SUMMARY:Theatre Group – ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ at Roslyn Packer Theatre (STC)
DESCRIPTION:By Oscar Wilde \nDirected by Sarah Giles \n Hilarious\, naughty and Wilde \nThe fabulous Helen Thomson (Death of a Salesman\, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis) is back in this outrageous\, entertaining and brilliantly camp new vision of one of theatre’s greatest comedies. \nOscar Wilde’s dazzling wit meets the lush and bracingly contemporary style of acclaimed director Sarah Giles. This production will see The Importance of Being Earnest’s skewering of Victorian London’s silliness and snobbery in what promises to be an unforgettable night of hilarity. \nAlgernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing are two best friends who are both living double lives. In the city they’re playboys with a libertine reputation\, but in the country they assume pious alter egos to get away from it all. Things get sticky when love enters the mix and the men have to keep track of who they’re pretending to be and when. Floating haughtily above it all is the withering Lady Bracknell – played by Thomson – Victorian London’s socialite extraordinaire and the gatekeeper of all things ‘high society’. \nThe gold standard of theatrical comedy\, The Importance of Being Earnest is a razor-sharp and endlessly relevant reminder of our tendency to get hung up on small trivialities while the important things in life pass us by. \nApprox. duration 2 hrs 20 mins (including interval) \nDATE: Thursday 14 September 2023 \nTIME: 7.30pm \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: Tickets are $111.00 (Seniors) \nJudith and Cherry have purchased seats B26 and B27 \nTo buy your tickets visit www.sydneytheatrecompany.com \nPRE-THEATRE DRINKS/SNACKS (Optional): There will also be the option to join us for pre-theatre drinks/small food or boards at The Theatre Bar at the End of the Wharf. SUMMARY:East Meets West Lunch – YX Mini Hotpot - Eastwood
DESCRIPTION:Have you tried Chinese hotpot before? If not\, come and join us for this fun experience at YX Mini Hotpot in Eastwood in September. Hotpot comes with many different styles and names and is one of the most favourite ways to eat a meal among Asians. Each country or even a region in a country has a different version of hotpot. \nTraditionally\, the hotpot refers to a big pot of steaming soup heated by charcoal where everyone cooks the raw ingredients in the same pot of soup. But things have changed in the modern days. At YX\, each of us will have an individual induction with a pot of soup of your choice from the menu then we will cook the shared raw ingredients (meat\, fish\, veggies\, mushrooms\, tofu…) in your own pot of soup. There will be a station where we prepare our own dipping sauce. \nThere is an option to meet at 11:00am for a stroll in the Chinese side of Eastwood before the lunch to browse or buy Asian groceries\, pastries\, fruits and veggies. Details will be sent to those we are interested later on. \nDATE: Thursday 7 September 2023 \nTIME: 12.00pm – 2.00pm \nVENUE: Shop 1B/14 Glen St\, Eastwood 2122 TEL: 0451 738 668 Website: https://www.yxgroup.com.au/en/home.html \nCOST: $69 (includes gratuity and service charges). This restaurant does not split bill. Please bring cash to pay the organisers (i.e. Pauline\, Sue or Sandy) for the drinks that you order. THIS WILL HELP THE ORGANISERS GREATLY. \nRSVP TO: Sandy Tay sgtay@yahoo.com \nPlease do not pay until you have received a confirmation email from Sandy. \nRSVP BY: Friday 1 September 2023 \nPAYMENT OPTIONS: \nPayment Option 1 (Preferred): By Credit Card through the Payments section of the website \nPayment Option 2: Online (direct deposit) into the SWIC bank account \nAccount Name: SWIC Inc. \nBSB No: 112-879 \nAccount No: 431-019-281 \nDescription: EMW + your initial and surname \nTRANSPORT:  YX Mini Hotpot is 500 meters from Eastwood Train Station via W Parade and Hillview Ln.

SUMMARY:Challenging Walk – The Fourth Leg of Bondi to Manly Walk – Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo Wharf
DESCRIPTION:At the end of 2018\, six city councils along with other agencies\, decided to create a coastal and harbour-side walking track between two famous beaches in Sydney\, Bondi Beach and Manly Beach. The result of this collaboration is the epic 80km Bondi to Manly Walk. The details can be found on www.bonditomanly.com or the B2M app. We will walk the Bondi to Manly Walk in seven stages together\, walking one stage at a time on the first Tuesday of the month from June to December. \nIn September\, we will do the fourth leg of Bondi to Manly Walk from Circular Quay to to Taronga Zoo Wharf. The walk is approximately 14.5km with an elevation gain of 282m. The walk will take around 3.5 hours to complete. \nStarting the day by exploring The Rocks and crossing the Harbour Bridge\, we will be able to see parts of where we have been and where we are going. From here\, we will explore parts of Kirribilli\, such as Admiralty House\, Kirribilli House and Sub Base Platypus\, before continuing through to Neutral Bay\, where May Gibbs’ Nutcote house is located. Continuing to Cremorne Point Reserve\, we will pass one of Sydney’s impressive seawater pools; MacCallum Pool. Robertson Lighthouse marks the end of Cremorne Point\, which boasts magnificent views of Sydney Harbour and is the perfect spot for a scenic picnic/lunch break. \nFollowing the trail\, we will find ourselves passing through Mosman Bay\, then arriving at Sirius Cove and\, finally\, at Taronga Zoo. SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - Mary MacKillop Museum and House
DESCRIPTION:Since opening in 1995\, the museum has been engaging visitors with the remarkable story of Mary MacKillop [1842 – 1909]\, Australia’s first Saint and the co-founder of the order Julian Tenison Woods [1832 – 1889]. The museum is housed in the original ‘Practice School’ for novices built in the 1900s. It now offers visitors a window into the mid colonial to the pre federation period of Australian history.\nThe museum is a ministry of the Sisters of Saint Joseph and is located on the site in which Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop is buried. The Mary MacKillop Memorial Chapel is adjacent to the museum and is an integral part of a visitor’s experience to the site. \nThe museum is steeped in the story of the growth of the Catholic Church in Australia\, English Protestant and Irish Catholic division and the plight of the under classes.\nThe museum and the Mary MacKillop Memorial Chapel celebrate the legacy of a humble woman and the priest\, scientist and explorer who forged a new approach in serving the poor. \nThe outing will be self-guided however\, there is a café on site and we can all meet for a coffee/tea/snack at the café after we’ve strolled around the museum. The suggested time that we spend in the museum is around 90 minutes. \nDATE: Thursday 24 August 2023 \nTIME: 10.30am-12.00pm \nVENUE: Mary MacKillop Place Museum is located at: 7 Mount Street\, North Sydney\, NSW\, 2060\, Australia \nCOST: $8.00 \nRSVP TO: Caren Trafford: swic.activitymonthly@gmail.com   \nCaren Trafford\, Monthly Activity Organiser \n RSVP BY: 17 August 2023 \nPAYMENT OPTIONS \nPayment Option 1 (Preferred): By Credit Card through the Payments section of the website \nPayment Option 2: Online (direct deposit) into the SWIC bank account \nAccount Name: SWIC Inc. \nBSB No: 112-879 \nAccount No: 431-019-281 \nDescription: Mary MacKillop Museum and Home + your initial and surname

SUMMARY:Art and Culture - Tour NSW Government House (Tour full)
DESCRIPTION:Our August Art and Culture event is a SWIC Guided Tour of NSW Government House\, the Official Residence and Office of Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC\, 39th Governor of New South Wales and Mr Dennis Wilson. Her Excellency is the 28th Governor to occupy this Government House and has held the position since 2 May 2019. \nIn 1788\, soon after a British settlement was established at Sydney Cove\, the first Governor of the colony of New South Wales\, Governor Arthur Phillip\, laid the foundations of Sydney’s first Government House.  It was located in Bridge Street (on the site of the Museum of Sydney) and was home to successive governors until 1845 when Governor Sir George Gipps\, 9th Governor of New South Wales took up residence in the present Government House. Locally quarried sandstone was used for the construction of this new House. Its location and architectural Elizabethan Gothic Revival style was influenced by the existing Governor’s Stables\, that had been completed in 1821 (now the Conservatorium of Music located at the main entry gates to Government House). The present Government House is characterised by castellated towers and other medieval features. \nOver the years the building has been extended\, refurbished and modernised to suit the tastes and needs of successive Governors. Today\, the House holds a significant collection of portraits\, furniture\, decorative arts and gubernatorial memorabilia as a result of Vice Regal patronage. \nPLEASE NOTE: Government House Sydney is the official residence and office of the Governor of New South Wales. For security purposes SWIC is required to complete a Visitor Registration Form prior to your attendance on this tour. Your name and valid identification is mandatory. One of the following will suffice. (Passport number\, Driver’s license number\, Medicare Card number\, Senior’s card number). \nDATE: Friday 18 August 2023 \n TIME: There will be two tours 11am/11.15am \nTour 1 commences at 11am \nTour 2 commences at 11.15am \nTour Duration:  1 hour plus extra time if you wish to do a self-guided tour of the grounds. \nVENUE: NSW Government House \nADDRESS: Government House Sydney\nMacquarie Street\nSYDNEY NSW 2000 \nPHONE: 02 9228 4111 \nMEETING PLACE: To be advised for those attending \nCOST: Nil Cost \nRSVP TO: Kay Nicholas Email: swic.artandculture@gmail.com Mobile:  0438469044 \nRSVP BY: 8 August 2023 \nPlease Note: RSVP by Email with your full name and contact phone number. \nWe will contact you after the closing date for your preferred identification information. \nThere are a maximum of 30 attendees for this event. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - "The Weekend" - Belvoir Street Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Charlotte Wood – Original Author\nSue Smith – Adapter\nSarah Goodes – Director\n\nFour women have known each other for decades\, and have a friendship that goes with it – good-humoured\, caring\, and forthright when required. But Sylvie has died\, and when the remaining three come together to pack up her beach house\, they find maybe they haven’t been as honest – or as good friends – as they thought. \nAdele (Belinda Giblin)\, a once-well-known actress\, Wendy (Melita Durisic)\, a high-profile academic\, and Jude (Toni Scanlan)\, who ran one of the city’s most celebrated restaurants\, learn things they should have learned years ago. There’s a difference between growing old\, and growing wise. \nAnd at the heart of it all\, an old dog keeps them company\, silently bearing witness to the folly of age\, and the warmth of true friendship. \nCharlotte Wood’s novel really struck a chord with many readers\, so when a playwright as fine as Sue Smith approached us about turning it into a play for Belvoir we jumped. This is a special play – moving\, honest\, thoughtful\, and a gift for three of our finest actors. This is heartland stuff. – Eamon \nThe Weekend is the proud recipient of the Blake Beckett Trust Award. \nDATE: Thursday 10 August 2023 \nTIME: 7.30pm \nVENUE: Upstairs Theatre\, Belvoir Street Theatre\, Gadigal Country\, 25 Belvoir Street\, Surry Hills\, NSW 2010 \nTICKETS: Seniors Concession $72 \nJudith and Cherry have purchased tickets F31 and F32 \n To buy your tickets visit www.belvoir.com.au or ring the box office on 9699 3444 \nPRE-THEATRE: (Optional): Join Judith and Cherry for pre-theatre Drinks and Snacks downstairs at Belvoir at 6.00pm \nRSVP TO: Judith Nguyen at nguyenjm@bigpond.net.au \nRSVP BY: 7 August 2023 \n************************************************************************************* \nTHEATRE GROUP – Looking Ahead in 2023 \nTo enable you to plan your diary for the rest of 2023\, below are the dates and selected plays that we are yet to see. SUMMARY:Theatre Group – ‘On the Beach’ at Roslyn Packer Theatre (STC)
DESCRIPTION:By Nevil Shute\nAdapted for the stage by Tommy Murphy\nDirected by Kip Williams \nStanding on the edge \nTwo of Australia’s great theatre-makers\, Artistic Director Kip Williams and playwright Tommy Murphy (Foxtel’s The Twelve\, Holding the Man) join forces for this world premiere STC commission: a vast\, poetic and haunting story of community\, dignity and love in dark times. \nIn 1957\, Nevil Shute’s classic novel On the Beach introduced the world to an uncanny post-apocalyptic vision that sees Australia as one of the last surviving outposts of civilisation on a planet destroyed by nuclear fallout. Two years later it was transformed into a classic film starring Gregory Peck\, Ava Gardner and Fred Astaire. \nA small group of friends in Melbourne – some local\, some survivors from the US Navy – are living out their eerily prosaic lives and loves in the wake of World War III. But when a mysterious distress call rings out across the Pacific Ocean\, the characters are called to choose between duty to the ones they love and duty to the human race. \nIn the spirit of past productions like Chimerica and The Harp in the South: Part One and Part Two\, Williams brings his sumptuous\, innovative style to match Murphy’s beautiful\, soulful writing. On the Beach is a new and gripping portrait of Australian society\, a prescient insight into the times we are living through and a deeply poignant reverie on the indestructible power of human connection. \nApprox. duration 2 hrs 40 mins (including interval)\nContent Suicide \nDATE: Wednesday 19 July 2023 \nTIME: 7.30pm \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: Tickets are $65.00 and $61.00 for this PREVIEW PERFORMANCE \nJudith and Cherry have purchased seats C19 and C20 \nTo buy your tickets visit www.sydneytheatrecompany.com \nPRE-THEATRE DRINKS/SNACKS (Optional): There will also be the option to join us for pre-theatre drinks/snacks at a bar in Walsh Bay.
