SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - Utzon and the Sydney Opera House Architectural Tour
DESCRIPTION:This month we are going to tour an architectural tour de force – the Sydney Opera House! \nOn 28 June 2007 the Sydney Opera House was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the World Heritage Convention\, placing it alongside the Taj Mahal\, the ancient Pyramids of Egypt and the Great Wall of China as one of the most outstanding places on Earth. \nThis tour\, led by architect Eoghan Lewis\, will draw you into the amazing visionary world of the architect of the Sydney Opera House through the eyes of its creator\, Danish architect Jørn Utzon. \nDiscussing the sources of the young architect’s deepest inspiration\, his working methods and influences\, we will discover the development of Utzon’s ideas and their materialisation in the Sydney Opera House. \nThe political events that led to his undoing in 1966 will be discussed and we will be able to see Utzon’s own drawings and models to unpack his intended but ultimately unrealised designs for the interiors. \nDATE: Thursday 26 May 2022 \nTIME: 10.00am-12.30pm \nLimit of 30 people MAX \nMEET: 9:45am for 10:00am start at the Sydney Botanic Gardens Gate\, near the eastern edge of the Sydney Opera House platform. \nCOST: $35.00 \nRSVP TO: swic.activitymonthly@gmail.com with your name and mobile phone number and wait for confirmation of a place before paying \nPAYMENT OPTIONS: \nPayment Option 1 (Preferred):\nBy Credit Card through the Payments section of the website \nPayment Option 2: Online (direct deposit) into the SWIC bank account \nAccount Name: SWIC Inc. \nBSB No: 112-879 \nAccount No: 431-019-281 \nDescription: Monthly Activity + your initial and surname \nWhat Else? \nPlease arrive at the meeting point 10-15 minutes prior to tour departure. Depending on numbers they will hand out a wireless audio system. \nWhatever happens with regard to the weather\, we will walk! Bring a sun hat\, umbrella\, camera\, sketch book and so on. \nThe Guide \nThe tour will be led by architect Eoghan Lewis\, founder of Eoghan Lewis Architects (www.eoghanlewis.com.au) and the Sydney Architecture Walks (SAW). Eoghan has been studying and sharing the work of Utzon with professional groups and the public for the last 21 years through SAW. \nAbout SAW \n‘We are architects and we conduct tours of Sydney on foot and on bicycle. Each tour is a straightforward and jargon-free story-telling journey that explores ideas through architecture\, offering an interface between in-depth architectural knowledge and the wider design-conscious community. We want you to understand the how and why of the city whilst we explore and unpack Sydney’s most provocative and daring projects; works of contemporary architecture\, public art and landscape that inspire and delight but also projects that reveal something of Sydney’s grimy pulse. All our tours are led by architects.’

SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - Bush Tucker Tour at the Royal Botanic Garden
DESCRIPTION:We will walk with our First Nations guide through the Royal Botanic Garden to learn more about Indigenous bush foods and how these foods were used traditionally and adapted to the modern plate and palate. On our one-hour tour\, we’ll journey through the Cadi Jam Ora garden and learn about some of the hottest bush foods on the market right now\, all while tasting some goodies yourself! The tour will involve pre-prepared tastings of finger lime\, wattle seed\, lilly pilly\, lemon myrtle and Davidson plum. \nPrior to this arranged tour\, we recommend a free add-on in the form of a visit to the Inside the Tide exhibit and some lunch at one of the Botanic Garden outlets. \nCombining the theatrical with horticulture\, Inside the Tide creates a surreal\, magical and playful display. Telling the stories of hero plants in three aquatic communities: Kelp Forests\, Coral Reefs and Seagrass Meadows\, wander through what feels like an under the sea experience and watch a pantomime come to life. Come face to face with giant sea creatures like the topiary blue whale\, a chandelier of jellyfish or blue ringed octopus with interactive elements both children and adults will enjoy. \nThis year’s display has also enlisted the help of hundreds of school children from across NSW\, who in 2021 created Codium seaweeds when undertaking educational workshops with the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney\, learning about the threats to coastal environments and how to best care for habitats. \nInside the Tide has over 20\,000 plants on display and is one of the largest living green walls in the Southern Hemisphere. Curated by the horticultural team at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and presented in partnership with Erth. \nMasks are currently mandatory at the Botanic Garden. \nDATE: Thursday 28 April 2022 \nTIME: 1.00pm- 3.30pm\nThe guided tour will commence at 2.30pm from the Garden Shop and run for one hour. \nWe will meet at 1.00pm for a free walk around the Inside the Tide exhibit and some lunch and be ready for our guide at 2.30pm. \nLimit of 25 people MAX \nVENUE: Royal Botanic Garden Sydney\, Mrs Macquarie’s Rd\, Sydney NSW 2000\n \nCOST: $27 \nRSVP TO: swic.activitymonthly@gmail.com with your name and mobile phone number and wait for confirmation of a place before paying \nPAYMENT OPTIONS: \nPayment Option 1 (Preferred):\nBy Credit Card through the Payments section of the website \nPayment Option 2: Online (direct deposit) into the SWIC bank account \nAccount Name: SWIC Inc. \nBSB No: 112-879 \nAccount No: 431-019-281 \nDescription: Monthly Activity + your initial and surname \nTRANSPORT: The Botanic Gardens are easily accessible from the CBD \nPlease check their website for information on parking. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - An Outing to North Head Quarantine Station\, Manly
DESCRIPTION:Located within a 30-hectare site on the North Head of Manly\, you will find a unique destination\, that is Q Station. An enduring part of Sydney’s history\, for 150 years the Quarantine Station was for many the beginning of a new life in Australia after making the arduous and lengthy journey from their homelands. Ships suspected of harbouring people infected with contagious diseases such as Spanish Influenza\, Smallpox or Bubonic Plague were quarantined here so that these deadly diseases would not reach the general population in Sydney. Ultimately a success story for the growing Sydney population\, it did however leave an indelible mark on those who were quarantined; tales of love and loss play out alongside themes of cultural and social change\, medical history and progress. \nThis will be a guided tour of 90 minutes. The ‘Quarantine Wander’ tour takes place predominantly in the flat area of the wharf precinct\, before climbing a short incline to the old hospital precinct. This tour visits the autoclaves\, inhalation chamber\, shower block and hospital ward\, and addresses the migrant arrival process and infectious disease treatment at the Quarantine Station in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Included will be a visit to the other buildings in this area such as the laundry and the morgue\, as well as the museum (previously the old luggage store). \nDATE: Thursday 24 March 2022 \nTIME: 11.30pm – 2.00pm (tour 12.30pm) \nLimit of 30 people MAX \nVENUE: Quarantine Station\, 1 North Head Scenic Drive\, Manly NSW Phone: 02 9466 1500 \nCOST: $24. \nI propose that we arrive earlier at 11.30am and meet at the Café on site which will be open on the day of our visit and which has a selection of sandwiches\, hot food such as sausage rolls and pies\, pastries\, muffins\, tea and coffee. We can also explore alone until the guide is ready. We have been asked to be there at least 15 minutes prior to the tour. \nGETTING THERE: There is a shuttle bus which can pick us up from the carpark if we convene there at 11.30am. I will be notifying the station that we would like the shuttle bus to take us from the car-park down to the site at 11.30am and then return us to the car-park after the tour. Alternatively\, it is a 15 minute walk. \nRSVP TO: swic.activitymonthly@gmail.com with your name and mobile phone number. Please wait for confirmation of a place before paying.\nCaren Trafford\, Monthly Activity Organiser \nPAYMENT OPTIONS:\nPayment Option 1 (Preferred): By Credit Card through the Payments section of the website\nPayment Option 2: Online (direct deposit) into the SWIC bank account \nAccount Name: SWIC Inc.\nBSB No: 112-879\nAccount No: 431-019-281\nDescription: Monthly Activity Q Station + your initial and surname \nGETTING THERE:\nFree parking is available at the entrance to the site.\nBy Car:\nArriving in Manly via Sydney Road\, turn right to Belgrave St. Turn left at Manly Wharf. Take the second left (signposted North Head)\, turn right onto Darley Road and up the hill past Manly Hospital. Go through the stone arch\, continue until you reach a roundabout and turn right into Q Station parking area.\nNote: A shuttle bus will be available at 11.30 am. Use of personal vehicles is not permitted on the property.\nBy Bus:\nWhen catching public transport\, take the 161 bus that operates between Manly and North Head.
