SUMMARY:Theatre Group - 'Orange Thrower' - Griffin/SBW Stables Theatre

SUMMARY:Travel Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Please note the change of day to a Wednesday. We received several comments last year about people missing the Friday meeting as they were away for the weekend\, so we thought that we would give Wednesday a go. \nNow that state borders are open again and international travel is once again permitted\, we would like the focus of this meeting to be on tips and advice around travel in the current climate. \nDISCUSSION TOPICS:  Be prepared to: \n\nShare your recent experience of overseas or interstate travel since such travel has been permitted. What are your tips for hassle-free travel\, where would you recommend for pre-flight testing\, how does the process work at the airport\, what do you wish you had known about before travelling?\nAsk a travel question to the group. May be about a specific destination\, packing tips\, travel research sources\, etc. Please include this question in your RSVP so that we can circulate it to the group before the meeting to enable members to prepare.\n\nLooking ahead\, we are eager to move the Travel Conversations Group towards our original stated concept of participants serving as advisors to help with each other’s travel questions and goals.  We will discuss with the group ways that we can facilitate this kind of exchange. \nDATE: Wednesday 2 March 2022 \nTIME: 10am – 12.00pm \nVENUE: TBA when we decide whether to meet in person or via zoom \nRSVP TO: Mimi Flaherty Willis and Catherine Marsh at travel.swicsydney@gmail.com \nRSVP BY:  Friday 25 February. Please include a copy (screenshot) of your vaccination certificate if you are planning to attend and you have not already submitted it to SWIC so that we have this should we be able to meet in person.  Only fully vaccinated members may participate in SWIC activities.

SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - An Outing to North Head Quarantine Station\, Manly
DESCRIPTION:Located within a 30-hectare site on the North Head of Manly\, you will find a unique destination\, that is Q Station. An enduring part of Sydney’s history\, for 150 years the Quarantine Station was for many the beginning of a new life in Australia after making the arduous and lengthy journey from their homelands. Ships suspected of harbouring people infected with contagious diseases such as Spanish Influenza\, Smallpox or Bubonic Plague were quarantined here so that these deadly diseases would not reach the general population in Sydney. Ultimately a success story for the growing Sydney population\, it did however leave an indelible mark on those who were quarantined; tales of love and loss play out alongside themes of cultural and social change\, medical history and progress. \nThis will be a guided tour of 90 minutes. The ‘Quarantine Wander’ tour takes place predominantly in the flat area of the wharf precinct\, before climbing a short incline to the old hospital precinct. This tour visits the autoclaves\, inhalation chamber\, shower block and hospital ward\, and addresses the migrant arrival process and infectious disease treatment at the Quarantine Station in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Included will be a visit to the other buildings in this area such as the laundry and the morgue\, as well as the museum (previously the old luggage store). \nDATE: Thursday 24 March 2022 \nTIME: 11.30pm – 2.00pm (tour 12.30pm) \nLimit of 30 people MAX \nVENUE: Quarantine Station\, 1 North Head Scenic Drive\, Manly NSW Phone: 02 9466 1500 \nCOST: $24. \nI propose that we arrive earlier at 11.30am and meet at the Café on site which will be open on the day of our visit and which has a selection of sandwiches\, hot food such as sausage rolls and pies\, pastries\, muffins\, tea and coffee. We can also explore alone until the guide is ready. We have been asked to be there at least 15 minutes prior to the tour. \nGETTING THERE: There is a shuttle bus which can pick us up from the carpark if we convene there at 11.30am. I will be notifying the station that we would like the shuttle bus to take us from the car-park down to the site at 11.30am and then return us to the car-park after the tour. Alternatively\, it is a 15 minute walk. \nRSVP TO: swic.activitymonthly@gmail.com with your name and mobile phone number. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - 'White Pearl' - Wharf 1 Theatre (STC)
DESCRIPTION:By Anchuli Felicia King\nDirected by Priscilla Jackman \nThere’s no such thing as bad publicity… \nFrom the brilliant mind of Anchuli Felicia King\, White Pearl was a runaway smash on its 2019 Sydney premiere with co-producer Riverside’s National Theatre of Parramatta. After a hit season at Queensland Theatre in 2021\, this knockout production will return in 2022\, this time at The Wharf. \nBehind the sleek and unblemished facade of CleardayTM cosmetics — a market leader in Asia’s booming beauty industry — the scars of deep-seated prejudice are waiting to re-emerge. A team of young and ambitious women from across Asia is working to generate buzz for their new skin-whitening cream ‘White Pearl’. The problem? An ad in development has leaked early and it’s making headlines for all the wrong reasons. As views skyrocket and the ad is shared around the world\, the team races against the clock to get the situation under control\, to save their jobs and to lay the blame squarely elsewhere. \nWith razor-sharp dialogue\, nail-biting tension\, and caustic wit\, this rollercoaster of a production takes a nuanced swipe at cancel culture and toxic corporations\, exploring intra-Asian politics\, 21st century racism and the dark side of going viral. \nApprox. duration 1 hr 25 mins (no interval)\nContent Strong language\, adult themes\, sexual references and themes of racial prejudice. White Pearl dissects aspects of race and culture and contains content that may be confronting for some audience members. \nDATE: Wednesday 30 March 2022 \nTIME: 7.30pm \nVENUE: Wharf 1 Theatre\, Wharf 4/5\, 15 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay\, Sydney\, NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: Adult A Reserve $70\, B Reserve $66\, Seniors cardholder $70 \nPurchase your tickets at https://www.sydneytheatre.com.au/whats-on or by phone at the Box office on (02) 9250 1777 \nCherry and I have booked our tickets for Seats K5 and K6. \nPRE-THEATRE: (Optional): Join Judith and Cherry for pre-theatre Dinner at ‘The Theatre Bar at the End of the Wharf’ at 6.00pm \nRSVP TO: Judith Nguyen at nguyenjm@bigpond.net.au\, indicating whether you would like to join us for pre-theatre dinner\, as booking a table is required \nRSVP BY: Monday 21 March 2022 \n**************************************** \nTHEATRE GROUP – Looking Ahead in 2022 \nTo enable you to plan your diary\, below are the dates and selected plays for Theatre Group for the remainder of 2022. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - 'Wayside Bride' at Belvoir
DESCRIPTION:This month we are in for a special late Sunday afternoon treat at Belvoir\, enabling our members who have weekday commitments to attend. \nIn a street out the back of Kings Cross is a very special place – the Wayside Chapel. It’s a haven for the poor\, the excluded\, the misfits. It’s a place of faith and a place of love. And it’s a place where people could declare their love – sometimes in the face of fierce resistance from family\, from society\, from the church hierarchy. It’s a play of quiet heroism and heartache. \nWritten by Alana Valentine and co-directed by Hannah Goodwin and Eamon Flack\, ‘Wayside Bride’ is based around stories that Belvoir asked from people who had married at the Wayside Chapel. \nCommissioned and developed by Belvoir with the assistance of Wayside Chapel\, the Noffs Foundation\, the City of Sydney and Griffin Theatre Company. \nDATE: Sunday 10 April 2022 (Preview session) \nTIME: 6.30pm \nVENUE: Upstairs Theatre\, Belvoir Street Theatre\, Gadigal Country\, 25 Belvoir Street\, Surry Hills\, NSW 2010 \nTICKETS: Preview $52\nJudith and Cherry have purchased tickets G33 and G34\nTo buy your tickets visit www.belvoir.com.au or ring the Box Office on 9699 3444 \nPRE-THEATRE SNACKS/DRINKS (Optional): Join us at the downstairs Theatre Bar for snacks and chat before the performance at 5.30pm \nRSVP TO: Judith Nguyen at nguyenjm@bigpond.net.au \nRSVP BY: 5 April 2022 \n***************************************************************************\nTHEATRE GROUP – Looking Ahead in 2022\nTo enable you to plan your diary for 2022\, below are the dates and selected plays for Theatre Group for the remainder of 2022.
