SUMMARY:November Monthly Activity - Tour of the Coal Loader\, Waverton
DESCRIPTION:The Coal Loader\, on the western side of Waverton peninsula\, is an interesting part of Sydney’s history in a spectacular setting overlooking the Harbour. \nA former industrial site that operated from the early 1920s to the early 1990s\, some remnants from The Coal Loader still exist\, including  four impressive carved tunnels used as rail lines to transport coal. One of these tunnels is available to walk through and the others are home to hundreds of local bats. An old wharf where coal was loaded still stands. You can’t walk along it\, but it’s a great view from the shore. \nThe local North Sydney Council has developed The Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability\, with spaces for recreation and community allotment gardens. Well laid out information boards give the history of the site and there is a nice cafe for refreshments. \nDATE: Thursday 22 November 2018 \nTIME: 10.30am-12.00pm \nVENUE: 2 Balls Head Drive\, Waverton 2060 \nCOST: Entry to the Coal Loader  is free \nYou can also enjoy a coffee or lunch at the Coal Loader Café (at own expense) \nTRANSPORT: Limited street parking. Ten minutes walk from Waverton train station \nRSVP TO: Beatrice de Lucey – bde11306@tpg.com.au – 0422 350834 \nRSVP BY: Thursday 15 November 2018

SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - Botanical Enigma: The Calyx
DESCRIPTION:As an extra activity in this five-week month we are going to visit the Royal Botanic Gardens where spring flowers should be at their best. The Calyx opened in 2017. Designed by PTW Architects with landscape architecture by McGregor Coxall\, it presents a striking geometric volume that is a protective layer and a lens that frames cinematic moments. Of further interest – the Calyx presents the most devious plants in the plant world. \nThe Calyx will re-open on 1 October with a new display – ‘Plants with Bite’ – and anyone who knows this place will know what a show they put on. If you haven’t been before\, you are in for a real treat. There is a café where we can have lunch or coffee. \nDATE: Tuesday 16 October 2018 \nTIME: 10.00am – 12noon \nVENUE: Meet at The Customs House at Circular Quay at 9.50am and walk up to the gardens – or meet at the entrance to the Calyx \nCOST: A gold coin donation at the Calyx. Refreshments at own expense \nTRANSPORT: Train\, Bus or Ferry \nRSVP TO: Beatrice de Lucey – bde11306@tpg.com.au – 0422 350834 \nRSVP BY: Friday 12 October 2018
