As Gough Whitlam delivers his iconic speech decrying his dismissal as Prime Minister\, a mighty crowd of reporters throngs the steps of Parliament House. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - ‘The Lifespan of a Fact’ (CANCELLED)
DESCRIPTION:Thrilling\, stylish\, and hyper-intelligent\, this hit Broadway comedy investigates the nature of truth in a post-truth era. \nBy David Murrell & Gordon Farrell and Jeremy Kareken\nDirected by Anne-Louise Sarks \nStarring Sigrid Thornton and Charles Wu \nPresented by arrangement with Music Theatre International (Australasia). \nFinding truth in the post-truth era \nIn her debut performance with the Sydney Theatre Company\, Australian legend Sigrid Thornton will lead this thrilling\, stylish and hyper-intelligent hit Broadway comedy that tackles the great question of our time: true or false? \nJim has finally made it – an internship at a prestigious magazine and a once-in-a-lifetime assignment: the chance to fact check a new essay by a writer he idolises. \nBut as he methodically begins his task\, holding each detail up to the light\, he discovers that separating fact from fiction is not such an easy job. Performed by Charles Wu (The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui)\, Jim’s dogged pursuit of the facts is pitted against the titanic ego of the essay’s author. Thornton plays the shrewd\, sharp-tongued editor who manoeuvres the combatants while pushing the article through to print. \nFor fans of The Newsroom and The West Wing\, The Lifespan of a Fact is a timely investigation of the old truism “never let the truth get in the way of a good story.” Directed by Anne-Louise Sarks (Avalanche)\, this high-octane production questions how\, in our age of fake news and big data\, we’ll ever get to a world that’s post-post-truth. \nApprox. duration 1hr 35mins (no interval)\nContent Infrequent strong language\, suicide themes \nDATE: Tuesday 19 October 2021 \nTIME: 6.30pm – 8.00pm \nVENUE: Drama Theatre\, Sydney Opera House \nTICKETS: Adult A Reserve $86; Seniors Cardholder $81 + Booking Fee. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - 'A Raisin in the Sun' (CANCELLED)
DESCRIPTION:An iconic work of American theatre\, a testament to the power of family\, and a hymn to the Black experience. \nBy Lorraine Hansberry\nDirected by Shari Sebbens (the new Resident Director) \nLorraine Hansberry wrote A Raisin in the Sun when she was just 29 years-old and the play swiftly became a mainstay of the modern theatre canon. When it premiered in 1959\, the play was the first by an African American woman to be shown on Broadway and it continues to challenge and move audiences generations later. \nLiving in Chicago during the 1950s and optimistic about rising above the injustices that have shaped their lives\, the five members of the Younger family are all looking for ways to improve their lot: some through activism\, some through fortune\, and some through simple acts of self-determination. The arrival of a change of circumstance – in the form of a life insurance cheque – gives the close-knit family a chance to consider the possibility of a better life. But the distance between dreams and reality proves further than any of them anticipated. \nThis production\, by the Sydney Theatre Company\, marks the first time ever that A Raisin in the Sun will be performed on an Australian mainstage. It stars Zahra Newman and Bert La Bonté. \nApprox. duration – 2hrs 40mins (including interval)\nContent – Infrequent strong language \nDATE: Tuesday 5 October 2021 \nTIME: 6.30pm (pre-theatre 5.30pm) \nVENUE: Wharf 1 Theatre\, Wharf 4/5\, 15 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay\, Sydney NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: Adult A Reserve $86; Seniors Cardholder $81 + Booking Fee. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - 'A Chorus Line' (CANCELLED)
DESCRIPTION:“Blood\, sweat and tears don’t date\,” says director and choreographer Amy Campbell\, who will be bringing to life at Darlinghurst Theatre Company\, a thrilling reimagining of one of the most iconic dance spectacles of our time – A Chorus Line. \nThis iconic dance musical was ground-breaking when it premiered in 1975. It will be the first time that a professional Australian production of the show features entirely new choreography. Campbell has rethought the piece to reflect the dance-styles and life of the artist in the 21st Century. \nSet on the bare stage of a Broadway theatre\, A Chorus Line centres on 17 dancers who are desperately auditioning for eight chorus roles in a musical. The show unfolds through a series of vignettes\, giving us a glimpse into the personalities of the people auditioning\, revealing the life experiences that propelled them to become dancers\, along with their hopes\, fears\, insecurities and frustrations. The show famously ends with an epic kick line as they don glitzy costumes\, having previously worn rehearsal gear. \nDATE: Wednesday 15 September 2021 \nTIME: 7.30pm \nVENUE: Eternity Playhouse\, 39 Burton St\, Darlinghurst NSW 2010 \nTICKETS: A Reserve $72 – $88; B Reserve ($65 – $79) + Booking Fee. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' (CANCELLED)
DESCRIPTION:By Oscar Wilde \nAdapted and directed by Kip Williams \nDon’t miss the return season of this smash hit\, in which Sydney Theatre Company gives this classic story a Wilde twist. \nOscar Wilde’s century-old moral fable\, packed with witticisms\, is as devilishly wicked today as on its debut. \nSeeing himself in a dazzling new portrait\, an exquisite young man makes a Faustian wish for eternal youth. Dorian Gray throws himself into a life of wanton luxury\, drifting from the pampered salons of Victorian London to the darkest recesses of the capital\, and revelling in the splendour of his beauty which remains forever golden. Meanwhile\, the portrait – banished to an attic – becomes more and more grotesque. \nThis interpretation of Wilde’s only novel is adapted and directed by Artistic Director Kip Williams. Collaborating once again with Eryn Jean Norvill (Suddenly Last Summer\, Romeo and Juliet)\, Williams’ re-imagining will see Norvill performing every role in the story in an audacious cascade of theatrical transformations. The inventive use of live video that made Suddenly Last Summer and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui so visually compelling will capture and amplify every move. \n“The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it.”  Lord Henry \nContent – Adult themes\, drug use \nDATE: Friday 20 August 2021 \nTIME: 7.30pm (approx. duration 2 hours\, no interval) \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nSEASON TICKET PRICES: Adult A Reserve $86\, Seniors cardholder $81 + Booking Fee \nCo-Convenors Judith and Cherry have purchased their tickets for Seats A20 and 21. \nTo buy your tickets visit www.sydneytheatrecompany.com \nPRE-THEATRE DINNER (Optional): There will also be the option to join Judith and Cherry for a pre-theatre dinner at Walsh Bay Kitchen\, which adjoins the theatre\, at 6.00pm. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - "The Cherry Orchard"
DESCRIPTION:A homecoming. A picnic. A party. A leavetaking.\n\nIt’s an uncertain time. Change is coming\, you can sniff it in the air. \nA family returns to a home that’s seen better days – but it still has its orchard. Precious\, beautiful\, but…in the way. \nChekhov’s great\, last play needs no embellishment to describe our times. What orchards are we cutting down? What orchards are we planting? \nPamela Rabe leads a large cast from today’s Australia\, in a classic as funny as it is profound. This promises to be one of the highlights of 2021. \nI’ve wanted to do this for years. With a richly talented gang of actors and after the year we’ve all lived through…it’s time for this beautiful\, celebratory\, moving play. – Eamon Flack \nSupported by the Chair’s Circle. \n DATE: Thursday 3 June 2021 \nTIME: 7.30pm \nVENUE: Upstairs Theatre\, Belvoir St Theatre\, 25 Belvoir Street\, Surry Hills NSW 2010 \nTICKETS: Adults: (Left/Right Bank) $78; Seniors: (Left/Right Bank) $68 + Booking Fee. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - "A Room of One's Own"
DESCRIPTION:Written by Virginia Woolf \nAdapted for the Stage by Carissa Licciardello & Tom Wright \nDirected by Carissa Licciardello \nWhat started as a lecture to a roomful of students became an essay\, became a book\, became a seismic wave. Virginia Woolf’s 1929 classic description of the need for new spaces and a complete redefinition of who owns our story making is by turns wise\, amusing\, incendiary and poetic. Rippling with passion\, this is one of the finest pieces of writing in the last hundred years\, with the distinct talents of Anita Hegh walking Woolf’s tightrope of thought and feeling. \nA teacher once told me work by and about women is usually only small and domestic\, never bold or formally radical. He’d obviously never read this (or seen our production). – Carissa Licciardello \nSupported by The Group \nDATE: Wednesday 19 May 2021 \nTIME: 7.30pm \nVENUE: Upstairs Theatre\, Belvoir St Theatre\, 25 Belvoir Street\, Surry Hills NSW 2010 \nTICKETS: Adults: (Centre) $83\, (Left/Right) $78; Seniors: (Centre) $73\, (Left/Right) $68 + Booking Fee. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - "Is There Something Wrong With That Lady?" - by Debra Oswald
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Lee Lewis with Debra Oswald \nAs a lapsed playwright\, creator of the Offspring TV series\, former Junior Champion Hypochondriac\, and a floundering novelist\, what should Debra Oswald‘s next move be? And what motivates people to write or create more ‘stuff’ anyway? Shame? Fear of death? The hope of more sexual offers? \nFor now\, Debra plans to seize control of the Griffin stage: the exact location she fell in love with theatre\, aged 11\, and the place her plays Mr Bailey’s Minder and The Peach Season came to life. \nIn a funny and excruciatingly honest one-woman show\, Debra tells stories about her neurotic childhood\, clumsy romantic history\, and the anxieties and joys of the writer’s life – all in the hope that the audience can help her work out that ever-important question: what comes next? And having waited for this show to be staged since its original 2020 season… it’s kind of urgent. \nDATE: Thursday\, 22 April 2021 \nTIME: 7.00pm (6.00pm for pre-performance drinks) \nVENUE: SBW Stables (Griffin Theatre Company)\, 10 Nimrod Street\, Kings Cross\, NSW 2011 \nTICKETS: $40 \nWe have bought tickets for Seats 43 and 44. \nTo purchase your ticket go to boxoffice@griffintheatre.com.au or phone (02) 9361 3817\n10.00am – 6.00pm weekdays.
