You are invited to join Art & Culture for an exclusive SWIC-only tour of the Rose Seidler House on Tuesday 15 October 2019. Our hosts will be Sydney Living Museums.
The Rose Seidler House, now a museum managed by Sydney Living Museums, is one of the finest examples of mid-20th Century modern domestic architecture in Australia. Built by Harry Seidler for his parents in 1948-1950, the radical design of this influential house integrated architecture, art and technology in a bold and optimistic vision for a new way of living. The house in its garden setting is an authentic representation of Harry’s early vision for Australian architecture. The furniture and interiors also form one of Australia’s most important mid-century collections of domestic design. Today it is still surrounded by bushland with panoramic views of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, and its furniture and fittings form one of the most complete and intact post-World War II design collections in public ownership. The house, contents and grounds have all been carefully restored to their original ’50s glory.
Please note that because of the fragility of the furnishings and the historic nature of the property our numbers are strictly limited. We have therefore arranged TWO TOURS, BACK-TO-BACK.
Tour 1: 10.30am Tour 2: 11.30am
Please:
- RSVP early
- RSVP before payment to ascertain availability
- After advice from the organiser of availability on the tour kindly pay in order to confirm your place
Note: SWIC will prepay this event so there will be no refunds after the close-by date of 28 September 2019.
Sydney Living Museums advise the following:
- Mobility – The house is not accessible by wheelchair and while people with limited mobility can access the site, there is a set of stairs (about 15) that leads to the main floor of the house. There is no opportunity to sit down within the house as much of the furniture is original and fragile. The grounds and carpark are quite rough terrain.
- Bags, food and drink are not permitted in the house
- Mobile phones must be turned off during the program
- Wet weather – tours will go ahead in all weather conditions so please come prepared
- Wear your best socks! For the protection of the house, you will be asked to remove your shoes prior to admission. Booties will be provided.
