SUMMARY:Theatre Group - 'Jump for Jordan' (CANCELLED)
DESCRIPTION:A heart-warming comedy about the highs and lows of family life. \nSophie is an aspiring archaeologist\, who left home when she was 20\, but not without protest from her Australian-Jordanian family. \nWith an awkward family reunion looming\, Sophie is petrified of judgement from her ‘mad’ Aunty Azza and is forced to bury the truth about her life\, including her career and her Aussie girlfriend\, Sam. But\, worst of all\, is the fear that she’s also been lying to herself. \nLooking deep into the heart of Sydney and beyond\, Jump for Jordan unpacks the experience common to countless second-generation Australians of being caught between two cultures. Sifting through shifting layers of past and present\, farce and fantasy\, it’s one woman’s mad\, messy excavation of her own history\, and her attempt to piece together the broken bits of her identity. Donna Abela’s Jump for Jordan took out the Griffin Award in 2013\, wowing the judges with its vitality and ambition. This production is directed by Griffin Studio director Iain Sinclair. \nThe development of Jump for Jordan has been supported by Playwriting Australia\, the University of Wollongong\, and the Department of Performance Studies at the University of Sydney. \nDATE: Thursday 14 May 2020 \nTIME: 7.30pm \nVENUE: Eternity Playhouse\, 39 Burton St\, Darlinghurst NSW 2010 \nTICKETS: Standard: $62\, Senior: $59 + $5 Booking Fee. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - 'A Room of One's Own' (CANCELLED)
DESCRIPTION:Written by Virginia Woolf \nAdapted for the Stage by Carissa Licciardello & Tom Wright \nDirected by Carissa Licciardello \nWhat started as a lecture to a roomful of students became an essay\, became a book\, became a seismic wave. Virginia Woolf’s 1929 classic description of the need for new spaces and a complete redefinition of who owns our story making is by turns wise\, amusing\, incendiary and poetic. Rippling with passion\, this is one of the finest pieces of writing in the last hundred years\, with the distinct talents of Anita Hegh walking Woolf’s tightrope of thought and feeling. \nA teacher once told me work by and about women is usually only small and domestic\, never bold or formally radical. He’d obviously never read this (or seen our production). – Carissa Licciardello \nSupported by The Group \nDATE: Thursday 30 April 2020 \nTIME: 7.30pm \nVENUE: Upstairs Theatre\, Belvoir St Theatre\, 25 Belvoir Street\, Surry Hills NSW 2010 \nTICKETS: Adults: (Centre) $83\, (Left/Right) $78; Seniors: (Centre) $73\, (Left/Right) $68 + Booking Fee. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - 'A Chorus Line' (CANCELLED)
DESCRIPTION:Darlinghurst Theatre Company in Sydney opens its 2020 season with a new\, re-imagined production of A Chorus Line. It will be the first time that a professional Australian production of the show features entirely new choreography. \nSet on the bare stage of a Broadway theatre\, A Chorus Line centres on 17 dancers who are desperately auditioning for eight chorus roles in a musical. The show unfolds through a series of vignettes\, giving us a glimpse into the personalities of the people auditioning\, revealing the life experiences that propelled them to become dancers\, along with their hopes\, fears\, insecurities and frustrations. The show famously ends with an epic kick line as they don glitzy costumes\, having previously worn rehearsal gear. \nDATE: Wednesday 25 March 2020 \nTIME: 7.30pm \nVENUE: Eternity Playhouse\, 39 Burton St\, Darlinghurst NSW 2010 \nTICKETS: Standard B Reserve: $78\, Senior B Reserve: $70\, Concession: $60 (Proof of concession required at Box Office) + $5 Booking Fee. \nWe have bought B Reserve Senior tickets\, D20 and D21. \nPurchase your tickets at https://www.darlinghursttheatre.com/buy-tickets or call 8356 9987 \nPRE-THEATRE DINNER (Optional Extra): 6.00pm\, Two Trout Restaurant\, Darlinghurst Theatre Company (onsite) OR you may prefer to just buy a drink at the bar \nRSVP TO: Judith Nguyen at nguyenjm@bigpond.net.au\, indicating whether you would like to join us for the pre-theatre dinner\, as booking is required \nRSVP BY: Wednesday 18 March 2020 \n                           ************************************************* \nTHEATRE GROUP – Looking Ahead in 2020 \nTo enable you to plan your diary for 2020\, below are the dates and selected plays for Theatre Group from April till November. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - 'Packer & Sons' by Tommy Murphy
DESCRIPTION:This month we will be seeing Tommy Murphy’s production of Packer & Sons\, directed by Eamon Flack\, at Belvoir St Theatre. \nIn brief – a battler at a Tasmanian racecourse finds ten shillings in the dirt. He puts it on a 12-1 long shot\, and when it romps home he’s off to the mainland\, and the Packer Dynasty is born. Fathers and sons across generations\, through war\, the Depression\, technological change. The family myth grows with the influence\, and each son feels the weight of time\, of power. But now it’s the 21st century. Newspapers\, magazines\, broadcast TV – what are they? Now it’s time for entertainment through your phone. And back to laying bets on long shots. \nA deeply researched\, muscular work from Tommy Murphy\, Packer & Sons puts on stage the men who have loomed large over Sydney for nearly 100 years. Plotted around the transitions of power from father to son over four generations\, this is a play about power and what it does to the men who wield it. \nSupported by Australian Writers’ Guild’s David Williamson Prize \nDATE: Thursday 28 November 2019 \nTIME: 7.30pm – 10.00pm \nVENUE: Upstairs Theatre\, Belvoir St Theatre\, 25 Belvoir Street\, Surry Hills NSW 2010 \nTICKETS: Adults $75-80\, Seniors $65-70 \nWe have purchased our Senior tickets (weekday side) for $65 each in Row E. \nPurchase your tickets at belvoir.com.au or ring the box office on 9699 3444. \n(NOTE: Transaction fees may apply) \nPRE-PERFORMANCE (Optional): You are welcome to join Theatre Group Convenors Judith Nguyen and Liz Polednik at Belvoir St Theatre prior to the performance\, where you can buy snacks and drinks at the bar. \nRSVP TO: Judith Nguyen at nguyenjm@bigpond.net.au by Thursday 21 November 2019 \n************************************************* \nTHEATRE GROUP – Last play for the year \n Wednesday 11 December – The Odd Couple by Neil Simon (Ensemble)

SUMMARY:Theatre Group - "The Real Thing" by Tom Stoppard
DESCRIPTION:This month we will be seeing Sydney Theatre Company’s production of The Real Thing. \nSimon Phillips returns to direct an irresistible cast in this hugely entertaining and deeply affecting modern classic about the search for love. \nThe Real Thing is playwright Tom Stoppard at his dazzling best. One of his most heartfelt plays\, it’s a portrait of a writer of intellectual prowess struggling to articulate that most elusive of emotions – love. \nHenry is married to Charlotte\, while Annie is married to Max. But it’s Henry and Annie who have fallen passionately in love. Could this\, at last\, be the real thing? They’ll soon find out. \nThrough the demise of two marriages\, the bloom of new relationships\, and the pain of infidelity\, Stoppard’s characters debate and dissect what love is\, what it gives and what it takes. Expertly constructed\, erudite and funny\, The Real Thing is a modern classic. \nSimon Phillips returns to direct an irresistible cast including Geraldine Hakewill (Chimerica) and Johnny Carr in this hugely entertaining and deeply affecting play. \nProduction Patron – The Petre Foundation \nContent warning – Strong language\, adult themes\, sexual references \nDATE: Wednesday 9 October 2019 \nTIME: 8.00pm (approx. duration 2hrs 20 mins\, including interval) \nVENUE: Drama Theatre\, Sydney Opera House \nTICKETS: Adult $103; Seniors $93; Concession $82; Under 30 $75\nWe have purchased our A Reserve Senior Concession tickets for $93 each. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - William Golding’s "Lord of the Flies"
DESCRIPTION:This month’s Theatre Group takes on a more serious note – Maybe there is a beast. Maybe it’s just us. \nWhen a plane crash leaves a group of schoolboys marooned on a desert island\, it isn’t long before they descend into rivalries\, chaos and violence. \nArtistic Director Kip Williams’ staging makes us look at Lord of the Flies with new eyes. An exciting ensemble of adult actors\, including Australian screen star Mia Wasikowska (Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland) will bring Golding’s island of boys to life\, showing how quickly small cruelties can escalate. More than just pig’s blood will be spilled. \nWilliam Golding’s Lord of the Flies is a 20th century masterpiece\, as relevant today as it was on its publication in 1954. In it\, Golding created an enduring modern myth\, examining humanity’s terrifying capacity for self-destruction. \nDon’t miss this powerful and thrilling retelling of a classic. \nAdapted for the stage by Nigel Williams\nDirected by Kip Williams \nContent warning – Adult themes\, violence\, strong language\, theatrical blood\, haze\, strobe lighting and complete theatrical blackouts. \nDATE: Tuesday 6 August 2019 \nTIME: 6.30pm – 1hr 45 mins (no interval) \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: We have purchased our tickets for $99 each with senior concession. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - "Prima Facie" at the Griffin Theatre
DESCRIPTION:For this month’s Theatre Group we will see the Australian Premiere of Prima Facie by Suzy Miller\, a one-woman show starring Sheridan Harbridge as Tessa – a criminal lawyer at the top of her game. \nWinner of the 2018 Griffin Award\, Prima Facie is an indictment of the Australian legal system’s failure to provide reliable pathways to justice for women in rape\, sexual assault or harassment cases. It’s a work of fiction\, but one that could have been ripped from the headlines of any paper\, any day of the week\, so common you could cry. \nSheridan Harbridge is one of Sydney’s most beloved and versatile performers. She last appeared on the Griffin stage in David Finnigan’s audacious political comedy Kill Climate Deniers\, which wowed and shocked audiences and critics alike. \nTurning Sydney’s courts of law into a different kind of stage\, Suzie Miller’s (Sunset Strip\, Caress/Ache) taut\, rapid-fire and gripping one-woman show exposes the shortcomings of a patriarchal justice system where it’s her word against his. \nDATE: Thursday 18 June 2019 \nTIME: 7.00pm \nVENUE: Griffin Theatre Company\, 10 Nimrod Street\, Kings Cross\, NSW 2011 \nTICKETS: Tickets are $62 Full and $52 Concession. SUMMARY:Theatre Group – 'Folk' at the Ensemble Theatre
DESCRIPTION:This month Theatre Group is going a little more light-hearted\, with the Australian Premiere of Tom Wells’ funny and moving play\, Folk\, which brings together a classic trio of misfits with heart\, humour and song. \nSister Winnie is no ordinary nun. She’s feisty\, irreverent and has a soft spot for a pint of Guinness. Her front room is a haven for socially awkward Stephen\, who shares her passion for folk music. Their world is suddenly shattered – literally – when wayward and rebellious Kayleigh throws a brick through the window\, bringing chaos into their lives. Each of them is keeping a secret and as confidences are shared\, ever-optimistic Winnie concocts a harebrained scheme to help her friends unleash their creative talent on the world. \nThe play features Libby Asciak\, Gerard Carroll and Genevieve Lemon. \n★★★★ “Tom Wells writes plays of great heart… Folk\, is no different. It’s as warm as an electric blanket on a nippy night… a play of empathy\, generosity and hope. Poignant but not sentimental… it’s a celebration of the different forms that love can take.” The Stage UK \nDATE: Thursday 16 May 2019 \nTIME: 8.15 pm (approximately 90 minutes\, no interval) \nVENUE: Ensemble Theatre\, 78 McDougall St\, Kirribilli\, NSW 2061 \nTICKETS: Tickets are $75 for seniors and $78 for adults. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - "The Miser"
DESCRIPTION:First performed in 1668\, The Miser is the well-known satire by French playwright Molière\, known for other classics such as Tartuffe and The Misanthrope. \nIn this performance\, starring John Bell\, the Founder of Bell Shakespeare\, The Miser is directed by Peter Evans and is based on a new contemporary version of Molière’s play written by Justin Fleming. \nIt is a play about family dynamics and greed. It is about the power of money – and those who are seduced by it. In the world of The Miser\, passion and penny-pinching go head to head in a ribald comedy of manners. Wealthy skinflint\, Harpagon is so cheap he’d rather bury his money in the backyard and steal oats from his horse before seeing a dollar spent. This is a man who loves nothing more than his beloved cash – not even his own children. As Peter Evans says\, “This is a delightful farce about a tight-arse lacking in class.” \nDATE: Tuesday 2 April 2019 \nTIME: 6.30pm. The show runs for approximately 2 hours 35 minutes\, with one interval \nVENUE: The Playhouse\, Sydney Opera House \nTICKETS: Back row tickets – $55\, middle row – $75\, front row – $95 + booking fee. We have purchased back row tickets and most are still available. \nTo buy your tickets visit https://www.sydneyoperahouse.com/events/whats-on/bell-shakespeare/2019/the-miser-tickets.html or call the Box Office on 1300 305 730. \nPRE-THEATRE DINNER: There will also be the option to join us for a pre-theatre dinner at ‘Portside’\, which is on the same site as the theatre\, at 5.00pm. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - "Mary Stuart"
DESCRIPTION:For the first two productions of the year we (Judith and Liz) have something of a theme going on.  We saw Kate Mulvany as Richard III a couple of years ago and her performance was so impressive we decided to ‘follow’ her. \nSo our first offering is her gripping adaptation of Schiller’s Mary Stuart for the Sydney Theatre Company. An empire is at stake and a queen’s life hangs in the balance. This is one of history’s great rivalries. Two powerful women of very different natures – Mary\, Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I of England – cousins but not friends. The play stars two of Australia’s best known actors\, Caroline Brazier (Dinner\, Rake) as Mary\, and Helen Thomson (The Harp in the South) as Elizabeth. \nDATE: Wednesday 20 February 2019 \nTIME: 7.30pm – 9.10pm (no interval) \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: We have purchased our A Reserve tickets for $93 each with senior concession. We will book the table when we know the numbers. \nRSVP TO: Judith Nguyen at nguyenjm@bigpond.net.au by 15 February 2019 \n \n************************************************* \nTHEATRE GROUP IN MARCH – Every Brilliant Thing \nIn March you can see Kate Mulvany\, the actor\, in a one woman play called Every Brilliant Thing by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe. \n“One of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression – and possibly one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see\, full stop”.
