Elizabeth Farm was the home of John and Elizabeth Macarthur and the centre of their mercantile and farming empire for over 35 years. The homestead is regarded as the oldest and most historic building in Australia and is an important site in the development of the wool industry.
A restful homestead with a restless history. Dharug dispossession. Convict rebellion. The toppling of governors. Family turmoil. Built in 1793 for the young military couple John and Elizabeth Macarthur and their growing family, Elizabeth Farm today is an ‘access all areas’ museum. Set within a re-created 1830s garden, Elizabeth Farm is currently a house museum, opened in 1984 and owned by Sydney Living Museums, formerly the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales.
A combination of history and gardens, join us on this tour of Elizabeth Farm and discover more about the Macarthurs and colonial life in NSW.
