DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Art Gallery of New South Wales\, North Building for a private tour. \nFor almost 100 years artists at Yirrkala have shared art as a means of cultural diplomacy – as a respectful assertion of power in its diverse forms\, from influence to authority\, sovereignty\, strength\, energy and pride. \nThis exhibition showcases the extraordinary artists of Yirrkala in north-east Arnhem Land\, Northern Territory\, and the power of their art from the 1940s to the present. Our guides will introduce us to the significant moments in Yirrkala’s history when artists have consciously altered their practice\, developed new styles or embraced new mediums. In covering multiple generations\, the exhibition highlights familial connections and cultural continuation. DESCRIPTION:Our first stop is a visit to Manly Art Gallery & Museum. This is the first metropolitan based regional gallery in NSW\, established in 1930. It is a small gallery with an interesting collection of works. The new exhibition will be from 6 June until 27 July. It foregrounds the work of artists who enfold time and space\, positioning us in relationship to an “environment” that is shaped by cultural\, spiritual\, political social and intellectual forces. \nFrom here we will walk to Harbord Diggers along Manly\, Queenscliff and Freshwater beaches and boardwalk hoping to see some whales. It’s an easy walk (7 km round trip) with marvellous views and a few steps between Queenscliff and Freshwater. \nLunch at the Harbord Diggers\, for those who would like\, then walk back to Manly wharf. DESCRIPTION:The SWIC Craft Group (which is actually a ‘needlecraft’ group) meets on the first Friday of the month from March to December. At the beginning of the year  the group has a voluntary ‘show and tell’ of work by those who wish to do so. \nMeetings are held in the homes of those members who are able to host. The format is ‘Open House’ from 12noon to 4.00pm and members are welcome to come for an hour\, or two\, or the whole afternoon. Afternoon tea is provided and members put $4 in the kitty to help cover the hostess’s expenses. \nThe group’s craft interests include knitting\, crochet\, embroidery\, cross stitch\, quilting\, patchwork and tapestry.
