SUMMARY:Art & Culture - Private Tour of 'The Lady and the Unicorn' Tapestries
DESCRIPTION:Art & Culture commences 2018 with a rare opportunity for our members to experience the beauty\, scale and intricacy of ‘The Lady and the Unicorn’ Tapestry Series. \nOn loan from the Musée de Cluny\, this tapestry series is a masterpiece of Medieval French Art that has captivated viewers across the centuries. \nRevered as a national treasure in France\, and known as the 15th-century ‘Mona Lisa of the Middle Ages’ The Lady and the Unicorn tapestry cycle will be making its exclusive appearance in Australia at the Art Gallery of NSW through a generous and exceptional loan from the collection of the Musée de Cluny – Musée National du Moyen Âge in Paris. \nThe six large tapestries each depict a richly costumed lady flanked by that most mysterious animal\, the unicorn\, with jewel-like millefleur (‘thousand flowers’) backgrounds. The tapestries present a vivid meditation on earthly pleasures and courtly love. They can also be viewed as an allegory of the five senses – sight\, hearing\, taste\, touch and smell – plus a sixth ‘internal’ sense – heart\, desire or will – which was widely known at the time. \nA visit to The Lady and the Unicorn will allow a close encounter with one of the world’s greatest treasures. \nDATE: Tuesday 20 February 2018 \nVENUE: Art Gallery of NSW\, Art Gallery Road\, The Domain\, Sydney NSW 2000 \nTIME: Meet in the foyer of the Art Gallery no later than 9.15am for a 9.30am tour. \nCOST: $25 Payable on the Day \nRSVP TO: Kay Nicholas at kay.k.nicholas@gmail.com or 0438469044 \nRSVP BY: 9 February 2018 \nPlease note that registration for this tour by 9 February 2018 is essential as our numbers determine the number of guides that are required. Full payment is required if you cancel after the clos- by date unless your place can be filled by someone on our waitlist. \nTRANSPORT: The NSW Art Gallery is located the eastern side of Sydney’s CBD\, next to the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Domain\, just down the road from St Mary’s Cathedral. The Art Gallery is approximately a 5 minute walk from Macquarie Street\, across the Domain\, or from Hyde Park. BUS: Please note that the 441 bus from the Queen Victoria Building does NOT commence its service until 10.00am. \n

SUMMARY:Short Walk - The Rocks
DESCRIPTION:Walking around The Rocks we will spare a thought or two about the early European  Settlers who landed on the foreshores of Sydney Cove.  It was all so Topsy Turvy for them\, the sun went backwards\, North was South and South was North\, even the sky looked different. It nearly went bottoms up\, there was a shortage of food and no Gorden Ramsey or Jamie Oliver in sight and they didn’t think to ask the locals about local produce!  Luckily  they had that great and wise man Arthur Phillip who decreed that everybody from Top Ponce to Lower Bogan would get the same rations and so saved the day. Now we can celebrate those distant relatives that we dared not mention for so many years.  We will meet at Wynyard Station and walk through to Gloucester St\,  Cumberland St and then to the Argyle Cut\, past the Garrison Church and up to Observatory Hill. There are a few wide sandstone steps opposite the Garrison Church but it is possible to walk up the street to Observatory Hill. There are streets that slope slightly but there are benches around the area to rest. There we will continue on around the hill\, through the Rocks area\, then around under the Bridge and down George St. A tea break at The Tea Cosy Cafe is planned. \nDATE: Wednesday 21 March 2018 \nTIME: 10am-12am \nVENUE: The Tea Cosy Cafe \nCOST: Refreshments at own expense. \nRSVP TO: Maureen Trost-Black at trostblack@hotmail.com or 0406 362 388 \nRSVP BY: Sunday 18 March 2018 \nTRANSPORT: Trains and buses to Wynyard Station
