SUMMARY:East Meets West Lunch – Amah by Ho Jiak Restaurant
DESCRIPTION:This month we go for Malaysian at Amah by Ho Jiak Restaurant at the Chatswood Interchange. Amah means grandmother in a few Chinese dialects. Amah’s Head Chef is Hun Loong who was the former Head Chef of Mr. Wong\, along with Executive Chef of Ho Jiak\, Junda Khoo\, bring flair and sophistication to home-style Malaysian cooking in an ode to Loong’s late grandmother – the sole reason for the restaurant’s inception. \nMalaysian food is a lot more than just Laksa. Malaysian cuisine is a result of historical migrations from many different countries. Malaysian citizens today consist of the ethnic groups Malay Bumiputera (67.4%)\, Chinese (24.6%)\, Indians (7.3%) and Others (0.7%). \nThe Malaysians are spoiled for a myriad of choices when they eat out. You might have been confused in the past when you had Malaysian dishes – why do they taste just like Chinese food\, sometimes totally Indian\, sometimes very similar to Indonesian (Malay Bumiputera)? They are all Malaysian. Each ethnic group has their own specialty – Hainanese Chicken Rice (Chinese)\, Roti Canai (Indian)\, Nasi Lemak (Malay Bumiputera) just to name a few better known dishes among the Australians. \nOh\, too much to talk about here\, you have to visit Malaysia to find out about it yourself or join us for this lunch. \nDATE: Thursday 2 March 2023 \nTIME: 12.00pm – 2.00pm \nVENUE: Kiosk 1&2\, The District\, Podium Level\, Chatswood Interchange\,\n436 Victoria Avenue\, Chatswood TEL: (02) 91704714 \nWebsite: https://www.hojiak.com.au/chatswood/ \nCOST: $96.00 (includes gratuity). You can order drinks but please bring cash to pay the organisers (i.e. Pauline\, Sue or Sandy) for the drinks that you order in case the restaurant does not want to split the bill. THIS WILL HELP THE ORGANISERS GREATLY. \nRSVP TO: Sue Roberts suejackharry@yahoo.com.au \nPlease do not pay until you have received a confirmation email from Sue. \nRSVP BY: 24 February 2023 \nPAYMENT OPTIONS: \nPayment Option 1 (Preferred): By Credit Card through the Payments section of the website \nPayment Option 2: Online (direct deposit) into the SWIC bank account \nAccount Name: SWIC Inc. \nBSB No: 112-879 \nAccount No: 431-019-281 \nDescription: EMW + your initial and surname \nTRANSPORT: Amah by Ho Jiak is in Chatswood Interchange on top of the Chatswood Train Station. SUMMARY:Art & Culture - Guided Tour of Yiribana Gallery
DESCRIPTION:For those of you who attended our Art & Culture event in December\, ‘Discover the Art and Architecture of the new Sydney Modern’\, and for those members who have already explored the new building\, we have organised an additional guided tour on Tuesday 21 February 2023. The newly relocated Yiribana Gallery is the first gallery that visitors encounter in the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ new North Building. The inaugural display is inspired by a word from the Aboriginal language of Sydney: burbangana. Meaning to ’take hold of my hand and help me up’\, burbangana is akin to an invitation. It is imbued with generosity and care. It emphasises the connections between people. \nThe exhibited works touch on moments of burbangana in differing ways. Some consider notions of care and guidance through familial relationships. Others offer philosophies for living and profile the intricacies of cultural inheritance\, or they examine ongoing complexities of history and resilience. \nSeveral new acquisitions are displayed alongside collection highlights – including works by Richard Bell\, Emily Kame Kngwarreye\, Reko Rennie\, Yhonnie Scarce and Rover Thomas – showcasing the diversity of practice across the country\, and across time\, media and art styles. \nLorraine Connelly-Northey’s major commission Narrbong-galang (many bags)\, made from rusted and salvaged metals\, is prominently displayed in the 20-metre-long Yiribana window\, which is visible to the public both night and day. \nYiribana means ’this way’ in the Sydney language and was the name given to the Art Gallery’s dedicated space for the display of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art when it opened in November 1994. Yiribana has a rich legacy of highlighting the depth and dynamism of art practice across Indigenous Australia. \nDATE: Tuesday 21 February 2023 \nTIME: 9.30am -11.00am (approximately) \nVENUE: Art Gallery of NSW\, on Gadigal Country – North Building  Art Gallery Road The Domain\, Sydney NSW 2000. \nMEETING PLACE: The Welcome Hub in the Plaza of the new building. After cloaking at the desk outside the Gallery\, one of the Welcome Hosts will escort our group inside where we will be fitted with headsets and head off with our guide. The tour will last for approximately 1 to 1.25 hours. You are then free to explore other exhibitions at leisure. \nCOST: $32.00 \nRSVP TO:   Kay Nicholas Email: swic.artandculture@gmail.com with your name and mobile phone number. \nRSVP BY: 10 February 2023. When the event is full we will go to ‘Waitlist’.  Do not pay until your place is confirmed. We will always endeavour to get back within 24 hours. If you have not heard back please SMS:  Kay Nicholas: 0438469044 \nPAYMENT OPTIONS: \nPayment Option 1 (Preferred): By Credit Card through the Payments section of the website \nPayment Option 2: Online (direct deposit) into the SWIC bank account \nAccount Name: SWIC Inc. \nBSB No: 112-879 \nAccount No: 431-019-281 \nDescription: A&C Yuribana + your initial and surname \nTRANSPORT: The NSW Art Gallery is located on the Eastern side of Sydney’s CBD\, next to the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Domain\, just down the road from St Mary’s Cathedral.  The Art Gallery is approximately a 5-minute walk from Macquarie Street\, across the Domain\, or from Hyde Park. SUMMARY:Theatre Group – ‘A Broadcast Coup’
DESCRIPTION:For our first theatre outing for 2023\, we will go to the Ensemble Theatre to see the long-awaited world premiere of writer and broadcaster\, Melanie Tait’s (‘The Appleton Ladies’ Potato Race’) thought-provoking\, sharp comedy\, A BROADCAST COUP. \nA major highlight of the 2023 Sydney Festival\, A BROADCAST COUP incisively delves into the abuse of power and lack of accountability from controversial public figures. \nCut-throat journalist Jez Connell is out for her next sting. It’s been a year since she brought down one of TV’s most lauded stars for behaving badly\, and now she’s got Michael King\, the top-rated darling of public radio\, in her sights. This time\, it’s personal. \nMelanie Tait says – “This play draws on my decade plus working in the media – from things I would see and hear across networks and\, to be honest\, just thought were part of working in that arena. It was only after the Me Too reckoning I began to see that some behaviour was unacceptable and could even change.” \nDirected by Janine Watson. \nDATE: Wednesday 15 February 2023 \nTIME: 7.30pm (90 minutes\, no interval) \nVENUE: The Ensemble Theatre\, 78 McDougall Street\, Kirribilli NSW 2061 \nTICKETS: Standard Adult $80\, Seniors Concession $77 \nJudith and Cherry have purchased tickets F17 and F18  \nTo buy your tickets visit https://boxoffice.ensemble.com.au/ or call (02) 8918 3460 \nPRE-THEATRE: (Optional): Join Judith and Cherry for pre-theatre Dinner at Bayly’s Bistro \nRSVP TO: Judith Nguyen at nguyenjm@bigpond.net.au indicating whether you would like to join us for dinner at 5.45pm\, as we need to book a table \n*********************************************************** \nTHEATRE GROUP – Looking Ahead in 2023 \nTo enable you to plan your diary for 2023\, below are the dates and selected plays for Theatre Group for 2023. SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - The Jewish Museum of Sydney
DESCRIPTION:To start our 2023 program of Monthly Activities\, we will be having a guided tour of the Jewish Museum by one of our own members who also volunteers at the Museum. \nThe Sydney Jewish Museum was established in 1992 by the generation of Holocaust survivors who came to Australia. They envisioned the Museum as a place which could hold their stories and personal objects\, memorialise those who were murdered during the Holocaust\, and within which the lessons from the past would be taught. \nThe Jewish Museum is a place that holds the voices of history\, and in which survivors still share their experiences with visitors. The Sydney Jewish Museum is an institution that gives history a voice through collecting and preserving historic objects\, commemorating and educating\, with a mission to challenge visitors’ perceptions of morality\, social justice\, democracy and human rights. \nThe Museum has welcomed multiple generations through their doors\, some as students who have returned later in life as adults. Visitors have learnt about the history of the murder of 6 million Jewish people in the Holocaust; they have kept their memories alive and taken away the important messages of tolerance and the dangers of prejudice. \nThirty years since its inception\, the Museum continues to give a voice to the victims of the Holocaust so their stories can start conversations and inspire change. \nAt the end of the tour\, for those who would like to have lunch\, I will book for us at the Rusty Rabbit. \nDATE: Thursday 19 January 2023 \nTIME: 10.30am to 12pm \nVENUE: Sydney Jewish Museum\, 148 Darlinghurst Rd\, Darlinghurst. Meet at reception at 10.25am \nCOST: $18.00. We will adjourn for lunch at the Rusty Rabbit. Please let me know if you would like to join us so that I can give them numbers. \nRSVP TO: Caren Trafford at swic.activitymonthly@gmail.com with your name and mobile phone number. \nRSVP BY: Thursday 12 January 2023 \nTRANSPORT: The Museum is minutes from Kings Cross and Oxford Street\, vibrant centres of activity for tourists and locals alike. \nGETTING THERE: \nThe Museum is located close to Sydney’s CBD\, with multiple options for public transport. \nFrom Central Station\, the 311 bus stops across the road from the Museum. Additional options include the 339 bus stopping on Flinders Street\, or the 440 bus stopping on Oxford Street\, both just a 10-minute walk to the Museum. \nFrom Kings Cross Station\, the walk to the Museum takes approximately 10 minutes. \nStreet parking is limited and ticketed. Parking is available in St Vincent’s Hospital car park.
