SUMMARY:Art & Culture - Demolished Sydney: Georgian Town to Global City
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Join Art & Culture for TWO exhibitions in February. The first is a private guided tour of the History of Sydney\, followed by a self-guided tour of Demolished Sydney\, an exhibition exploring the buildings that once shaped the city’s skyline\, from the convict-built Commissariat Stores to the city’s last island of industry\, the Kent Brewery. The exhibition examines the histories of 13 sites and asks\, ‘What are the forces that have shaped our changing city and how do we value and preserve the heritage of the city we inherit?’ \nLike its counterparts across the world\, Sydney has been in a constant state of building\, unbuilding and rebuilding as it has grown into the metropolis of today. The mix of Georgian\, Victorian\, Art Deco and modernist buildings that have formed the character of Sydney\, also tells the story of its changing fortunes\, attitudes and needs. ‘Demolished Sydney’ reveals this process of urban evolution through key buildings that have been demolished and replaced. Through fragments salvaged from theatres\, hotels and office blocks\, alongside stunning photography\, artworks and film\, ‘Demolished Sydney’ brings back to life the heritage of a Sydney that is gone but not forgotten. \nDATE: Tuesday 21 February 2017 \nTIME: 10.00am – 12.15pm \nVENUE: Museum of Sydney\, Cnr Phillip & Bridge Streets\, Sydney NSW 2000 \nCOST: $12 \nPAYMENT OPTIONS: Pay on the day \nRSVP TO: Lynne Kendal at bkendal@bigpond.com 0423 137 565 \nRSVP BY: 14 February 2017 \nTRANSPORT: The Museum of Sydney is located one block back from Circular Quay\, which is serviced by trains\, buses and ferries.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Movie Group
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Ready for a movie?? It may be all we have to do on these rainy days!! \nFor those of you new to the group\, Jill and I select the morning movies that are available for the 4th Tuesday of each month. The cinema advertises them about a week beforehand\, so expect an email from us at that time. We meet prior to the movie times in the courtyard or the lobby of the Dendy Theatre\, Opera Quay. You select the movie you are interested in and buy your ticket – usually there is more than one person interested in each movie. After the movie we walk to the Hacienda Bar in the Pullman Quay Grand for lunch or a coffee. The movies vary in start and end times so we don’t all wait for each other at the theatre. When your movie ends\, just head over to the Hacienda and we’ll see you there. Hopefully you won’t be alone in your choice of movie! No need to RSVP – just join us. Jill and I will try to remember our name tags – look up our beautiful pictures on the SWIC website! \nLocation: \nDendy Opera Quay Theatre is amongst the shops on the walk to the Opera House at Circular Quay. \nHacienda Bar in the Pullman Quay Grand is on the same side of Circular Quay close to the turn after you pass Wharf 1. Enter the hotel and go to the second floor\, elevator or stairs. The bar is usually empty at noon on a Tuesday. I will try to book the area to the far left after entering. It’s the largest area to sit together. If not\, just select a spot anywhere. It’s a beautiful view overlooking the harbour. \nMARCH 28 MOVIES \nAlone in Berlin \n10:00am \nBerlin\, 1940. Working class couple Otto and Anna Quangel receive the news that their only son has been killed on the battlefield. They decide to resist the Nazi regime in their very own way\, risking everything to try and turn the tide on German support for the cause. Based on the international best-seller by Hans Fallada. \nLoving \n10:15am \nSet in 1958 Virginia\, Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga give understated yet powerful performances as a couple who simply want to live peacefully together\, yet sadly have to go all the way to the Supreme Court just to do so. \nBeauty and the Beast \n10:20am \nI think this might be my pick! Fond memories of watching the Disney movie with my daughters and the movie appears to live up to the hype. \nSee you at the movies! \nAnn Wilson & Jill Surgeon \n [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
