SUMMARY:Art & Culture - Private Tour of the Rose Seidler House (WAIT LIST)
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join Art & Culture for an exclusive SWIC-only tour of the Rose Seidler House on Tuesday 15 October 2019. Our hosts will be Sydney Living Museums. \nThe Rose Seidler House\, now a museum managed by Sydney Living Museums\, is one of the finest examples of mid-20th Century modern domestic architecture in Australia.  Built by Harry Seidler for his parents in 1948-1950\, the radical design of this influential house integrated architecture\, art and technology in a bold and optimistic vision for a new way of living. The house in its garden setting is an authentic representation of Harry’s early vision for Australian architecture. The furniture and interiors also form one of Australia’s most important mid-century collections of domestic design. Today it is still surrounded by bushland with panoramic views of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park\, and its furniture and fittings form one of the most complete and intact post-World War II design collections in public ownership. The house\, contents and grounds have all been carefully restored to their original ’50s glory. \nPlease note that because of the fragility of the furnishings and the historic nature of the property our numbers are strictly limited. We have therefore arranged TWO TOURS\, BACK-TO-BACK. \nTour 1: 10.30am  Tour 2: 11.30am \nPlease: \n\nRSVP early\nRSVP before payment to ascertain availability\nAfter advice from the organiser of availability on the tour kindly pay in order to confirm your place\n\nNote: SWIC will prepay this event so there will be no refunds after the close-by date of 28 September 2019. \nSydney Living Museums advise the following: \n\nMobility – The house is not accessible by wheelchair and while people with limited mobility can access the site\, there is a set of stairs (about 15) that leads to the main floor of the house. There is no opportunity to sit down within the house as much of the furniture is original and fragile. The grounds and carpark are quite rough terrain.\nBags\, food and drink are not permitted in the house\nMobile phones must be turned off during the program\nWet weather – tours will go ahead in all weather conditions so please come prepared\nWear your best socks! SUMMARY:Art & Culture - Brett Whiteley: drawing is everything
DESCRIPTION:This February the Art Gallery of New South Wales presents Brett Whiteley: drawing is everything\, the first major museum exhibition to focus on the central place of drawing in Whiteley’s work. Key paintings and sculptures are also showcased\, underpinning the importance of drawing to Whiteley’s broader artistic practice. The drawings in this exhibition have rarely been seen. They range from Whiteley’s early images of Sydney and Europe and his great abstracts that brought him international fame in the 1960s\, to the lyrical landscapes\, portraits\, interiors and nudes that established him as one of the most prominent and well-loved Australian artists of the 20th century. \nArt Gallery of NSW director\, Dr Michael Brand\, has said “The exhibition celebrates Whiteley’s creative energy and masterful command of the drawn line. Drawing lay at the heart of Brett Whiteley’s artistic endeavours; whether the final expression was a work on paper\, a painting\, a sculpture or printmaking\, the seed was drawing.” \nJoin SWIC on a private guided tour of the exhibition. \nDATE: Tuesday 19 February 2019 \nTIME: Meet outside the main entrance of the Art Gallery no later than 9.20 am for a 9.30 am tour \nVENUE: Art Gallery of NSW\, Art Gallery Road\, The Domain\, Sydney NSW 2000 \nThe NSW Art Gallery is located  the eastern side of Sydney’s CBD\, next to the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Domain\, just down the road from St Mary’s Cathedral. \nCOST:   Adult $25.00 or $20 for NSW Seniors Card Holders \nPAYMENT OPTIONS:  Payable on the day. SUMMARY:Art & Culture - Visit to the Allens Collection (WAIT LIST)
DESCRIPTION:As our final event for 2018 we are excited to offer our Art & Culture enthusiasts the opportunity to visit The Allens Collection. \nThe works in the Allens’ Collection illustrate that the ‘art of painting and aesthetic concerns are still fundamental to artistic expression’. The Collection dates from the mid 1970s\, when Allens Law Firm moved into the offices of the then new MLC Building. What began as a way of ‘enlivening the office environment’ has grown to become a significant survey of painting over the following decades. The collection now has over a thousand works hanging in their offices. Not only do the art works create a vibrant work place but they also demonstrate an enduring commitment to young emerging Australian artists.  Allens have sought to collect a range of unique and challenging artworks from Australian artists. \nWe encourage you to RSVP early as places are limited. \nMaria Poulos\, the Curator of the Allens Collection\, will be our guide. We extend our sincere thanks to Allens and to Maria for their hospitality. \nDATE: Tuesday 20 November 2018 \nTIME: 11.00am – 12.30pm approximately. Light refreshments will be served during the event \nMeeting place: To be advised \nVENUE: Deutsche Bank Place – Level 28 126 Phillip Street (Corner Hunter & Phillip Streets) Sydney CBD \nCOST: $25.00 to a charity nominated by Allens \nPAYMENT OPTIONS: Pay on the day. SUMMARY:Art & Culture - Private Tour of 'The Lady and the Unicorn' Tapestries
DESCRIPTION:Art & Culture commences 2018 with a rare opportunity for our members to experience the beauty\, scale and intricacy of ‘The Lady and the Unicorn’ Tapestry Series. \nOn loan from the Musée de Cluny\, this tapestry series is a masterpiece of Medieval French Art that has captivated viewers across the centuries. \nRevered as a national treasure in France\, and known as the 15th-century ‘Mona Lisa of the Middle Ages’ The Lady and the Unicorn tapestry cycle will be making its exclusive appearance in Australia at the Art Gallery of NSW through a generous and exceptional loan from the collection of the Musée de Cluny – Musée National du Moyen Âge in Paris. \nThe six large tapestries each depict a richly costumed lady flanked by that most mysterious animal\, the unicorn\, with jewel-like millefleur (‘thousand flowers’) backgrounds. The tapestries present a vivid meditation on earthly pleasures and courtly love. They can also be viewed as an allegory of the five senses – sight\, hearing\, taste\, touch and smell – plus a sixth ‘internal’ sense – heart\, desire or will – which was widely known at the time. \nA visit to The Lady and the Unicorn will allow a close encounter with one of the world’s greatest treasures. \nDATE: Tuesday 20 February 2018 \nVENUE: Art Gallery of NSW\, Art Gallery Road\, The Domain\, Sydney NSW 2000 \nTIME: Meet in the foyer of the Art Gallery no later than 9.15am for a 9.30am tour. \nCOST: $25 Payable on the Day \nRSVP TO: Kay Nicholas at kay.k.nicholas@gmail.com or 0438469044 \nRSVP BY: 9 February 2018 \nPlease note that registration for this tour by 9 February 2018 is essential as our numbers determine the number of guides that are required. SUMMARY:'Remembering Pirates' - a SWIC Friends & Partners Evening at the Eternity Theatre
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]SWIC has booked 30 tickets at the Darlinghurst Theatre Company production of Remembering Pirates at The Eternity Theatre on Thursday 13 October at 8.00pm.  This is the World Premiere of this work written by Christopher Harley. \nThe famed children of Peter Pan are now adults. Wendy’s expecting her first child\, John’s a jaded history teacher and Michael’s never around. Each remembers childhood adventures of pirates\, treasure and magic. But memory is a tricky thing.
