DESCRIPTION:‘Shaken to the Core’ brings together Australian Artist\, Sidney Nolan’s\, confronting works responding to the Holocaust. This exhibition is of a body of works created by Nolan in 1961 following the Eichmann Trial and a visit to the Auschwitz camp. The works were buried away until they were exhibited for the first time in August 2021 at the Sidney Nolan Trust in Heredfordshire\, England. \nPlease join us in the Auditorium at the Sydney Jewish Museum for a curatorial introduction by our SWIC Member and Museum Guide\, Carole Hopper. SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - A Guided Walking Tour of Chippendale
DESCRIPTION:This walking tour in October will explore the inner-city suburb of Chippendale where Sydney is undergoing the most dramatic of changes. It is also the place where sharp oppositions are playing out between city and state\, memory and newness\, money and politics\, inspiration and pragmatism; opening up conversations big and small. \nOur route will be structured around several recent architectural projects. \nTour Details \nHistorically the centre of Sydney’s rag trade and home to one of the country’s largest breweries\, the transformation of Chippendale over the last decade has been nothing short of spectacular. This has architectural and urban dimensions of course\, but there have been concurrent cultural shifts in the world of art\, design\, landscape and gastronomy as well. How did this come about and what are the forces driving this change? Who are the key protagonists and what are the new ideas shaping this inspiring area? \nJoin us on this gritty architectural tour of Chippendale. Our route will be structured around a number of architectural\, art and urban interventions including projects by Pritzker-prize winning architects Norman Foster and Jean Nouvel. You will also discover transformative work by local heroes Durbach Block Jaggers\, William Smart\, John Wardle Architects\, Tonkin Zulaikha Greer\, Oculus and Aspect Studios. We will also sniff out one of Australia’s finest social housing schemes\, independent art galleries\, converted warehouses\, inspired laneway developments\, street art and discuss audacious plans to transform Central Station as we explore the suburbs underbelly. \nWe will end the tour at Central Park. Those who would like to\, can stay for lunch there. We will go to Din Tai Fung for their dumplings. DESCRIPTION:This month we will have to pleasure of seeing Harold Pinter’s ‘The Caretaker’. Many of us will have studied this play at secondary school – or even taught it! \nIt’s a literary masterpiece that delves into the turbulent relationships between a homeless man and two polar opposite brothers. In this extraordinarily mischievous comedy\, Pinter cranks up the tension\, piles on the laughs and teases out the emotional foibles of three lonely men. \nAston asks down-and-out Davies to be a live-in caretaker. Davies leaps at the chance to change his fortunes\, but the trouble is he doesn’t know what a caretaker should do\, especially in a room filled with junk. In 1964 James Fairfax AC bought the property and started to turn it from an agricultural property into a gentleman’s residence. James Fairfax always believed that Retford Park should be preserved for the enjoyment and benefit of future generations\, particularly those of the local district. On 19th April 2016 and in fulfilment of his ambition\, Mr Fairfax gifted his historic Retford Park home to the National Trust of Australia (NSW). \nAs our coach ventures up the driveway\, this grand Victorian Italianate homestead will appear from a towering arboretum of a magnificent collection of evergreen and deciduous trees.
