DESCRIPTION:Tour summary: \nEstablished in 1936\, North Fort is a remnant military complex at North Head Sanctuary in Manly. \nStrategically placed at the northern entrance to Sydney Harbour\, the fort was part of a defence system that spanned 300km of coastline during World War II. \nThe Defence of Sydney Tour is an opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the men and women who served at North Fort. Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide\, you will marvel at heritage gun emplacements\, once capable of firing 26.4km\, and descend into the 200-metre-long military tunnel complex. Finally\, our guide will demystify an underground bunker once shrouded in secrecy: The Plotting Room. As you explore this facility\, concealed within bushland\, you’ll hear how our specialist volunteers faithfully restored it. \nTour Conditions   \n\nThe 90-minute North Fort tour includes paved bush tracks\, stairs\, and approx. 20 minutes in underground tunnels\, and in another 20 minutes in the underground Plotting Room. Please note\, access to and from the tunnels and plotting room are accessed by stairs (approximately the equivalent of two flights of stairs).\nThere is no access for mobility devices in the underground tunnels.\nThe tour will proceed regardless of weather. SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - Waverley Cemetery Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Monthly activity for April will be held the first Thursday in May owing to the 5th Thursday of April being ANZAC Day.\nThe physical location of the Cemetery on the cliffs above Bronte is a magnificent background and setting. The Waverley Cemetery is a heritage-listed cemetery on top of the cliffs at Bronte in the eastern suburbs of Sydney\, New South Wales\, Australia. Opened in 1877 and built by R. Watkins (cemetery lodge\, 1878) and P. Beddie (cemetery office\, 1915)\, the cemetery is noted for its largely intact Victorian and Edwardian monuments. It is regularly cited as being one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world. The cemetery contains the graves of many significant Australians including the poet Henry Lawson. Also known as General Cemetery Waverley.\nUnfortunately\, the topography is not suitable for people with mobility difficulties. The tours which last 90 minutes are conducted by volunteers who are members of the Friends of Waverley Cemeteries. Waverley Cemetery is the resting place of over one hundred thousand people and every grave tells a story. Led by the Friends of Waverley Cemeteries\, learn more about the prominent writers\, artists\, political figures\, activists\, and sporting heroes who are interred at the cemetery\, in addition to the everyday folk whose unique stories are also shared.\nWe will visit Henry Lawson’s grave\, Henry Kendall’s grave\, the Irish Memorial to name just a few of the highlights.\nPlease bring an umbrella if it looks like rain. All contingencies allowed for!\nIt is advised that you wear comfortable walking shoes as the tour will be at least 90 minutes duration. You are advised to carry water. DESCRIPTION:Dear Monthly Activists \nThis month we will visit the Female Factory in Parramatta \nParramatta Female Factory Institutions Precinct offers a unique insight into Australia’s past. Its historic institutions include the Parramatta Female Factory\, Parramatta Lunatic Asylum\, Roman Catholic Orphan School\, Parramatta Girls Home\, Kamballa & Taldree Children’s Shelter and the Norma Parker Detention Centre for women. \nAustralia’s first purpose-built institution for convict women\, the Parramatta Female Factory\, was a secure place of confinement\, industry and punishment modelled on the Workhouses and Bridewells of England. Convict women were viewed as ‘beyond redemption’ yet this is not reflected in the crimes for which they were transported with 65.3% having no prior convictions. The types of crimes punishable by transportation varied between England\, Scotland and Ireland. Theft predominated among the English and Scottish convicts\, whereas riot and sedition predominated among the Irish. While the English were more concerned with crimes protecting property and existing social order\, the Calvinistic Scots had severer sanctions for religious violations such as adultery\, immorality\, breaking the Sabbath and denial of the existence of God. DESCRIPTION:Both an in-depth and textured portrait of enigmatic Danish architect Jørn Utzon\, as well as the story of perhaps the 20th Centuries most ambitious architectural project\, this tour will be draw you in to the visionary world of the architect of Sydney Opera House. \nDiscussing the sources of Utzon’s deepest inspiration\, his working methods and influences\, we will chart the development of Utzon’s ideas and their materialisation in the platform\, concrete shells and ceramic skin of Sydney Opera House. You will discover the influence of towering 20th Century figures like Le Corbusier\, Alvar Aalto\, Eero Saarinen\, Mies van der Rohe\, Frank Lloyd Wright\, Antonio Gaudi and even Picasso on Utzon’s thinking and you will discover the ways in which his work was at once contemporary whilst drawing its inspiration from the work of the ancients. \nUtzon considered the six years he spent developing the interiors of the House the most productive of his career. None of this work was realised. The museum is housed in the original ‘Practice School’ for novices built in the 1900s. DESCRIPTION:To start our 2023 program of Monthly Activities\, we will be having a guided tour of the Jewish Museum by one of our own members who also volunteers at the Museum. \nThe Sydney Jewish Museum was established in 1992 by the generation of Holocaust survivors who came to Australia. They envisioned the Museum as a place which could hold their stories and personal objects\, memorialise those who were murdered during the Holocaust\, and within which the lessons from the past would be taught. \nThe Jewish Museum is a place that holds the voices of history\, and in which survivors still share their experiences with visitors. The Sydney Jewish Museum is an institution that gives history a voice through collecting and preserving historic objects\, commemorating and educating\, with a mission to challenge visitors’ perceptions of morality\, social justice\, democracy and human rights. \nThe Museum has welcomed multiple generations through their doors\, some as students who have returned later in life as adults. It is also the place where sharp oppositions are playing out between city and state\, memory and newness\, money and politics\, inspiration and pragmatism; opening up conversations big and small. \nOur route will be structured around several recent architectural projects. \nTour Details \nHistorically the centre of Sydney’s rag trade and home to one of the country’s largest breweries\, the transformation of Chippendale over the last decade has been nothing short of spectacular. This has architectural and urban dimensions of course\, but there have been concurrent cultural shifts in the world of art\, design\, landscape and gastronomy as well. How did this come about and what are the forces driving this change? Who are the key protagonists and what are the new ideas shaping this inspiring area? \nJoin us on this gritty architectural tour of Chippendale. Our route will be structured around a number of architectural\, art and urban interventions including projects by Pritzker-prize winning architects Norman Foster and Jean Nouvel. You will also discover transformative work by local heroes Durbach Block Jaggers\, William Smart\, John Wardle Architects\, Tonkin Zulaikha Greer\, Oculus and Aspect Studios. We will also sniff out one of Australia’s finest social housing schemes\, independent art galleries\, converted warehouses\, inspired laneway developments\, street art and discuss audacious plans to transform Central Station as we explore the suburbs underbelly. \nWe will end the tour at Central Park. Throughout the museum you will discover several exhibits about the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge\, the brave workers\, and interesting artefacts from the collection of Chief Engineer JJC Bradfield. \nThe displays throughout the museum examine why it took so long to realise a harbour bridge\, and consider the engineering challenges that a steel arch presented. \nSuspended from the ceiling you will find a model representing the day the arches joined (19 August 1930). The two half arches of the bridge are secured with a massive centre pin. DESCRIPTION:We will walk with our First Nations guide through the Royal Botanic Garden to learn more about Indigenous bush foods and how these foods were used traditionally and adapted to the modern plate and palate. On our one-hour tour\, we’ll journey through the Cadi Jam Ora garden and learn about some of the hottest bush foods on the market right now\, all while tasting some goodies yourself! The tour will involve pre-prepared tastings of finger lime\, wattle seed\, lilly pilly\, lemon myrtle and Davidson plum. \nPrior to this arranged tour\, we recommend a free add-on in the form of a visit to the Inside the Tide exhibit and some lunch at one of the Botanic Garden outlets. \nCombining the theatrical with horticulture\, Inside the Tide creates a surreal\, magical and playful display. Telling the stories of hero plants in three aquatic communities: Kelp Forests\, Coral Reefs and Seagrass Meadows\, wander through what feels like an under the sea experience and watch a pantomime come to life. Come face to face with giant sea creatures like the topiary blue whale\, a chandelier of jellyfish or blue ringed octopus with interactive elements both children and adults will enjoy. \nThis year’s display has also enlisted the help of hundreds of school children from across NSW\, who in 2021 created Codium seaweeds when undertaking educational workshops with the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney\, learning about the threats to coastal environments and how to best care for habitats. \nInside the Tide has over 20\,000 plants on display and is one of the largest living green walls in the Southern Hemisphere. SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - An Outing to North Head Quarantine Station\, Manly
DESCRIPTION:Located within a 30-hectare site on the North Head of Manly\, you will find a unique destination\, that is Q Station. An enduring part of Sydney’s history\, for 150 years the Quarantine Station was for many the beginning of a new life in Australia after making the arduous and lengthy journey from their homelands. Ships suspected of harbouring people infected with contagious diseases such as Spanish Influenza\, Smallpox or Bubonic Plague were quarantined here so that these deadly diseases would not reach the general population in Sydney. Ultimately a success story for the growing Sydney population\, it did however leave an indelible mark on those who were quarantined; tales of love and loss play out alongside themes of cultural and social change\, medical history and progress. \nThis will be a guided tour of 90 minutes. The ‘Quarantine Wander’ tour takes place predominantly in the flat area of the wharf precinct\, before climbing a short incline to the old hospital precinct. This tour visits the autoclaves\, inhalation chamber\, shower block and hospital ward\, and addresses the migrant arrival process and infectious disease treatment at the Quarantine Station in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. DESCRIPTION:Join SWIC for a guided tour of Unsettled at the newly refurbished Australian Museum. \nProduced by First Nations’ curators\, Unsettled provides visitors direct and undiluted access to the stories and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people during the time since European arrival. As a powerful instrument of truth-telling\, curators\, artists and community have had the opportunity to record evidence about past actions and share their culture\, heritage and history with Museum visitors. \nDATE: Thursday 23 September 2021 \nTIME: 10.00am – 11.00am \nDepending on government guidelines and numbers\, there may have to be two groups guided around the exhibition. The first group will depart at 10.00am and the second at 11.00am \nLIMIT of 30 MAX \nVENUE: The Australian Museum\, 1 William Street\, Sydney\, NSW 2010 \nEnter via the Groups Entrance\, at the top of the stairs on William Street (next to the bus drop-off bay).
