SUMMARY:Evening Book Group - "Shell" at Café 1812
DESCRIPTION:This month we will be reviewing “Shell” by Kristina Olsson\, set in 1965 against the backdrop of the construction of the Sydney Opera house.  All are welcome. \nDATE: Monday 4 March 2019 \nTIME: 5.45pm – 8.30pm (book discussion to commence around 6.30pm) \nVENUE: Cafe 1812\, a cafe and wine bar inside Berkelouw Books\, 19 Oxford Street\, Paddington\, NSW 2021. See ‘About the venue’ below. \nCOST: Pay for your own drinks/ food \nRSVP TO: Caroline Frangopoulos at cmfrangopoulos@gmail.com or mobile 0420 395996 \nRSVP BY: 1 March 2019 \nTRANSPORT:\nBy Train: 19 Oxford Street\, Paddington is a 10-15 minute walk from Museum Station up Oxford Street\, located on the city side of the Victoria Barracks. Beware as Oxford St renumbers in each suburb\, so walk past 19 Oxford St\, Darlinghurst! \nBy Bus: From the city you can take the following bus routes which all stop opposite the store: 333\, 380\, 440\, or the Metrobus M40. \nBy Car: Parking\nSt Vincent’s Hospital Public Car Park\, Victoria St. Flat rate AUD 11 after 4.00pm \nAbout the book: \n“A big\, bold and hauntingly beautiful story that captures a defining moment in Australia’s history. \nEverywhere he looked he saw what Utzon saw. The drama of harbour and horizon\, and at night\, the star-clotted sky. It held the shape of the possible\, of a promise made and waiting to be kept … \nIn 1965 as Danish architect Jørn Utzon’s striking vision for the Sydney Opera House transforms the skyline and unleashes a storm of controversy\, the shadow of the Vietnam War and a deadly lottery threaten to tear the country apart. \nJournalist Pearl Keogh\, exiled to the women’s pages after being photographed at an anti-war protest\, is desperate to find her two missing brothers and save them from the draft. Axel Lindquist\, a visionary young glass artist from Sweden\, is obsessed with creating a unique work that will do justice to Utzon’s towering masterpiece.” \nAbout the venue: \n \nAside from abundant inspiration for our book list\, Café 1812 has a lovely wine bar and cafe on the first floor which is where we will meet.  There is reasonably priced parking nearby as well as plenty of buses that stop just outside. \nMore at:  http://berkelouw.com.au/stores/paddington \nBooks for upcoming meetings: \nMonday 1 April 2019 – “Transcription” by Kate Atkinson (Spy novel) \nWe are taking nominations and will vote next week for our April – June reading list.  If you cannot attend and would like to nominate a book / vote\, please send me an email.
