SUMMARY:Art & Culture - COLLIDER - 'Step inside the world’s greatest experiment’
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Come on a journey inside the largest scientific experiment ever constructed. Buried deep under the border between Switzerland and France\, CERN’s Large Hadron Collider is the work of 10\,000 men and women from across the globe\, united in their quest to uncover the fundamental building blocks of our universe. \nThis immersive exhibition from Science Museum\, London blends theatre\, video and sound art with real artefacts from CERN\, recreating a visit to the famous particle physics laboratory. We will go behind the scenes to witness the uncovering of the Higgs boson\, explore the 27-km collider and its cathedral-sized detector caverns\, and discover how studying the subatomic world can point the way to a fuller understanding of our universe. We will hear how Australian researchers and students are involved in this experiment that is at the frontier of scientific innovation. \nSee history being made. Meet engineers who build the impossible. Walk the tunnels of CERN. Stand in the heart of a collision. Witness a moment of discovery. \nJoin Art & Culture for a private guided tour and ‘Step inside the world’s greatest experiment’. \nDATE: Tuesday\, 20 September 2016 \nTIME: 10.15am for 10.30am private guided tour \nVENUE: Powerhouse Museum\, 500 Harris Street\, Ultimo 2007 \nCOST: $18 payable on the day \nRSVP TO: Lynne Kendal at bkendal@bigpond.com or 0423 137 565 \nRSVP BY: 13 September 2016 \nTRANSPORT: \nFrom Central Railway station walk west along George Street\, past the University of Technology\, turn right into Harris Street\, walk three blocks and the Powerhouse is on the right (approx. 12 mins). \nAlternatively\, follow the ‘Goods Line’ to the back entrance of the Powerhouse Museum. \n [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]If you are new to Sydney and haven’t been to the Hazelhurst Gallery in Gymea\, or just love Aboriginal art\, then this exhibition is a MUST. \nThis is the first major survey exhibition from the seven art centres of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunyjatjara (APY) Lands\, located in remote South Australia. It features 50 works by 50 artists\, including paintings by the five Ken sisters\, the winners of this year’s Wynne prize. \nBelinda Hanrahan\, Director of the Hazelhurst Regional Art Gallery and Arts Centre said “This is the most significant and most ambitious project for a regional gallery to do. It’s a huge undertaking and we know it will bring people from not just Sydney but from regional areas of New South Wales and beyond as it is such a rare opportunity to see this spectacular work from seven major Indigenous art centres in remote central Australia. The works will be in our exhibition space as well as installations in other parts of the gallery and our expansive gardens.” \nPaintings from the APY Lands region are celebrated for the artists’ strong use of colour and dynamic movement and for their specific way of transforming their stories. The highlights of the exhibition will be two 3 x 5 metre collaborative paintings featuring artists from each of the seven art centres – the first time that artists from across the APY Lands have worked together on a single painting. \nPlease join us for a private guided tour of this amazing exhibition – A MUST for lovers of Indigenous Art! \nDATE: Tuesday 18 October 2016 \nTIME: 10.50am for 11.00am private guided tour. SUMMARY:Movie Group
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Movie Group’s choice of films for Tuesday 22 November 2016 are: \n10.15am – Hacksaw Ridge \n10.00am – I\, Daniel Blake \n10.30am – Nocturnal Animals \nWe can meet in the foyer or at the tables outside for a coffee before the films to decide which film you wish to see. \nAfterwards we usually go for a light lunch or drink to the ECQ Bar Hacienda with the lovely view of the harbour in the Pullman Quay hotel (3nd floor\,  entrance from the quay). \nPlease buy your own ticket. \nPlease let me know if you can come and if you are able to stay for lunch.  \nHope to see you on Tuesday. \nAnn Wilson at annvonwil@gmail.com \nHACKSAW RIDGE \nWWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss\, who served during the Battle of Okinawa\, refuses to kill people and becomes the first Conscientious Objector in American history to win the Congressional Medal of Honor. \n‘Rotten Tomatoes’ gives it 85% – “It’s a blunt-force\, but highly effective treatise on the horrors of war as well as those who rise above the brutality to maintain as much humanity as one can on a battlefield”. \nI\, DANIEL BLAKE \nA middle aged carpenter who requires state welfare after injuring himself\, is joined by a single mother in a similar scenario. \n‘Rotten Tomatoes’ gives it a whopping 91% – “A climactic emotional explosion momentarily turns Daniel into something of a working-class hero\, although Loach could take up that mantle himself.” \nNOCTURNAL ANIMALS \nA woman named Susan receives a book manuscript from her ex-husband — a man she left 20 years earlier — asking for her opinion of his writing. As she reads\, she is drawn into the fictional life of Tony Hastings\, a math professor whose family vacation turns violent. \n‘Rotten Tomatoes’ gives it 75% – “Performances across the board are completely attuned to the unusual structure of the screenplay\, and convey both a despair and hope that only intensifies as the ending comes into view.” \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Challenging (Twilight) Walk - Spit Bridge to Georges Heights - NOW FULL
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]To wind up our Challenging Walks for 2016 we will take a twilight walk on Tuesday 6 December from Spit Bridge to Georges Heights. \nWe will begin our walk late afternoon from the Spit Bridge. Following the shoreline as much as possible\, we will walk along Chinaman’s\, Edwards and Balmoral Beaches. At Georges Heights we will move inland to take the local streets to a chosen restaurant in Mosman for our end of year (CW) meal before heading down Prince Albert St to view the Christmas lights. \nPlease note that although this walk is shorter than previously advertised (approx. 2 hour brisk walk) it is quite strenuous (there are a number of stairs and the first part of the walk involves a steep incline up Parriwi Rd). \nIf you are interested in this walk please contact either Sue Gunter at susan.gunter@btinternet.com or Jenny Goode at goodejenny@msn.com \nIt would be appreciated if you could let us know asap if you intend participating as December is a difficult month to book dinner for a large number of people.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
