SUMMARY:WAITLIST - International Morning Tea - Croatia

Romana was a member of the International Women Club in Zagreb and came to Sydney as the wife of a diplomat\, with her husband being appointed as the Consul General of Croatia in November 2014. \nRomana is looking forward to sharing with us a little of her past life in Croatia\, while also sharing some of her favourite sweet and savoury specialties. \nCroatia is in Europe and is the latest country to join the European Union\, becoming an EU member in 2013. Croatia’s capital is Zagreb\, which has a population of 4.28 million\, most of whom are Roman Catholics. Croatian cuisine offers a unique blend of the best of many regions. Croatia has a long coastline on the Adriatic Sea and along the pristine Dalmatian coast the food is Mediterranean but further inland the food is full of rich Austro-Hungarian style dishes. \nDATE: Tuesday 13 March 2018 \nTIME: 10.30am – 12.30pm \nVENUE: Home of Jill Watson\, Townhouse 1\, 51-55 Upper Pitt St\, Kirribilli\, 2061 \nCOST: No cost \nRSVP TO: Watsongillian8@gmail.com or Eva.voordouw@icloud.com \nRSVP BY: Tuesday 6 March 2018 \nTRANSPORT: \nStreet parking – two-hour street parking in Upper Pitt and surrounding streets. \nPublic Transport – 5 minute walk from Milsons Point Train Station or take the ferry to Kirribilli Wharf or Milsons Point Wharf \n  \n

SUMMARY:Short Walk - The Rocks
DESCRIPTION:Walking around The Rocks we will spare a thought or two about the early European  Settlers who landed on the foreshores of Sydney Cove.  It was all so Topsy Turvy for them\, the sun went backwards\, North was South and South was North\, even the sky looked different. It nearly went bottoms up\, there was a shortage of food and no Gorden Ramsey or Jamie Oliver in sight and they didn’t think to ask the locals about local produce!  Luckily  they had that great and wise man Arthur Phillip who decreed that everybody from Top Ponce to Lower Bogan would get the same rations and so saved the day. Now we can celebrate those distant relatives that we dared not mention for so many years.  We will meet at Wynyard Station and walk through to Gloucester St\,  Cumberland St and then to the Argyle Cut\, past the Garrison Church and up to Observatory Hill. There are a few wide sandstone steps opposite the Garrison Church but it is possible to walk up the street to Observatory Hill. There are streets that slope slightly but there are benches around the area to rest. There we will continue on around the hill\, through the Rocks area\, then around under the Bridge and down George St. A tea break at The Tea Cosy Cafe is planned. \nDATE: Wednesday 21 March 2018 \nTIME: 10am-12am \nVENUE: The Tea Cosy Cafe \nCOST: Refreshments at own expense. \nRSVP TO: Maureen Trost-Black at trostblack@hotmail.com or 0406 362 388 \nRSVP BY: Sunday 18 March 2018 \nTRANSPORT: Trains and buses to Wynyard Station

SUMMARY:Short Walk - The Rocks
DESCRIPTION:Walking around The Rocks we will spare a thought or two for the early European  Settlers who landed on the foreshores of Sydney Cove.  It was all so Topsy Turvy for them: the sun went backwards\, North was South and South was North\, even the sky looked different. It nearly went bottoms up as there was a shortage of food and no Gorden Ramsey or Jamie Oliver in sight and they didn’t think to ask the locals about local produce!  Luckily  they had that great and wise man Arthur Phillip who decreed that everybody from Top Ponce to Lower Bogan would get the same rations and so saved the day. Now we can celebrate those distant relatives whom we dared not mention for so many years. \nWe will meet at Wynyard Station and walk through to Gloucester St\,  Cumberland St and then to the Argyle Cut\, past the Garrison Church and up to Observatory Hill. There are a few wide sandstone steps opposite the Garrison Church but it is possible to walk up the street to Observatory Hill. There are streets that slope slightly but there are benches around the area on which to rest. Then we will continue on around the hill\, through the Rocks area\, then around under the Bridge and down George St. A tea break at The Tea Cosy Cafe is planned. \nDATE: Wednesday 18 April 2018 \nTIME: 10.00am-12.00pm \nVENUE: The Tea Cosy Cafe \nCOST: Refreshments at own expense \nRSVP TO: Maureen Trost-Black at trostblack@hotmail.com or 0406 362 388 \nRSVP BY: Sunday 15 April 2018 \nTRANSPORT: Trains and buses to Wynyard Station

SUMMARY:Movie Group
DESCRIPTION:The Movie Group meets on the 4th Tuesday morning each month to see a film at the Dendy Quays Cinema (between Circular Quay and the Opera House). \nThere are usually three films for members to choose from. Details of the films and times will be posted on the SWIC Movie Group Calendar of Events on Thursday or Friday in the week before the showing\, when the program is available. Please buy your ticket when you arrive at the theatre. No need to RSVP\, just come along. \nSWIC members usually meet before the film in the foyer of the cinema. Afterwards we go for a coffee or light lunch to the upstairs section of the City Extra Cafe opposite the Circular Quay Ferry Terminals. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the movies. \nJill and Ann \nMOVIES FOR 24 APRIL 2018 \n10.00am – The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society\nA writer develops bonds with the residents of Guernsey when she writes a book about their experiences of the Nazi occupation on the island during World War II. \n10.00am – The Other Side of Hope\nA newcomer to Helsinki is befriended by a budding – if completely inexperienced – restaurateur in Aki Kaurismäki’s hilarious and compassionate new comedy. \n10.30am – Last Flag Flying\nThirty years after serving together in the Vietnam War\, Larry “Doc” Shepherd\, Sal Nealon and the Rev. Richard Mueller reunite for a different type of mission: to bury Doc’s son\, a young Marine killed in Iraq. Forgoing burial at Arlington National Cemetery\, Doc and his old buddies take the casket on a bittersweet trip up the coast to New Hampshire. Along the way\, the three men find themselves reminiscing and coming to terms with the shared memories of a war that continues to shape their lives.

SUMMARY:Challenging Walk – Sphinx to Gibberagong\, Cowan and Cockle Creek
DESCRIPTION:This circuit will be one of our most challenging walks (12 km) and will take between 4-4.5 hours to complete. A significant amount of our walk will follow Cowan (salt water) and Cockle Creek (fresh water). Hiking boots are a necessity for this walk. \nSue and I completed the walk in 4.5 hours on Tues 17/4/18. It is a really beautiful\, worthwhile\, albeit long walk. The challenging aspect of this particular walk is that the steps frequently are quite deep. Both Sue and I used TREKKING POLES\, which we found were very beneficial both to prevent sausage fingers and to lever/ steady ourselves. I strongly recommend investing in a pair. Hiking boots are a requirement as there can be quite a lot of foliage on the ground.  The walk is on a par with the Mount Kuring- gai  National Park walk we did 2017. The good news is that we do not have the massive ascent at the completion of the walk. \nDATE: Tuesday 1 May 2018 \nTIME: TBA \nRSVP TO: Jenny Goode goodejenny@msn.com or \nSue Gunter susan.gunter@btinternt.com \nRSVP BY: Friday 27 April 2017
