SUMMARY:Theatre Group - "Avalanche: A Love Story"
DESCRIPTION:This month Theatre Group will be seeing Avalanche: A Love Story. Direct from London it stars acclaimed British actor Maxine Peake and is a compelling story of hope and longing. \nBy Julia Leigh \nDirected by Anne-Louise Sarks \nWhen a woman rekindles an early love in her late 30s her whole life changes. Deeply in love\, she and her new husband want to have a child together and they make an appointment at an IVF clinic. So begins this story\, inspired by the writer Julia Leigh’s own personal memoir. \nThis international co-production with the Barbican Theatre was praised as “a must-hear story for our times” (Go London) on its UK premiere. It lays bare the daily oscillation between hope and doubt in a drama we can all relate to – about the dreams we have for ourselves\, the hopes we have for our futures\, and the goals we have for our families. \nAcclaimed for her “capacity for emotional directness and a fierce\, uncensored honesty” (The Guardian)\, Maxine Peake is a prolific theatre\, television and film actor. Australian audiences will know her from her astounding range of work\, including Netflix’s Black Mirror\, cult favourite TV show Shameless\, and an extensive list of BBC dramas. Sydney-born director Anne-Louise Sarks has been making waves in Europe and this production brings her back to her hometown for her first work with STC. \nAvalanche: A Love Story is a Barbican Theatre and Fertility Fest production\, co-produced by Sydney Theatre Company and Audible. \nDATE: Tuesday 3 September 2019 \nTIME: 6.30pm – 1hr 45 mins (no interval) \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: We have purchased our A Reserve Senior Concession tickets for $93 each. To buy your tickets visit www.sydneytheatrecompany.com \n(NOTE: Transaction fees may apply – $7.50 online; $8 telephone; $0 Box Office counter) \nPOST-THEATRE SUPPER & CHAT (Optional): You are welcome to join us after the performance for supper and a chat at Ventuno\, 7/21 Hickson Road (on the wharf side opposite the theatre). It offers casual Italian food until 10.00pm. We will book a table when we know the numbers. \nRSVP TO: Judith Nguyen at nguyenjm@bigpond.net.au by Tuesday 27 August 2019 \n************************************************* \nTHEATRE GROUP – Looking Ahead \nWednesday 9 October – The Real Thing by Tom Stoppard (STC/Opera Drama Theatre) \nThursday 28 November – Packer & Sons by Tommy Murphy (Belvoir) \nWednesday 11 December – The Odd Couple by Neil Simon (Ensemble)

Yasodhara tells the story of her own Sinhala family\, rich in love\, with everything they could ask for. As a child in idyllic Colombo\, Yasodhara’s and her siblings’ lives are shaped by social hierarchies\, their parents’ ambitions\, teenage love and\, subtly\, the differences between the Tamil and Sinhala people—but this peace is shattered by the tragedies of war. Yasodhara’s family escapes to Los Angeles. But Yasodhara’s life has already become intertwined with a young Tamil girl’s… \nSaraswathie is living in the active war zone of Sri Lanka\, and hopes to become a teacher. But her dreams for the future are abruptly stamped out when she is arrested by a group of Sinhala soldiers and pulled into the very heart of the conflict that she has tried so hard to avoid – a conflict that\, eventually\, will connect her and Yasodhara in unexpected ways. \nIn the tradition of Michael Ondatjee’s “Anil’s Ghost” and Arundhati Roy’s “The God of Small Things”\, “Island of a Thousand Mirrors” is an emotionally resonant saga of cultural heritage\, heartbreaking conflict and deep family bonds. Narrated in two unforgettably authentic voices and spanning the entirety of the decades-long civil war\, it offers an unparalleled portrait of a beautiful land during its most difficult moment by a spellbinding new literary talent who promises tremendous things to come.” \nSuspenseful\, hopeful\, and ultimately redemptive\, White Chrysanthemum tells a story of two sisters whose love for each other is strong enough to triumph over the grim evils of war. \nBooks for upcoming meetings: \n\n\n\nTitle\nAuthor\nGenre\nDate of meeting\n\n\nSanctuary\nJudy Nunn\nFiction\n4 Nov 2019\n\n\nThe Storied Life of AJ Fikry\nGabrielle Zevin \nContemporary Fiction\n2 Dec 2019\n\n\nAn Autobiography – Agatha Christie\nAgatha Christie\nAutobiography\n6 Jan 19\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Australia Women v Sri Lanka Women T20 International Cricket
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to attend a cricket match but don’t like big crowds or don’t understand the rules? Join me at the North Sydney Oval and I will explain the basics of the game to you and answer your questions as best as I can. I regularly attend cricket matches and was heavily involved with my children’s cricket clubs in New Zealand.  Come and support the highly successful Australian Women’s team as they take on the Sri Lankans in a T20 match. The T20 format is the shortest and most exciting of the three formats of the game. Each side gets 20 overs in which to score as many runs as possible. The games normally run for three hours so it is the perfect bite size introduction to one of Australia’s national games. \nThis event is in the school holidays. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - "The Real Thing" by Tom Stoppard
DESCRIPTION:This month we will be seeing Sydney Theatre Company’s production of The Real Thing. \nSimon Phillips returns to direct an irresistible cast in this hugely entertaining and deeply affecting modern classic about the search for love. \nThe Real Thing is playwright Tom Stoppard at his dazzling best. One of his most heartfelt plays\, it’s a portrait of a writer of intellectual prowess struggling to articulate that most elusive of emotions – love. \nHenry is married to Charlotte\, while Annie is married to Max. But it’s Henry and Annie who have fallen passionately in love. Could this\, at last\, be the real thing? They’ll soon find out. \nThrough the demise of two marriages\, the bloom of new relationships\, and the pain of infidelity\, Stoppard’s characters debate and dissect what love is\, what it gives and what it takes. Expertly constructed\, erudite and funny\, The Real Thing is a modern classic. \nSimon Phillips returns to direct an irresistible cast including Geraldine Hakewill (Chimerica) and Johnny Carr in this hugely entertaining and deeply affecting play. \nProduction Patron – The Petre Foundation \nContent warning – Strong language\, adult themes\, sexual references \nDATE: Wednesday 9 October 2019 \nTIME: 8.00pm (approx. duration 2hrs 20 mins\, including interval) \nVENUE: Drama Theatre\, Sydney Opera House \nTICKETS: Adult $103; Seniors $93; Concession $82; Under 30 $75\nWe have purchased our A Reserve Senior Concession tickets for $93 each. SUMMARY:Art & Culture - Private Tour of the Rose Seidler House (WAIT LIST)
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join Art & Culture for an exclusive SWIC-only tour of the Rose Seidler House on Tuesday 15 October 2019. Our hosts will be Sydney Living Museums. \nThe Rose Seidler House\, now a museum managed by Sydney Living Museums\, is one of the finest examples of mid-20th Century modern domestic architecture in Australia.  Built by Harry Seidler for his parents in 1948-1950\, the radical design of this influential house integrated architecture\, art and technology in a bold and optimistic vision for a new way of living. The house in its garden setting is an authentic representation of Harry’s early vision for Australian architecture. The furniture and interiors also form one of Australia’s most important mid-century collections of domestic design. Today it is still surrounded by bushland with panoramic views of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park\, and its furniture and fittings form one of the most complete and intact post-World War II design collections in public ownership. The house\, contents and grounds have all been carefully restored to their original ’50s glory. \nPlease note that because of the fragility of the furnishings and the historic nature of the property our numbers are strictly limited. We have therefore arranged TWO TOURS\, BACK-TO-BACK. \nTour 1: 10.30am  Tour 2: 11.30am \nPlease: \n\nRSVP early\nRSVP before payment to ascertain availability\nAfter advice from the organiser of availability on the tour kindly pay in order to confirm your place\n\nNote: SWIC will prepay this event so there will be no refunds after the close-by date of 28 September 2019. \nSydney Living Museums advise the following: \n\nMobility – The house is not accessible by wheelchair and while people with limited mobility can access the site\, there is a set of stairs (about 15) that leads to the main floor of the house. There is no opportunity to sit down within the house as much of the furniture is original and fragile. The grounds and carpark are quite rough terrain.\nBags\, food and drink are not permitted in the house\nMobile phones must be turned off during the program\nWet weather – tours will go ahead in all weather conditions so please come prepared\nWear your best socks!
