Monthly Activity – Architecture Tour of Castlecrag (1st TOUR FULL)

Thursday, September 24, 2020 @ 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

STOP PRESS! Due to popular demand, this tour is being repeated on 30 September 2020. There are 5 spots available. RSVP details are below.

This two hour architecture walk explores one of Sydney’s most picturesque suburbs, Castlecrag, with houses by many of Australia’s most interesting practitioners of architecture, thus the name ‘Hidden Architectural Hot Spot’.

Discover the many Griffin pathways winding down and through Castlecrag, leading to many architectural gems – new, contemporary and heritage designed houses.

Castlecrag was recognised as a special place by Canberra’s designer Walter Burley Griffin and his partner Marion Mahony back in the 1920s. They made a plan for Castlecrag to be developed as the perfect garden suburb surrounded by trees.

Tour leader Ben Gerstel is a local architect, and he will reveal the suburb’s development from its earliest days as well as the most interesting architecture in its hilly streets by architects as familiar as Harry Seidler and as little known as Hugh Buhrich.
