SUMMARY:Challenging Walk – The Seventh (and FINAL!) Leg of Bondi to Manly Walk – North Head: Manly Wharf to Manly Beach
DESCRIPTION:At the end of 2018\, six city councils along with other agencies\, decided to create a coastal and harbour-side walking track between two famous beaches in Sydney\, Bondi Beach and Manly Beach. The result of this collaboration is the epic 80km Bondi to Manly Walk. The details can be found on www.bonditomanly.com or the B2M app. We will walk the Bondi to Manly Walk in seven stages together\, walking one stage at a time on the first Tuesday of the month from June to December. \nIn December\, we will do the seventh (and final!)  leg of Bondi to Manly Walk from Manly Wharf to Manly Beach via North Head Sanctuary. The walk is approximately 10km with an elevation gain of 240m. The walk will take around 3 hours to complete. \nFrom Manly Wharf\, we will walk up past many small coves and beaches\, to the historic Quarantine Station at North Head\, where North Head Sanctuary\, The Barracks\, Memorial Walk and Gun Emplacement Tunnels are located. \nFollowing on from North Head\, we will reach the quaint Shelly Beach\, renowned for its small shells which make up a large portion of the sand. From here\, it’s a short walk to the finish\, passing Fairy Bower Seawater Pool and Manly Surf Life Saving Club\, and eventually ending at Manly Beach. DESCRIPTION:Both an in-depth and textured portrait of enigmatic Danish architect Jørn Utzon\, as well as the story of perhaps the 20th Centuries most ambitious architectural project\, this tour will be draw you in to the visionary world of the architect of Sydney Opera House. \nDiscussing the sources of Utzon’s deepest inspiration\, his working methods and influences\, we will chart the development of Utzon’s ideas and their materialisation in the platform\, concrete shells and ceramic skin of Sydney Opera House. You will discover the influence of towering 20th Century figures like Le Corbusier\, Alvar Aalto\, Eero Saarinen\, Mies van der Rohe\, Frank Lloyd Wright\, Antonio Gaudi and even Picasso on Utzon’s thinking and you will discover the ways in which his work was at once contemporary whilst drawing its inspiration from the work of the ancients. \nUtzon considered the six years he spent developing the interiors of the House the most productive of his career. SUMMARY:Challenging Walk – The Sixth Leg of Bondi to Manly Walk – Spit Bridge - Manly Wharf
DESCRIPTION:At the end of 2018\, six city councils along with other agencies\, decided to create a coastal and harbour-side walking track between two famous beaches in Sydney\, Bondi Beach and Manly Beach. The result of this collaboration is the epic 80km Bondi to Manly Walk. The details can be found on www.bonditomanly.com or the B2M app. We will walk the Bondi to Manly Walk in seven stages together\, walking one stage at a time on the first Tuesday of the month from June to December. \nIn November\, we will do the sixth leg of Bondi to Manly Walk from Spit Bridge to Manly Wharf. The walk is approximately 10km with an elevation gain of 188m. The walk will take around 3 hours to complete. \nStarting at the Spit Bridge\, we’ll continue on to Fisher Bay Trail which leads to Clontarf Beach and Grotto Point Lighthouse. Along the way\, be on the lookout for Aboriginal Rock Engravings and Shell Middens. Heading back towards Manly\, the trail continues along to Dobroyd Head\, passing Indigenous Australian Rock Engravings and Heritage Sites. Along this part of the walk there are many viewpoints\, such as Arabanoo Lookout\, Reef Bay and Delwood Beach\, all of which have glistening views of Middle Harbour and Sydney’s Headlands. Continuing to Manly Wharf\, we’ll pass Federation Point\, Manly Walkway of Olympians and Manly Cove. DESCRIPTION:Tour summary for Defence of Sydney Tour: \nEstablished in 1936\, North Fort is a remnant military complex at North Head Sanctuary in Manly. \nStrategically placed at the northern entrance to Sydney Harbour\, the fort was part of a defence system that spanned 300km of coastline during World War II. \nThe Defence of Sydney Tour is an opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the men and women who served at North Fort. Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide\, you will marvel at heritage gun emplacements\, once capable of firing 26.4km\, and descend into the 200-metre-long military tunnel complex. Finally\, our guide will demystify an underground bunker once shrouded in secrecy: The Plotting Room. As you explore this facility\, concealed within bushland\, you’ll hear how our specialist volunteers faithfully restored it. \nTour Conditions   \n\nThe 90-minute North Fort tour includes paved bush tracks\, stairs\, and approx. 20 minutes in underground tunnels\, and in another 20 minutes in the underground Plotting Room. Please note\, access to and from the tunnels and plotting room are accessed by stairs (approximately the equivalent of two flights of stairs).\nThere is no access for mobility devices in the underground tunnels.\nThe tour will proceed regardless of weather. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk along the Gladesville foreshore from Huntley’s Point to Morrison Bay Park. \nWe will meet at 10am at Huntley Point Road (Marked Gladesville Reserve on the map) and follow the foreshore through Gladesville Reserve\, Gladesville Hospital\, Banjo Paterson Park\, Glades Bay Park to Morrison Bay Park.  From Morrison Bay Park we will head back to Victoria Road to our lunch spot at Bayview Pub. \n \n                                                                                              \nDATE: Wednesday\, 11 October 2023. \nTIME: 10 am – 12 noon \nMEETING POINT: Meet at Gladesville Reserve on Huntleys Point Road ( Refer to the red marker on the map) \nCOST: Lunch at own expense Bayview Pub at Gladesville   https://bayviewgladesville.com.au \nRSVP TO: Anna Miller and Corinne Drouin via email only on swicdiscoversydneywalks@gmail.com \nRSVP BY: Monday\, 9 October 2023 \nTRANSPORT: Any bus which starts with 5….
