DESCRIPTION:Our June event is a guided tour of the 2022 Archibald Prize Exhibition\, fondly known as ‘The Archies’. This exhibition is often described as Australia’s most engaging art event and is eagerly anticipated by artists and audiences alike. Of great interest each year is the announcement of The Packing Room Prize. Congratulations to Archibald Prize finalist Claus Stangl\, for his portrait of director writer\, actor and producer Taika Waititi (pictured). \nThe Archibald Prize\, first awarded in 1921\, is one of Australia’s favourite art awards\, and one of its most prestigious. Awarded to the best portrait painting\, it is a who’s who of Australian culture – from politicians to celebrities\, sporting heroes to artists. DESCRIPTION:Art & Culture will resume its 2020 Calendar with a private tour to the Brett Whiteley Studio Gallery.  The Brett Whiteley Studio was the workplace and home of Australian artist Brett Whiteley (1939–1992). It has been managed as a museum by the Art Gallery of NSW since 1995. \nOur tour will include a short introduction to the studio and to Brett Whiteley the artist as well as highlighted works from the new exhibition\, Feathers and Flight. In this exhibition of drawings\, paintings and sculpture\, Brett Whiteley expresses his joy\, humour and love through birds. \nPlease note that the studio can only accommodate reduced numbers of visitors and tour guests as a result of COVID-19 government regulations (10 people per tour). We will therefore have two tours. The first tour will commence at 10.30am and the second tour will commence at 11.45am.  All members are respectfully requested by the Studio to maintain social distancing within the studio and respond accordingly to any requests from Gallery staff. \nChanges Effecting Organisation for Art and Culture Tours \n\nMost venues require organisers of group tours to send them a guest list of attendees and a phone contact for each guest 7-10 days prior to a visit/tour. DESCRIPTION:Please join Art & Culture on 17 March for ‘Margaret’s Gift’ at the SH Erwin Gallery\, one of Sydney’s leading public art institutions located in the historic National Trust Centre at Observatory Hill. \nMargaret Olley (1923- 2011) is one of Australia’s most significant still life and interior artists. \nMargaret was also a prolific collector of art works. In the course of her lifetime\, and following her death\, she donated hundreds of art works from her collection to cultural institutions across Australia\, including Cressida Campbell’s ‘White Waratah’ 2000 (image above). This exhibition celebrates her legacy. \nThe exhibition has been curated by Renee Porter and brings together over 65 works from various collections. The  July concert\, back by popular demand\, will be performed by the renowned big-band “Dr V’s Swing Thing” directed by ARIA winning artist Vlad Khusid who will take us through a journey of jazz masterpieces with Sydney jazz vocalist Jo Fabro. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy something a little different in July and join Art & Culture for a visit to the Hazelhurst Gallery and Arts Centre for a tour of the gallery’s current exhibition that colourfully charts the work of Marion Hall Best\, whose interior decorating style vibrated with colour through her signature glazed painted finishes on walls and ceilings. On display is original furniture\, fabrics\, furnishings and fashion over the four decades from the mid-1930s. Described as ‘electrifying\, vital and avant-garde’\, Best’s interior decorating schemes were unashamedly modern at a time when other interior designers preferred a subdued palette and period furniture. Best was inspired by the modernist movement and colour theory of artists of the interwar years. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In June\, join us for a SWIC Art & Culture event with a difference. \nWe have organised visits to the home studios of some of the Pittwater Artists who are participating in the 2017 Pittwater Artist Trail. \nOur first stop at 11.00am will be the studio of Penel Bigg at Elanora Heights. \nGlass-glowing colours\, fluid forms\, beautiful beads\, molten magic. Penel melts rods of glass in the flame of a large burner and then uses heat and gravity and a few special tools to create all manner of lovely things. From beads that will be made up into gorgeous jewellery\, to intricately patterned perfume bottles to fantastical creatures\, every day in the studio is an adventure. \nOur second stop \nWe will then head to Mona Vale for lunch and a visit to another studio in Mona Vale village that specialises in homewares (to be confirmed). \nOur third stop (after 1.30 pm) will be the studio of Pittwater artist\, Vicki Ratcliff \, at Mona Vale. \nVick’s works reflect her love for the abundant natural beauty of Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
