SUMMARY:Out 'n' About : 2026 Salon des Refusés - SOLD OUT\, WAITLIST ONLY
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT! \nThe Salon des Refusés was initiated by the S.H. Ervin Gallery in 1992 in response to the large number of works entered into the Archibald Prize which were not selected for display in the official exhibition. The Archibald Prize is one of Australia’s most high profile and respected awards which attracts hundreds of entries each year and the S.H. Ervin Gallery’s ‘alternative’ selection has become a much-anticipated feature of the Sydney scene. \nEach year the S.H.Ervin Gallery panel is invited to go behind the scenes of the judging process for the annual Archibald Prize for portraiture and Wynne Prize for landscape painting and figure sculpture at the Art Gallery of New South Wales\, to select an exhibition from the many hundreds of works entered in both prizes but not chosen for the official award exhibition. \nThe Salon des Refusés exhibition at the S.H. Ervin Gallery has established an excellent reputation that rivals the selections in the ‘official’ exhibition\, with works selected for quality\, diversity\, humour and experimentation\, and which examine contemporary art practices\, different approaches to portraiture and responses to the landscape. The S.H. Ervin Gallery is located in Observatory Hill Park at the National trust Centre. \n\nDATE: Thursday May 28th \nTIME: 9.45am – 10.45am (Guided Tour). SUMMARY:Behind the Scenes Glasshouse Tour at the Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:The Tropic of Capricorn is the most southern circle of latitude where the sun can be directly overhead. This is a walking tour in a behind the scenes workplace where our horticultural staff are working hard to maintain these gems of our plant collection. Enclosed footwear is preferred\, participants need to follow the directions of their guide and during the tour we will be entering hot\, humid tropical environments in relatively confined spaces within the glasshouses. \nThe tour finishes at the Fernery in the upper gardens near the Woolloomooloo gate opposite the Art Gallery of NSW on Mrs Macquarie’s Road. \nDo join us for this\, ‘behind the scenes’\, outing. \nDATE: Thursday 11 September \nTIME: 11.00 am – 12.45 pm. SUMMARY:SWIC Art & Culture and Monthly Activity - Magritte at the Art Gallery NSW
DESCRIPTION:Dear SWIC members\, \nThis January 2025\, Art and Culture Activity will combine with the Monthly Activity to offer our members a chance for a curated viewing of the Magritte Exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW. \nRené Magritte’s paintings of clouds\, hats\, pipes and apples are among the most recognisable images of surrealism. Renowned for his deadpan\, realist style\, the Belgian artist depicted ordinary objects and everyday settings\, revealing them to be more mysterious and enchanting than we could ever have imagined. \nMagritte is an in-depth retrospective featuring more than 100 works\, most of which have never before been seen in Australia. It journeys from the artist’s first avant-garde explorations and commercial works in the 1920s\, to his groundbreaking contributions to surrealism\, his surprising provocations of the 1940s\, and the renowned paintings of his final years\, before his death in 1967. \nEncounter iconic paintings that highlight Magritte’s profound influence on contemporary visual culture and discover rarely seen works that reveal his subversive sense of humour and the fierce independence of his artistic vision. \nThe exhibition has been organised by the Art Gallery of New South Wales with the close co-operation of the Magritte Foundation\, Brussels and in cooperation with the Menil Collection\, Houston. It has been made possible with the support of the NSW Government through Create NSW’s Blockbusters Funding initiative and its tourism and major events agency\, Destination NSW. SUMMARY:Harbourings: An architectural Walking tour with renowned Architect Eoghan Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Getting beyond the postcard view of the city and its two shimmering icons\, ‘Harbourings’ reveals Sydney at her rawest and most spectacular\, her most self–conscious and most corrupt! \nJoin us on this stroll around Sydney’s spectacular harbour edge\, from Circular Quay\, through the city’s great depository of memory – The Rocks – up Observatory Hill and on to Walsh Bay. The route is diverse\, spectacular and full of surprising recent projects as well as gritty historical reminders of the cities industrial and maritime past. \nBeginning with Circular Quay where the powerful forces of commerce are held back from the harbour by a bland concrete motorway\, we will discuss Opera House architect Jørn Utzon’s driving ideas for Sydney as well as his vision for the Quay. We will wander discuss controversial additions to the Museum of Contemporary Art and you will discover Sydney’s brutalist masterpiece\, the radical Sirius Apartment building by Tao Gofers recently reimagined by BVN. \nAs we explore the area we will pluck out some surprising contemporary gems in The Rocks and Millers Point before descending on the breath-taking Walsh Bay Finger Wharves\, a family of early 20th-Century industrial buildings that extend out into Sydney’s harbour. They are amongst the largest timber structures ever built\, romantic symbols of Sydney’s industrial maritime history that have been reimagined as a cultural and residential precinct. \nDATE: Wednesday November 27 \nYour Guide:\nEoghan Lewis is the principal architect of Eoghan Lewis Architects (http://www.eoghanlewis.com.au/) and founder of the Sydney Architecture Walks (http://www.sydneyarchitecture.org/). \nSAW reviews: https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Attraction_Review-g255060-d1891075-Reviews-Sydney_Architecture_Walks-Sydney_New_South_Wales.html \nTIME: 10.30am – 12.30pm. SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - Sydney Tramway Museum: Guided Tour and Tram Ride
DESCRIPTION:The Sydney Tramway Museum (operated by the South Pacific Electric Railway) is Australia’s oldest tramway museum and the largest in the southern hemisphere. It is located at Loftus in the southern suburbs of Sydney. \nIn 2001\, the museum was the recipient of the YMCA facade\, that was previously located at the corner of Pitt and Bathurst Street in the Sydney central business district. The facade was relocated by Meriton to make way for a new building being constructed at the same location. This huge\, impressive sandstone structure dating from the 1880s makes a spectacular backdrop when entering the museum complex from the front gates. The building is not finished yet and is still being worked on as funding permits. The gates from the original Gladesville Bridge were installed as the depot gates in 2010. \nThe 2018 film Ladies in Black had both live action scenes and film stock for CGI segments filmed around the Railway Square Waiting Shed that is located in the southern end of the museum site. \nJoin us for this unusual activity as we explore the history of trams in Sydney\, Australia and the world. \nDATE: (Note day change) Wednesday October 23rd at 11.00am   \nTIME: 11am – 1.00pm. SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - Parramatta Female Factory Precinct
DESCRIPTION:Dear Monthly Activists \nThis month we will visit the Female Factory in Parramatta \nParramatta Female Factory Institutions Precinct offers a unique insight into Australia’s past. Its historic institutions include the Parramatta Female Factory\, Parramatta Lunatic Asylum\, Roman Catholic Orphan School\, Parramatta Girls Home\, Kamballa & Taldree Children’s Shelter and the Norma Parker Detention Centre for women. \nAustralia’s first purpose-built institution for convict women\, the Parramatta Female Factory\, was a secure place of confinement\, industry and punishment modelled on the Workhouses and Bridewells of England. Convict women were viewed as ‘beyond redemption’ yet this is not reflected in the crimes for which they were transported with 65.3% having no prior convictions. The types of crimes punishable by transportation varied between England\, Scotland and Ireland. Theft predominated among the English and Scottish convicts\, whereas riot and sedition predominated among the Irish. While the English were more concerned with crimes protecting property and existing social order\, the Calvinistic Scots had severer sanctions for religious violations such as adultery\, immorality\, breaking the Sabbath and denial of the existence of God. Most were transported for 7 years\, lesser numbers for 14 years or life and usually after 2 or 3 years good behaviour\, were given a Ticket of Leave. \nDATE: Thursday 22 February 2024 \nTIME: 10.30am – 12.00pm There is a café on site if you would like to stay afterwards for lunch/coffee. \nVENUE: 5 Fleet Street\, North Parramatta (in the Cumberland Hospital site) \nMeeting at the low white Female Factory wall \nCOST: $10.00 \nRSVP TO: swic.activitymonthly@gmail.com .\nPlease add your phone number and the name of the outing: Parramatta Female Factory to\nCaren Trafford\, Monthly Activity Organiser \nRSVP BY: Thursday 15 February 2024 to Caren Trafford \nTRANSPORT: There is no parking on site – please park in Fleet Street. \n\nIn places the ground is uneven so closed-in walking shoes must be worn.\nThere are toilet facilities open at the café on the site.\nIn hot weather please wear a hat\, sunscreen and bring water\, inclement weather please bring an umbrella.\n\nAll guides are volunteers.  All money goes towards the fight to keep these buildings for all Australians. \nTravelling by Train \n\nExit left at the barrier/southern side of Parramatta Station (Westfield side) – walk north and under railway bridge into Church Street\, past St. John’s Church – turn right – shuttle bus stop in George Street.\nShuttle bus every 15 minutes – travels along O’Connell Street – past Parramatta Park.\nAlight at the Parramatta Leagues Club stop – walk North along O’Connell Street to Fennel Street and turn left\nWalk down to Fleet Street – enter at No. 5 Fleet Street (Cumberland Hospital site). SUMMARY:Monthly Activity -All About Utzon: The Opera House and Surrounds
DESCRIPTION:Both an in-depth and textured portrait of enigmatic Danish architect Jørn Utzon\, as well as the story of perhaps the 20th Centuries most ambitious architectural project\, this tour will be draw you in to the visionary world of the architect of Sydney Opera House. \nDiscussing the sources of Utzon’s deepest inspiration\, his working methods and influences\, we will chart the development of Utzon’s ideas and their materialisation in the platform\, concrete shells and ceramic skin of Sydney Opera House. You will discover the influence of towering 20th Century figures like Le Corbusier\, Alvar Aalto\, Eero Saarinen\, Mies van der Rohe\, Frank Lloyd Wright\, Antonio Gaudi and even Picasso on Utzon’s thinking and you will discover the ways in which his work was at once contemporary whilst drawing its inspiration from the work of the ancients. \nUtzon considered the six years he spent developing the interiors of the House the most productive of his career. None of this work was realised. Using discarded drawings\, models and prototypes\, Utzon’s unrealised design of the acoustic interiors\, glass walls and furniture – much of it ready for construction before he was forced to leave the project – will be discussed. \n \nYour Guide:\nEoghan Lewis is the principal architect of Eoghan Lewis Architects (http://www.eoghanlewis.com.au/) and founder of the Sydney Architecture Walks (http://www.sydneyarchitecture.org/). \nSAW reviews: https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Attraction_Review-g255060-d1891075-Reviews-Sydney_Architecture_Walks-Sydney_New_South_Wales.html \nDATE: Wednesday 29 November 2023 \nTIME: 10:15am for 10:30am start.
