SUMMARY:Art & Culture - Guided Tour of Yiribana Gallery
DESCRIPTION:For those of you who attended our Art & Culture event in December\, ‘Discover the Art and Architecture of the new Sydney Modern’\, and for those members who have already explored the new building\, we have organised an additional guided tour on Tuesday 21 February 2023. The newly relocated Yiribana Gallery is the first gallery that visitors encounter in the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ new North Building. The inaugural display is inspired by a word from the Aboriginal language of Sydney: burbangana. Meaning to ’take hold of my hand and help me up’\, burbangana is akin to an invitation. It is imbued with generosity and care. It emphasises the connections between people. \nThe exhibited works touch on moments of burbangana in differing ways. Some consider notions of care and guidance through familial relationships. Others offer philosophies for living and profile the intricacies of cultural inheritance\, or they examine ongoing complexities of history and resilience. \nSeveral new acquisitions are displayed alongside collection highlights – including works by Richard Bell\, Emily Kame Kngwarreye\, Reko Rennie\, Yhonnie Scarce and Rover Thomas – showcasing the diversity of practice across the country\, and across time\, media and art styles. \nLorraine Connelly-Northey’s major commission Narrbong-galang (many bags)\, made from rusted and salvaged metals\, is prominently displayed in the 20-metre-long Yiribana window\, which is visible to the public both night and day. \nYiribana means ’this way’ in the Sydney language and was the name given to the Art Gallery’s dedicated space for the display of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art when it opened in November 1994. Yiribana has a rich legacy of highlighting the depth and dynamism of art practice across Indigenous Australia. \nDATE: Tuesday 21 February 2023 \nTIME: 9.30am -11.00am (approximately) \nVENUE: Art Gallery of NSW\, on Gadigal Country – North Building  Art Gallery Road The Domain\, Sydney NSW 2000. \nMEETING PLACE: The Welcome Hub in the Plaza of the new building. After cloaking at the desk outside the Gallery\, one of the Welcome Hosts will escort our group inside where we will be fitted with headsets and head off with our guide. The tour will last for approximately 1 to 1.25 hours. You are then free to explore other exhibitions at leisure. \nCOST: $32.00 \nRSVP TO:   Kay Nicholas Email: swic.artandculture@gmail.com with your name and mobile phone number. \nRSVP BY: 10 February 2023. Described as ‘wildly different’\, this is an extraordinary exhibition revealing three centuries of folklore and fantasy in Japanese art. SUMMARY:Art & Culture - Private Tour of the Rose Seidler House (WAIT LIST)
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join Art & Culture for an exclusive SWIC-only tour of the Rose Seidler House on Tuesday 15 October 2019. Our hosts will be Sydney Living Museums. \nThe Rose Seidler House\, now a museum managed by Sydney Living Museums\, is one of the finest examples of mid-20th Century modern domestic architecture in Australia.  Built by Harry Seidler for his parents in 1948-1950\, the radical design of this influential house integrated architecture\, art and technology in a bold and optimistic vision for a new way of living. The house in its garden setting is an authentic representation of Harry’s early vision for Australian architecture. The furniture and interiors also form one of Australia’s most important mid-century collections of domestic design. Today it is still surrounded by bushland with panoramic views of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park\, and its furniture and fittings form one of the most complete and intact post-World War II design collections in public ownership. The house\, contents and grounds have all been carefully restored to their original ’50s glory. \nPlease note that because of the fragility of the furnishings and the historic nature of the property our numbers are strictly limited. We have therefore arranged TWO TOURS\, BACK-TO-BACK. \nTour 1: 10.30am  Tour 2: 11.30am \nPlease: \n\nRSVP early\nRSVP before payment to ascertain availability\nAfter advice from the organiser of availability on the tour kindly pay in order to confirm your place\n\nNote: SWIC will prepay this event so there will be no refunds after the close-by date of 28 September 2019. \nSydney Living Museums advise the following: \n\nMobility – The house is not accessible by wheelchair and while people with limited mobility can access the site\, there is a set of stairs (about 15) that leads to the main floor of the house. There is no opportunity to sit down within the house as much of the furniture is original and fragile. The grounds and carpark are quite rough terrain.\nBags\, food and drink are not permitted in the house\nMobile phones must be turned off during the program\nWet weather – tours will go ahead in all weather conditions so please come prepared\nWear your best socks! SUMMARY:Art & Culture - Brett Whiteley: drawing is everything
DESCRIPTION:This February the Art Gallery of New South Wales presents Brett Whiteley: drawing is everything\, the first major museum exhibition to focus on the central place of drawing in Whiteley’s work. Key paintings and sculptures are also showcased\, underpinning the importance of drawing to Whiteley’s broader artistic practice. The drawings in this exhibition have rarely been seen. They range from Whiteley’s early images of Sydney and Europe and his great abstracts that brought him international fame in the 1960s\, to the lyrical landscapes\, portraits\, interiors and nudes that established him as one of the most prominent and well-loved Australian artists of the 20th century. \nArt Gallery of NSW director\, Dr Michael Brand\, has said “The exhibition celebrates Whiteley’s creative energy and masterful command of the drawn line. Drawing lay at the heart of Brett Whiteley’s artistic endeavours; whether the final expression was a work on paper\, a painting\, a sculpture or printmaking\, the seed was drawing.” \nJoin SWIC on a private guided tour of the exhibition. \nDATE: Tuesday 19 February 2019 \nTIME: Meet outside the main entrance of the Art Gallery no later than 9.20 am for a 9.30 am tour \nVENUE: Art Gallery of NSW\, Art Gallery Road\, The Domain\, Sydney NSW 2000 \nThe NSW Art Gallery is located  the eastern side of Sydney’s CBD\, next to the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Domain\, just down the road from St Mary’s Cathedral. \nCOST:   Adult $25.00 or $20 for NSW Seniors Card Holders \nPAYMENT OPTIONS:  Payable on the day.
