SUMMARY:Out 'n About - Rose Bay Naval History Walk
DESCRIPTION:We will take a 2 hour walk around Rose Bay and the environs on an Australian Naval History Walk\, led by a volunteer from the Naval History Society.\nThe Rose Bay area has a significant link to Australia’s naval history from 1912-1927. \nThe recruit training ship HMAS Tingira was moored in Rose Bay from 1912-1927. In early June 1942 Rose Bay & some surrounding suburbs were shelled by a Japanese I -class submarine which in the previous week was part of the Japanese Naval force that launched midget subs to attack Sydney Harbour. \nKey sites visited and described include: \nThe history of HMAS Tingira including the ship’s previous two lives & commentary on life aboard for sailors including photos. At the Rose Bay war memorial where we will provide an overview of the Japanese midget sub attack in Sydney Harbour on 31 May 1942. At one of the properties damaged by an unexploded shell in 26 Manion Rd\, there will be a commentary on the shelling of the area on the 8 June 1942 as well as commentary on a prominent local Indigenous man\, Bungaree who is buried in Rose Bay. The tour will end near Rose Bay shopping centre where we can stop for lunch/coffee. A ferryman\, smuggler and raconteur\, Billy’s rakish charm earned him the nickname ‘The Old Commodore’. His son opened the original establishment back in 1854. Come check it out! \nSip ‘n’ Sup – Drinks & Dinner is a monthly drop-in gathering for all members. SUMMARY:Challenge Walk - The Spit to Manly
DESCRIPTION:This iconic\, well-marked walk starts at the Spit Bridge. The ~10 km route hugs the coastline\, providing bush\, beach and beautiful views. Elevation gain is approximately 250 meters.  It is a well-formed track with short steep hill sections and some shade.  Elevation gain is approximately 250 meters. \nIt is best to wear hiking shoes rather than sneakers. This will help with grip and provide a level of protection for your feet.   There are a few spots with steep narrow stairs but nothing too challenging.   Some of you may benefit from using walking poles\, so if you have them it might be useful to bring them along.   If you would like poles and do not have them\, please let us know as someone may be able to lend you a pair. \nThe walk finishes at Manly Wharf where we’ll stop for lunch.   There are multiple options to buy lunch or you may bring a picnic lunch.    Bring a hat\, raincoat\, sunscreen and water.  Water is available along the route but please bring at least 1 Litre with you and preferable 1.5 litres. \nYou should not have any injuries and be able to walk consistently at a moderate pace if you would like to join us on this walk. \nDATE: April 7 2026 \nTIME: 9.30am – 1.30pm approximate which includes a lunch in Manly at the end \nVENUE: Meet outside the Ormeggio at The Spit restaurant \n \nCOST: Public transport expenses.   Lunch if you do not bring one with you. \nRSVP TO: Email: SWICchallengewalk@gmail.com \nRSVP BY: Thursday April 2 2026. \nLEADERS:  Rani Haet (0452 588 153) and Thana Sivaganam (0432 553 338).   On the day of the hike\, please let us know if you are unable to make it. \nTRANSPORT:  You can catch the B line bus from Wynyard to the Spit West Reserve\, Spit Road (e.g.\, 172X\, 173X). This should take about 30 mins. You can also catch the 144 bus from Chatswood or Manly.   You can return to the city via ferry from Manly if you like. \n  \n
