at the meeting point 10-15 minutes prior to tour departure. \nDepending on numbers we will hand out a wireless audio system. Whatever happens with regard to weather – we will walk! Bring a sun hat\, umbrella\, camera\, sketch book and so on. \nSydney Architecture Walks (SAW) is a COVID-safe business and will abide by current NSW government procedures on the day of the tour. \nThe Guide \nThe tour will be led by architect Eoghan Lewis\, founder of Eoghan Lewis Architects (www.eoghanlewis.com.au) and the Sydney Architecture Walks (SAW).\nEoghan has been studying and sharing the work of Utzon with professional groups and the general public for the last 21 years through SAW. \nDATE: 27 October 2022 \nCOST: 2-hour tour – $35/pp \nMEETING POINT: 9.50am at White Rabbit Gallery (outside)\, 30 Balfour St\, Chippendale\, for a 10.00am start. \nRSVP TO: Caren Trafford at swic.activitymonthly@gmail.com with your name and mobile phone number. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - 'The Caretaker'
DESCRIPTION:This month we will have to pleasure of seeing Harold Pinter’s ‘The Caretaker’. Many of us will have studied this play at secondary school – or even taught it! \nIt’s a literary masterpiece that delves into the turbulent relationships between a homeless man and two polar opposite brothers. In this extraordinarily mischievous comedy\, Pinter cranks up the tension\, piles on the laughs and teases out the emotional foibles of three lonely men. \nAston asks down-and-out Davies to be a live-in caretaker. Davies leaps at the chance to change his fortunes\, but the trouble is he doesn’t know what a caretaker should do\, especially in a room filled with junk. When Aston’s manipulative brother Mike shows up\, the power struggle begins. Why does Aston collect all this stuff? Will Davies ever get a pair of decent shoes? And who will fix the drip in the ceiling? \nDirector Iain Sinclair (‘A View from the Bridge’) teams up once more with Darren Gilshenan (‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’) for this explosive\, compelling theatrical event. \nDATE: Wednesday\, 2 November 2022 \nTIME: 7.30pm – 2 hours 20 minutes (including interval) \nVENUE: The Ensemble Theatre\, 78 McDougall Street\, Kirribilli NSW 2061 \nTICKETS: Standard Adult $80\, Seniors Concession $77 \nJudith and Cherry have purchased tickets E21 and E22 \nTo buy your tickets visit https://boxoffice.ensemble.com.au/ or call (02) 8918 3460 \nPRE-THEATRE DINNER (Optional): Join us at Bayly’s Bistro (in the theatre) at 6.00pm \nRSVP TO: Judith Nguyen at nguyenjm@bigpond.net.au if you wish to join is for dinner as we will need to book a table \nRSVP BY: Monday 24 October 2022 \n
