Monthly Activity – Behind the Scenes: Garvan Institute of Medical Research

Thursday, March 28, 2019 @ 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research is an Australian biomedical research institute specialising in genetic and molecular technologies. You may remember their fascinating presentation at the SWIC Christmas luncheon in December 2018.

In 2014 Garvan became one of only three organisations in the world with the next generation of genome sequencing giving the ability to predict, prevent and treat disease. Founded in 1963, Garvan’s research is focused on the major diseases that affect today’s society: cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis and Parkinson’s disease, as well as eating disorders, autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. They study the interlinked causes from genetics to lifestyle and diet.

In this tour, we will be learning about their history, their breakthrough research and touring the state-of-the-art scientific facility which houses some of the world’s best scientific minds under one roof.
