SUMMARY:Movie Group
DESCRIPTION:We start the New Year with more wonderful choices: 1917 and Little Women are both nominated for Best Movie Oscars. \n1917 is NOT “just another war movie”. It is magnificent film making\, physically and very emotionally immersive – for both men and women. A struggle for survival.  Set over 100 years ago\, the prospect of another war is always real. \nLittle Women…who didn’t want to be Jo? Sure to be a popular choice with our group. \nAnd for a world that has become so cynical\, desperately needing kindness and compassion\, Tom Hanks as Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is a balm for the soul. \nVENUE: Dendy Quays Cinema (between Circular Quay and the Opera House) \nCOST: Please buy your ticket when you arrive at the theatre \nRSVP: Iolanda Capodanno and Grace Mroz are the Movie Group Convenors but there is no need to RSVP – just come along. Meet before the film in the foyer of the cinema. \nAPRES FILM (Optional): We meet at Buckley’s\, East Circular Quay\, which is a 5 minute stroll from the cinema. It is a pub-style cafe where you order at the counter. Please note there is no tea or coffee available. As finish times vary\, we have a flexible booking from 12 noon + under ‘SWIC Movie Group’. It’s always fun to discuss and compare the various movies we have seen that morning. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe movies this month:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n 09.45am: 1917 MA15+ / Strong war themes (1hr 50m) FINISH approx 12noon\n 10.15am: A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood PG /Mild themes\, coarse language(1hr 50m) FINISH approx 12.20pm\n 10.45am: Little Women G (2hr 15m) FINISH approx 1.15pm\n\n09.50am: 1. 1917 – MA15+/Strong War themes (1hr 50m) \n \nAt the height of the First World War\, two young British soldiers\, Schofield and Blake are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time\, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers—Blake’s own brother among them. \nCast: George MacKay\, Dean-Charles Chapman\, Mark Strong\, Andrew Scott \nDirector: Sam Mendes \nRelease date: 9 January 2020 \n10.15am: 2. A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD -PG Mild themes\, violence and coarse language (1hr 50m) \n \nTom Hanks portrays American children’s television icon Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood\, a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism\, based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. After a jaded magazine writer (Emmy winner Matthew Rhys) is assigned a profile of Fred Rogers\, he overcomes his skepticism\, learning about empathy\, kindness\, and decency from America’s most beloved neighbour. \nCast: Tom Hanks\, Matthew Rhys\, Susan Kelechi Watson\, Chris Cooper \nDirector: Marielle Heller \nRelease date: 23 January 2020 \n10.45am: 3. LITTLE WOMEN – G / Very mild themes (2hr 15m) \n \nWriter-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott\, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego\, Jo March\, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig’s take\, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her own terms – is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo\, Meg\, Amy\, and Beth March\, the film stars Saoirse Ronan\, Emma Watson\, Florence Pugh\, Eliza Scanlen\, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbour Laurie\, Laura Dern as Marmee\, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March. \nCast: Saoirse Ronan\, Emma Watson\, Florence Pugh\, Eliza Scanlen\, Laura Dern\, Timothée Chalamet\, Tracy Letts\, Bob Odenkirk\, James Norton\, Louis Garrel with Chris Cooper and Meryl Streep. \nDirector: Greta Gerwig \nRelease date: 1 January 2020 \n

SUMMARY:Explore Sydney Walk - Dangar Island
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: This walk is one week later than usual due to the AGM. \nWhere in Sydney are there roads but no cars and the main form of transport is a wheelbarrow?  Don’t know? Well please come and find out! Join us for this excursion – to Dangar Island. \nFebruary can be a little on the warm side\, and who wants to be walking long distances in summer? Instead we will take an excursion to Dangar Island in the Hawkesbury region on the northern boundaries of Sydney. There’s a shaded short walk of approximately 4km\, that will enable us to see the island and experience some island life. \nWe’ll start the day with a relaxing train journey leaving from the historic and recently restored country side of Central Station\, and journey to Brooklyn/ Hawkesbury Station. This journey will take us through picturesque countryside and views of the Hawkesbury River. At Brooklyn we take a short ride to Dangar Island on the cutest of ferries. \nThe walk is short and mostly flat; however there is one moderately steep section\, which is an optional part of the walk\, and comes after the completion of the main walk loop . Those not wanting to do this optional part will have the opportunity for coffee at the wharf cafe. \nDATE: Wednesday 19 February 2020 \nTIME: 10.00am -12.00pm. Ferry and short walk of approximately 4km\, followed by lunch \nVENUE: Exact meeting place and time will be emailed to those who RSVP \nCOST: Lunch at own expense at the King Tide Café (KT Café) Brooklyn\, which serves a variety of cafe style meals including vegetarian options. Cash only is accepted on the Dangar Island Ferry: $8.10 each way (NOTE: Opal Cards cannot be used for this service). \nWHAT YOU NEED TO DO: \nFor planning purposes\, please let Mary Williams know if you are staying for lunch via the Gmail address below. \nRSVP TO: swic.exploresydneywalk@gmail.com \nRSVP BY:  Saturday 15 February 2020 \nTRANSPORT: Train is by far the most comfortable option\, since Brooklyn/ Hawksbury station is just a few minutes from the ferry terminal for Dangar Island. If you journey by train there’s time to get a coffee when you arrive at Brooklyn and before taking the ferry. Please be aware that the station platform is accessed via a passenger bridge with 60 steps. \nThere is some parking at Brooklyn for those who wish to drive. You will need to arrive at Brooklyn by 10.00am\, as the ferries are not frequent.  More travel details will be sent to those who RSVP.

SUMMARY:Explore Sydney Walk - The Wetlands of Bicentennial Park
DESCRIPTION:Where can you find a mangrove forest\, yes…a whole forest in metropolitan Sydney? \nDon’t know? Please come explore the Wetlands of Bicentennial Park\, Sydney Olympic Park.  This is an important ecological area of 60 hectares of wetlands where over 200 species of birds\, both native Australian and migratory species\, shelter and feed.  There are hides and viewing areas: if you have some small binoculars that can pop in your rucksack\, please bring them. \nTime to get out your walking boots\, as March usually heralds good walking weather\, with anticipated temperatures warm rather than hot. This is a comprehensive walk\, with the chance for some bird spotting\, a walk through a mangrove forest\, and viewing symbolic monuments in gentle parklands. \nDuring the walk we’ll take the impressive raised board walk (Government funded- thank you)\, taking us right through the centre of a grey mangrove forest that provides an important nursery for aquatic life. \nWe will also see the hulls of retired ships and barges from an old ship wrecking yard. This yard was part of the industrial landscape; the area was once heavily polluted\, and is now heralded as a restoration success story. \nThe walk is approximately 8 km\, with a good even surface and mostly flat. There’s a couple of small inclines that can be by-passed if needed. The walk is mostly in shade; the parkland areas are more open.  DATE: Wednesday 11 March 2020 \nTIME: 10.00am – 12.20noon approximately\, followed by lunch \nVENUE: Exact meeting place and time will be emailed to those who RSVP \nCOST: Lunch at own expense at the Waterview Café within the park. The cafe serves a variety of meals including vegetarian. \nWHAT YOU NEED TO DO: \nFOR PLANNING PURPOSES PLEASE LET MARY KNOW IF YOU ARE STAYING FOR LUNCH\, VIA THE GMAIL ADDRESS BELOW \nRSVP TO: swic.exploresydneywalk@gmail.com \nRSVP BY: Saturday 7 March 2020 \nTRANSPORT:  Concord West station is a 20 minute train journey from Central station. Once at Concord West station the start of the walk is within a few minutes. For those wishing to travel by car\, there is 4 hour parking at specific car parks\, one of which is close to the start of the walk. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Theatre Group - 'A Chorus Line' (CANCELLED)
DESCRIPTION:Darlinghurst Theatre Company in Sydney opens its 2020 season with a new\, re-imagined production of A Chorus Line. Directed and choreographed by Amy Campbell\, the iconic dance musical was ground-breaking when it premiered in 1975. It will be the first time that a professional Australian production of the show features entirely new choreography. \nSet on the bare stage of a Broadway theatre\, A Chorus Line centres on 17 dancers who are desperately auditioning for eight chorus roles in a musical. The show unfolds through a series of vignettes\, giving us a glimpse into the personalities of the people auditioning\, revealing the life experiences that propelled them to become dancers\, along with their hopes\, fears\, insecurities and frustrations.
