Sub Base Platypus in North Sydney hasn’t always been a community recreation and work hub. Previously, the historic waterfront site hosted a gas works, torpedo factory and submarine base.
From the late 1900s until the end of the 20th century, the site met the energy needs of Sydney’s North Shore (1877-1937) and contributed to the defence of Australia (1942-1999).
Eager to journey through this layered history? This 60-minute tour is an opportunity to explore a historic destination that was off-limits to the public for 140+ years!
Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, you’ll explore the lower and upper levels of Sub Base Platypus, including the Torpedo Factory Precinct.
Unveiled in September 2023, this contemporary precinct boasts a decommissioned Mark VIII torpedo, amongst other historical artefacts, as well a sweeping view of Neutral Bay and an original, three-piece artwork that celebrates Country.

MEET: The tour meets at the blue torpedo on Level 2 of the car park area (on the High Street side). It is also fully accessible. There is a lift on site as well if needed.

- Please come dressed for all weather. Tours will depart in all weather conditions unless it is deemed unsafe to do so.
- Please ensure you have checked the Sydney Ferry timetable to ensure you arrive on time if you are arriving via ferry: Ferry | transportnsw.info
- There is limited, unmetered street parking on High Street. Paid parking is available in the High Street car park between 7am and 9pm daily. Entry is via 120 High Street. Visitors are permitted to park their vehicles up to a maximum of 3 hours per day. The first hour is free and a $5 fee applies per subsequent hour.
