SUMMARY:Art & Culture - Private Tour - Has the Day Invaded the Night or Has the Night Invaded the Day?
DESCRIPTION:Note – this event is being held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month instead of the usual 3rd Tuesday of the month \nExperience the strange beauty and emotional power of Louise Bourgeois’s art\, in the largest exhibition of her work ever seen in Australia. \nBorn in Paris in 1911 and living and working in New York until her death in 2010\, Bourgeois is renowned for her fearless exploration of human relationships across a relentlessly inventive seven-decade career. \nLouise Bourgeois: Has the Day Invaded the Night or Has the Night Invaded the Day? reveals the extraordinary reach and intensity of her art\, from her haunting Personage sculptures of the 1940s to her tough yet tender textile works of the 1990s and 2000s. SUMMARY:Challenging Walk – The Seventh (and FINAL!) Leg of Bondi to Manly Walk – North Head: Manly Wharf to Manly Beach
DESCRIPTION:At the end of 2018\, six city councils along with other agencies\, decided to create a coastal and harbour-side walking track between two famous beaches in Sydney\, Bondi Beach and Manly Beach. The result of this collaboration is the epic 80km Bondi to Manly Walk. The details can be found on www.bonditomanly.com or the B2M app. We will walk the Bondi to Manly Walk in seven stages together\, walking one stage at a time on the first Tuesday of the month from June to December. \nIn December\, we will do the seventh (and final!)  leg of Bondi to Manly Walk from Manly Wharf to Manly Beach via North Head Sanctuary. The walk is approximately 10km with an elevation gain of 240m. The walk will take around 3 hours to complete. \nFrom Manly Wharf\, we will walk up past many small coves and beaches\, to the historic Quarantine Station at North Head\, where North Head Sanctuary\, The Barracks\, Memorial Walk and Gun Emplacement Tunnels are located. \nFollowing on from North Head\, we will reach the quaint Shelly Beach\, renowned for its small shells which make up a large portion of the sand. From here\, it’s a short walk to the finish\, passing Fairy Bower Seawater Pool and Manly Surf Life Saving Club\, and eventually ending at Manly Beach. (Excerpts from www.bonditomanly.com) \nMore details will be sent to members who are participating closer to the event date. \nDATE:  Tuesday 5 December 2023 \nTIME: At 9.00 am at Manly Wharf meeting point (just outside Manly wharf) \nLUNCH: A restaurant at Manly at your own expense \nRSVP TO: Corinne Drouin at cdrouin.au@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Theatre Group – ‘The Seagull’ at Roslyn Packer Theatre (STC)
DESCRIPTION:By Anton Chekhov\nAdapted by Andrew Upton\nDirected by Imara Savage \n  \nWhen life imitates art \nSigrid Thornton returns to the Sydney Theatre Company as the larger-than-life diva Arkadina\, in a new adaptation from Australia’s greatest interpreter of Chekhov and former STC Artistic Director\, Andrew Upton. \nIn a splendid country house beside a beautiful lake\, love triangles\, intrigue and thwarted egos are running amok. The ageing starlet Irina Arkadina has arrived for a romantic getaway with her much younger lover\, the novelist Trigorin. Arkadina’s son\, the struggling playwright Konstantin\, is besotted with a beautiful young ingenue from the next house over\, Nina. When a flirtation blossoms between Nina and Trigorin\, jealousy and ambition throw the whole party into various states of crisis. \nDirector Imara Savage last wowed STC audiences with her revelatory production Saint Joan (2018). In The Seagull\, Savage and Upton will bring Chekhov’s wry and offbeat sense of humour to the fore and present a beautiful investigation of the power of art and the complicated personalities that make it happen. \nThe first of Chekhov’s great masterpieces\, The Seagull is a rich\, funny and moving play that is unmissable for anyone who loves theatre. In the hands of these extraordinary artists\, we are in for something very special. \nApprox. duration 2 hrs 30 mins (including interval)\nContent Suicide \nDATE: Saturday 2 December 2023 \nTIME: 1.30pm (MATINEE) \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: Tickets are A Reserve $109\, B Reserve $104 \nJudith and Cherry have purchased seats D11 and D12 (A Reserve) \nTo buy your tickets visit www.sydneytheatrecompany.com \nPRE-THEATRE DRINKS/SNACKS & BOARDS (Optional): There will also be the option to join us for pre-theatre drinks/snacks & boards at The Theatre Bar at the End of the Wharf at 12 noon. SUMMARY:Monthly Activity -All About Utzon: The Opera House and Surrounds
DESCRIPTION:Both an in-depth and textured portrait of enigmatic Danish architect Jørn Utzon\, as well as the story of perhaps the 20th Centuries most ambitious architectural project\, this tour will be draw you in to the visionary world of the architect of Sydney Opera House. \nDiscussing the sources of Utzon’s deepest inspiration\, his working methods and influences\, we will chart the development of Utzon’s ideas and their materialisation in the platform\, concrete shells and ceramic skin of Sydney Opera House. You will discover the influence of towering 20th Century figures like Le Corbusier\, Alvar Aalto\, Eero Saarinen\, Mies van der Rohe\, Frank Lloyd Wright\, Antonio Gaudi and even Picasso on Utzon’s thinking and you will discover the ways in which his work was at once contemporary whilst drawing its inspiration from the work of the ancients. \nUtzon considered the six years he spent developing the interiors of the House the most productive of his career. None of this work was realised. Using discarded drawings\, models and prototypes\, Utzon’s unrealised design of the acoustic interiors\, glass walls and furniture – much of it ready for construction before he was forced to leave the project – will be discussed. \n \nYour Guide:\nEoghan Lewis is the principal architect of Eoghan Lewis Architects (http://www.eoghanlewis.com.au/) and founder of the Sydney Architecture Walks (http://www.sydneyarchitecture.org/). \nSAW reviews: https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Attraction_Review-g255060-d1891075-Reviews-Sydney_Architecture_Walks-Sydney_New_South_Wales.html \nDATE: Wednesday 29 November 2023 \nTIME: 10:15am for 10:30am start. SUMMARY:Theatre Group – 8 November 2023 – ‘The Dictionary of Lost Words’ - STC
DESCRIPTION:Adapted by Verity Laughton from the novel by Pip Williams\nDirected by Jessica Arthur \nDiscover the secret power of words \nPip Williams’ award-winning New York Times bestseller and book club favourite\, The Dictionary of Lost Words\, is brought to vivid life in a new adaptation for the stage by Verity Laughton and directed by one of Australia’s best directors\, Jessica Arthur. \nIt’s 1886 and the very first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary is being compiled. Four-year-old Esme Nicoll has a front row seat. Well\, she’s hiding under the sorting table\, anyway. As her father and his male colleagues decide which words stay and which go\, Esme collects the discarded (often gendered) scraps to compile her own far more radical\, far more magical dictionary. \nA sweeping historical tale in the spirit of The Harp in the South\, The Dictionary of Lost Words follows Esme from her childhood in the 1880s\, into adulthood at the height of the women’s suffrage movement and the beginning of the First World War. \nThis novel has captured the imagination of hundreds of thousands of readers around the globe\, and was recommended by book club trendsetters like Reese Witherspoon. In 2023\, Verity Laughton’s adaptation unfurls this beautiful and transportive reflection on the love between a daughter and her father\, at a time when the women’s rights movement was first gaining traction\, into a delectable and warm night of theatre. \nApprox. duration 2 hrs 20 mins (including interval)\nContent Strong language \nDATE: Wednesday 8 November 2023 \nTIME: 7.30pm \nVENUE: Drama Theatre\, Sydney Opera House \nTICKETS: Single Tickets – Adult A Reserve $114\, Seniors Concession $109 \nJudith and Cherry have purchased tickets J6 and J7 \n To buy your tickets visit https://www.sydneytheatre.com.au/whats-on \nPRE-THEATRE: (Optional): Join Judith and Cherry for pre-theatre Drinks and Chat at the Sydney Opera Bar\, on the Lower Concourse Level at 6.00pm. \nRSVP TO: Judith Nguyen at nguyenjm@bigpond.net.au \nRSVP BY: 1 November 2023 \nTHEATRE GROUP – Looking Ahead in 2023 \nOur remaining play for the year is shown below. \n\n\n\nDate & Day\nPlay\nType\nTheatre\n   Time\n Seats (Convenors)\n\n\n2 December (Saturday)\nThe Seagull (MATINEE)\nNew interpretation of Chekhov’s masterpiece\nRoslyn Packer Theatre (STC)\n1.30pm\nD11\, D12 (A Reserve)
