SUMMARY:Ladies' Night Out - Marble Bar
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Marble Bar is 123 years old? As far as impressive venues for a cocktail in this town go\, Marble Bar is the one to beat. Pillars made of multi-coloured marble hold up the arches that make this feel more like a gallery than a bar – an impression reinforced by the collection of 14 French realist-style paintings by Julian Ashton. But few galleries also feature two fully stocked cocktail bars prepped and ready to shake up tequila\, elderflower liqueur\, cloudy apple juice\, mint and agave syrup into a long\, tall\, refreshing beverage that has all the holiday vibes of a Margarita\, but without the salty smack. \nIn many ways drinking at Marble Bar feels like time travel – a Victorian-era bar designed to look like something out of the Renaissance and populated by 21st century travellers and inner city types. \nDATE: Wednesday 28 August 2019 \nTIME: 5.30pm to 8.00pm \nVENUE: The Marble Bar\, Hilton Hotel\, Level B1/488 George St\, Sydney NSW 2000 \nCOST: Pay for your own drinks and food at the Bar \nRSVP TO: Sangeeta Gupta on 0423 416 007 or at swicniteout@gmail.com \nRSVP BY: Friday 23rd August 2019 \nTRANSPORT:  Short walk from Town Hall \n

SUMMARY:Challenging Walk - Collaroy to Manly
DESCRIPTION:This is a very beautiful 11km coastal walk that allows wonderful vistas of the northern beaches coastline. We will be doing a LOT of walking along long stretches of sand. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - "Avalanche: A Love Story"
DESCRIPTION:This month Theatre Group will be seeing Avalanche: A Love Story. Direct from London it stars acclaimed British actor Maxine Peake and is a compelling story of hope and longing. \nBy Julia Leigh \nDirected by Anne-Louise Sarks \nWhen a woman rekindles an early love in her late 30s her whole life changes. Deeply in love\, she and her new husband want to have a child together and they make an appointment at an IVF clinic. So begins this story\, inspired by the writer Julia Leigh’s own personal memoir. \nThis international co-production with the Barbican Theatre was praised as “a must-hear story for our times” (Go London) on its UK premiere. It lays bare the daily oscillation between hope and doubt in a drama we can all relate to – about the dreams we have for ourselves\, the hopes we have for our futures\, and the goals we have for our families. \nAcclaimed for her “capacity for emotional directness and a fierce\, uncensored honesty” (The Guardian)\, Maxine Peake is a prolific theatre\, television and film actor. Australian audiences will know her from her astounding range of work\, including Netflix’s Black Mirror\, cult favourite TV show Shameless\, and an extensive list of BBC dramas. Sydney-born director Anne-Louise Sarks has been making waves in Europe and this production brings her back to her hometown for her first work with STC. \nAvalanche: A Love Story is a Barbican Theatre and Fertility Fest production\, co-produced by Sydney Theatre Company and Audible. \nDATE: Tuesday 3 September 2019 \nTIME: 6.30pm – 1hr 45 mins (no interval) \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: We have purchased our A Reserve Senior Concession tickets for $93 each. Yasodhara tells the story of her own Sinhala family\, rich in love\, with everything they could ask for. As a child in idyllic Colombo\, Yasodhara’s and her siblings’ lives are shaped by social hierarchies\, their parents’ ambitions\, teenage love and\, subtly\, the differences between the Tamil and Sinhala people—but this peace is shattered by the tragedies of war. Yasodhara’s family escapes to Los Angeles. But Yasodhara’s life has already become intertwined with a young Tamil girl’s… \nSaraswathie is living in the active war zone of Sri Lanka\, and hopes to become a teacher. But her dreams for the future are abruptly stamped out when she is arrested by a group of Sinhala soldiers and pulled into the very heart of the conflict that she has tried so hard to avoid – a conflict that\, eventually\, will connect her and Yasodhara in unexpected ways. \nIn the tradition of Michael Ondatjee’s “Anil’s Ghost” and Arundhati Roy’s “The God of Small Things”\, “Island of a Thousand Mirrors” is an emotionally resonant saga of cultural heritage\, heartbreaking conflict and deep family bonds. Narrated in two unforgettably authentic voices and spanning the entirety of the decades-long civil war\, it offers an unparalleled portrait of a beautiful land during its most difficult moment by a spellbinding new literary talent who promises tremendous things to come.” \nSuspenseful\, hopeful\, and ultimately redemptive\, White Chrysanthemum tells a story of two sisters whose love for each other is strong enough to triumph over the grim evils of war. \nBooks for upcoming meetings: \n\n\n\nTitle\nAuthor\nGenre\nDate of meeting\n\n\nSanctuary\nJudy Nunn\nFiction\n4 Nov 2019\n\n\nThe Storied Life of AJ Fikry\nGabrielle Zevin \nContemporary Fiction\n2 Dec 2019\n\n\nAn Autobiography – Agatha Christie\nAgatha Christie\nAutobiography\n6 Jan 19\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Australia Women v Sri Lanka Women T20 International Cricket
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to attend a cricket match but don’t like big crowds or don’t understand the rules? Join me at the North Sydney Oval and I will explain the basics of the game to you and answer your questions as best as I can. I regularly attend cricket matches and was heavily involved with my children’s cricket clubs in New Zealand.  Come and support the highly successful Australian Women’s team as they take on the Sri Lankans in a T20 match. The T20 format is the shortest and most exciting of the three formats of the game. Each side gets 20 overs in which to score as many runs as possible. The games normally run for three hours so it is the perfect bite size introduction to one of Australia’s national games. \nThis event is in the school holidays. Please feel free to bring partners\, friends and children. As the tickets are for general admission you can sit anywhere you like in the ground. We will have a meeting place for those who want to sit in a group.
