SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - Once Upon A Time And Crime In Paddington - WAITLIST
DESCRIPTION:Revealing the secrets and stories of Paddington’s sensational past. A walking tour on the streets of Paddington. \n\n2.5 hour small-group tour\nFinishing at The Royal Hotel\, Five Ways\nLed by a local Crime Historian Guide\n\nThe Paddington we know today is a chic and sophisticated inner-city suburb with elegant rows of terrace houses\, charming cafes\, lively pubs and boutique shopping.\nBut rewind just half a century and you’ll find yourself in a very different world. A world of crime\, murder\, slums\, sly-grog\, burglary\, gambling\, rats\, snakes\, sewers\, mysteries\, misfits\, hold-ups\, drugs\, raids\, riots and revenge. \nWhile the old-fashioned streets of Paddington remain much as they once were many generations ago\, this tour revisits the rags that came before the recent riches. Delving into the forgotten lives of its former residents\, we’ll dig up tales of vice and villainy that played out between the 1890s and the 1960s. \nThese were times when struggling tenants squished into decaying Victorian villas. Strange and sinister stories brewed behind closed doors and inside corner pubs. And newspaper articles summed up Paddington’s place in Sydney with shocking titles such as: \n\n“The House of Death”\n“Chased with an Axe” \n“I stabbed her — I love her”\n“Double killing at drink party”\n\nSunshine or rain\, the tour will proceed as planned unless there is a severe weather warning in which case we will contact you to reschedule the tour. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes\, sunglasses\, a hat\, sunscreen and/ or wet weather gear. A water bottle is also recommended. \n About our guide Max Burns-McRuvie \n\nMax Burns-McRuvie is a Sydney historian and the director of Journey Walks. With over 15 years of experience\, Max has created and led history and crime tours in cities like Sydney\, Barcelona\, and Amsterdam\, focusing on uncovering urban underworlds\, bringing true crime stories to life\, and reviving colorful characters from the past.To back up his nerdiness: Max holds a Master of Museum and Heritage Studies from Sydney University\, a Bachelor of English and History from the University of NSW\, and Honours in European History from UVA (Amsterdam). His Master’s thesis explored the origins of Sydney’s tourism industry in the 19th century and the city’s emergence as an international travel destination\n\nDATE: Thursday 20 March 2025 \nTIME: 10.30.am – 1.00pm. Please stay afterwards for a coffee at a nearby café if you are able \nVENUE: Meet at 10.20am for 10.30am at Paddington Police Station: 16 Jersey road\, Paddington. SUMMARY:Art and Culture – Visit to Cao Fei: My City is Yours Exhibition - Art Gallery NSW North Building
DESCRIPTION:Leading Chinese contemporary artist Cao Fei brings the buzzing energy of the city to the Art Gallery of New South Wales for the artist’s first major solo exhibition in Australia\, is a Sydney-exclusive exhibition staged as part of the Sydney International Art Series 2024–25\, featuring key works from the artist’s 30-year career\, including the premiere of two new commissions. \nVoted by Art Review Magazine in 2023 as one of the art world’s 10 most influential people\, Cao Fei has documented China’s rapid urbanisation\, globalisation and digital revolution for more than two decades\, interpreting the energy of the contemporary metropolis in mesmerising films\, photography and large-scale interactive and immersive installations. \nSpanning the Ainsworth Family Gallery’s 1300-square-metre space in the Art Gallery’s Naala Badu building\, Cao’s exhibition explores China’s rapid urban\, technological and social transformations from the Y2K period to today. Designed by the artist and Hong Kong’s Beau Architects\, the exhibition takes the form of a cityscape. Divided into a series of civic zones – a central plaza\, a theatre\, a restaurant\, a factory and a haven for spiritual contemplation – the exhibition’s design is inspired by China’s recent urban transformation. \nDATE: Tuesday 18 March 2025 \nTIME:  12 noon to 2.00pm (approximately) \nVENUE:  Art Gallery NSW North Building Level: -2 \nADDRESS:  Art Gallery Rd\, The Domain Sydney NSW 2000 \nMEETING PLACE: at New North Building:  Level – 2 adjacent to entry to the exhibition \nTime: 11.55am for a 12noon introductory talk. \nPLEASE NOTE: Given the nature of the exhibition the Art Gallery do not conduct guided tours of this exhibition.
