SUMMARY:Ladies' Night Out - Arthouse Lounge
DESCRIPTION:Everything about The Arthouse Hotel is big. With four bars and a restaurant\, this popular CBD watering hole caters for everything from a quick after-work drink to corporate functions\, weddings and Saturday nights that end when the sun rises. The cavernous building is heritage listed and features original 19th century architecture. Previously home to the School of Arts\, today The Art House also regularly hosts life drawing classes\, art exhibitions\, cabaret nights and photography workshops. \nThere are food and drink specials all week\, plus lunch and dinner menus and bar food\, if a little run of the mill. Think crispy-fried squid\, crumbed chicken wings or goat’s cheese arancini. You’ll find all the standard beers and spirits here\, plus a different wine list in each bar featuring mostly Australian drops – many available by the glass. \nFor something a little stiffer\, ask the bar staff to create one of their well-priced cocktails – perhaps the Yellow Submarine with gin\, butterscotch schnapps and lemon butter\, or a Suzie Q with rum\, elderflower and honeycomb \nDATE: Wednesday 24 July 2019 \nTIME: 6.00pm to 8.00pm \nVENUE: The Arthouse Lounge\, 1st floor\, 275 Pitt Street\, Sydney NSW 2000 \nCOST: Pay for your own drink and food at the Bar \nRSVP TO: Sangeeta Gupta on 0423 416 007 or at swicniteout@gmail.com \nRSVP BY: Friday 19 July 2019 \nTRANSPORT: A short walk from Wynyard station or Town Hall

SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - Visit to the Sydney Startup Hub
DESCRIPTION:What is a start-up? The term ‘start-up’ gets thrown around so often\, but does anyone really know what it means? All businesses start somewhere – so what actually makes a ‘start-up’ special and how is it different to a traditional business? \nIn less than 10 years Australia’s technology start-up sector has gone from very little activity to an explosion of people and investment\, and getting more prominent in the job creation for the future. \nWe are going to visit The Sydney Startup Hub\, a $35 million investment backed by the NSW Government for a start-up and innovation hub\, which occupies 17\,000sqm across 11 floors. It is the place where talent\, visiting experts and investors meet and collaborate. \nWe will learn about the start-up ‘ecosystem’ in Down Under as now one of the fastest-growing start-up sectors globally. We will also visit two important residents of the hub to learn about their businesses in technology. The Sydney Startup Hub is the first of its kind in Australia and is unmatched in the southern hemisphere in terms of its size and density\, with the aim being to generate up to 6\,500 new jobs across regional and metro NSW. \nDATE: Thursday 25 July 2019 \nTIME: 10.00am – 12noon (meet at 9.45am) \nVENUE: The Sydney Startup Hub\, 11-31 York Street\, Sydney NSW 2000 \nhttps://sydneystartuphub.com/about \nCOST: Free \nRSVP TO: Kesty Pringgoharjono at activity.swicsydney@gmail.com \nRSVP BY: 18 July 2019 \nTRANSPORT: 1 minute walk from Wynyard Station

SUMMARY:Theatre Group - William Golding’s "Lord of the Flies"
DESCRIPTION:This month’s Theatre Group takes on a more serious note – Maybe there is a beast. Maybe it’s just us. \nWhen a plane crash leaves a group of schoolboys marooned on a desert island\, it isn’t long before they descend into rivalries\, chaos and violence. \nArtistic Director Kip Williams’ staging makes us look at Lord of the Flies with new eyes. An exciting ensemble of adult actors\, including Australian screen star Mia Wasikowska (Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland) will bring Golding’s island of boys to life\, showing how quickly small cruelties can escalate. More than just pig’s blood will be spilled. \nWilliam Golding’s Lord of the Flies is a 20th century masterpiece\, as relevant today as it was on its publication in 1954. In it\, Golding created an enduring modern myth\, examining humanity’s terrifying capacity for self-destruction. \nDon’t miss this powerful and thrilling retelling of a classic. \nAdapted for the stage by Nigel Williams\nDirected by Kip Williams \nContent warning – Adult themes\, violence\, strong language\, theatrical blood\, haze\, strobe lighting and complete theatrical blackouts. \nDATE: Tuesday 6 August 2019 \nTIME: 6.30pm – 1hr 45 mins (no interval) \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: We have purchased our tickets for $99 each with senior concession. It offers casual Italian food until 10.00pm. We will book a table when we know the numbers. NOTE: Please RSVP if you are joining us\, and if you change your mind please let us know in plenty of time. Some restaurants charge for ‘no shows’. \nRSVP TO: Judith Nguyen at nguyenjm@bigpond.net.au by 30 July 2019 \n************************************************* \nTHEATRE GROUP – Looking Ahead \nTuesday 3 September – Avalanche: A Love Story by Julia Leigh (STC/Roslyn Packer Theatre) \nWednesday 9 October – The Real Thing by Tom Stoppard (STC/Drama Theatre\, Opera House) \nThursday 28 November – Packer & Sons by Tommy Murphy (Belvoir) \nWednesday 11 December – The Odd Couple by Neil Simon (Ensemble)

SUMMARY:International Morning Tea - ‘A Caravan Odyssey - Discovering Our Country’
DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker this month is Lynne Kendal\, a past SWIC President and member since 2007. Hear how Lynne and her husband Brian cast themselves adrift for 21 months doing ‘THE LAP’ around Australia in their luxury caravan with a focus on life outside of the major cities. \nWith no previous caravanning experience and equipped only with the desire to understand more about Australia as a country\, they had to quickly adapt from city apartment living to caravan life on the road. \nToday’s talk is how it all came together\, and more importantly the geographical wonders\, wildlife\, aboriginal art and other personal experiences during this full-time extended caravan odyssey. Places you will have heard of and many that you haven’t\, from the Pacific to Indian Oceans\, from the Tasmania wilderness to the wonders of Kakadu\, the Kimberley and the wide expanses of the Nullabor. \nJoin Lynne swimming with the whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef\, walk through the Painted Hills of South Australia\, be amazed by the stunning wildflowers of the west and the seafood along the way.\nLynne promises to limit the talk to 15 minutes which will probably be a bigger challenge than the trip itself. \nDATE: Tuesday 13 August 2019 \nTIME: 10.00am – 12.00pm (please note the new start time) \nVENUE: At the home of Catherine Marsh\, 64 Ellalong Road\, Cremorne\, NSW  2090 \nCOST: No cost \nRSVP TO: Jill Watson at watsongillian8@gmail.com \nRSVP BY: Tuesday 5 August 2019 \nTRANSPORT: \nStreet parking – untimed street parking is available. \nPublic Transport – 243 bus from Wynyard Stand A departs at 9.31am & arrives 16 minutes later. SUMMARY:Ladies' Night Out - Marble Bar
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Marble Bar is 123 years old? As far as impressive venues for a cocktail in this town go\, Marble Bar is the one to beat. Pillars made of multi-coloured marble hold up the arches that make this feel more like a gallery than a bar – an impression reinforced by the collection of 14 French realist-style paintings by Julian Ashton. But few galleries also feature two fully stocked cocktail bars prepped and ready to shake up tequila\, elderflower liqueur\, cloudy apple juice\, mint and agave syrup into a long\, tall\, refreshing beverage that has all the holiday vibes of a Margarita\, but without the salty smack. \nIn many ways drinking at Marble Bar feels like time travel – a Victorian-era bar designed to look like something out of the Renaissance and populated by 21st century travellers and inner city types. \nDATE: Wednesday 28 August 2019 \nTIME: 5.30pm to 8.00pm \nVENUE: The Marble Bar\, Hilton Hotel\, Level B1/488 George St\, Sydney NSW 2000 \nCOST: Pay for your own drinks and food at the Bar \nRSVP TO: Sangeeta Gupta on 0423 416 007 or at swicniteout@gmail.com \nRSVP BY: Friday 23rd August 2019 \nTRANSPORT:  Short walk from Town Hall \n
