SUMMARY:Art & Culture - Visit to the Allens Collection (WAIT LIST)
DESCRIPTION:As our final event for 2018 we are excited to offer our Art & Culture enthusiasts the opportunity to visit The Allens Collection. \nThe works in the Allens’ Collection illustrate that the ‘art of painting and aesthetic concerns are still fundamental to artistic expression’. The Collection dates from the mid 1970s\, when Allens Law Firm moved into the offices of the then new MLC Building. What began as a way of ‘enlivening the office environment’ has grown to become a significant survey of painting over the following decades. The collection now has over a thousand works hanging in their offices. Not only do the art works create a vibrant work place but they also demonstrate an enduring commitment to young emerging Australian artists.  Allens have sought to collect a range of unique and challenging artworks from Australian artists. \nWe encourage you to RSVP early as places are limited. \nMaria Poulos\, the Curator of the Allens Collection\, will be our guide. We extend our sincere thanks to Allens and to Maria for their hospitality. \nDATE: Tuesday 20 November 2018 \nTIME: 11.00am – 12.30pm approximately. Light refreshments will be served during the event \nMeeting place: To be advised \nVENUE: Deutsche Bank Place – Level 28 126 Phillip Street (Corner Hunter & Phillip Streets) Sydney CBD \nCOST: $25.00 to a charity nominated by Allens \nPAYMENT OPTIONS: Pay on the day. Please have the correct money \nRSVP TO: Kay Nicholas at kay.k.nicholas@gmail.com \nEarly RSVP is highly recommended as places are limited \nRSVP BY: 10 November 2018

SUMMARY:Art & Culture - Private Tour of 'The Lady and the Unicorn' Tapestries
DESCRIPTION:Art & Culture commences 2018 with a rare opportunity for our members to experience the beauty\, scale and intricacy of ‘The Lady and the Unicorn’ Tapestry Series. \nOn loan from the Musée de Cluny\, this tapestry series is a masterpiece of Medieval French Art that has captivated viewers across the centuries. \nRevered as a national treasure in France\, and known as the 15th-century ‘Mona Lisa of the Middle Ages’ The Lady and the Unicorn tapestry cycle will be making its exclusive appearance in Australia at the Art Gallery of NSW through a generous and exceptional loan from the collection of the Musée de Cluny – Musée National du Moyen Âge in Paris. \nThe six large tapestries each depict a richly costumed lady flanked by that most mysterious animal\, the unicorn\, with jewel-like millefleur (‘thousand flowers’) backgrounds. The tapestries present a vivid meditation on earthly pleasures and courtly love. They can also be viewed as an allegory of the five senses – sight\, hearing\, taste\, touch and smell – plus a sixth ‘internal’ sense – heart\, desire or will – which was widely known at the time. \nA visit to The Lady and the Unicorn will allow a close encounter with one of the world’s greatest treasures. \nDATE: Tuesday 20 February 2018 \nVENUE: Art Gallery of NSW\, Art Gallery Road\, The Domain\, Sydney NSW 2000 \nTIME: Meet in the foyer of the Art Gallery no later than 9.15am for a 9.30am tour. \nCOST: $25 Payable on the Day \nRSVP TO: Kay Nicholas at kay.k.nicholas@gmail.com or 0438469044 \nRSVP BY: 9 February 2018 \nPlease note that registration for this tour by 9 February 2018 is essential as our numbers determine the number of guides that are required. SUMMARY:'Remembering Pirates' - a SWIC Friends & Partners Evening at the Eternity Theatre
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]SWIC has booked 30 tickets at the Darlinghurst Theatre Company production of Remembering Pirates at The Eternity Theatre on Thursday 13 October at 8.00pm.  This is the World Premiere of this work written by Christopher Harley. \nThe famed children of Peter Pan are now adults. Wendy’s expecting her first child\, John’s a jaded history teacher and Michael’s never around. Each remembers childhood adventures of pirates\, treasure and magic. But memory is a tricky thing. Was it just make-believe or could it have been real? And now adulthood is full of pointless responsibility. If only Peter Pan would return. \nMembers wishing to attend should phone Tania Holloway at The Eternity Theatre Box Office on 9331 3107 to book and purchase seats. Payment is direct to the Theatre. Please quote ‘SWIC Group Booking –Remembering Pirates’ \nDATE: Thursday 13 October 2016 \nTIME: 8.00pm \nVENUE: The Eternity Theatre\, 39 Burton St\, Darlinghurst Sydney NSW 2010 \nCOST: $40.00 pp \nPAYMENT: Direct to the Eternity Theatre Box Office – Phone: (02) 9331 3107 \nMembers should phone Tania Holloway at the Eternity Theatre Box Office on (02)9331 3107 to book seats and pay directly. SUMMARY:Special Activity - Tour of Kensington Street Precinct - WAIT LIST
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]On Thursday 26 May 2016 we will tour Sydney’s exciting new Kensington Street Precinct with Nicky Ginsberg\, Creative Director; enjoy Lunch in Spice Alley; and ‘Meet the Concierge’ at The Old Clare Hotel. \nJoin Nicky Ginsberg on a tour of the transformed and adaptively revitalised Kensington Street precinct. Forming the eastern boundary of the $2 billion Central Park urban village on Broadway\, Kensington Street has been reborn as Sydney’s latest laneway – a new home for restaurants\, cafes\, small bars\, markets\, artists\, galleries\, innovative retailers\, and creative types\, combining heritage architecture with bold contemporary ideas. Saving the terraces was critical\, having become isolated by surrounding developments. Many original features\, including joinery and staircases remain. Step inside and you’ll be transported to the early settler days of Sydney\, when houses\, rum stores and stables sat side by side. Other key heritage elements have been saved including the former Carlton and United Brewery offices and warehouses. \nAt the conclusion of the tour enjoy a special SWIC lunch in Spice Alley and then ‘Meet the Concierge’ at the Old Clare Hotel for a tour of Sydney’s newest boutique hotel. In creating the new ’Old Clare’\, Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects wanted to tap into Sydney’s history by combing a Victorian brewery headquarters with an Art Deco hotel to form the Old Clare Hotel. \nPlease note that this activity is limited to 20 places  \nDATE: 26 May 2016 \nTIME: 11.30 am – 2.00pm \nVENUE: 1 Kensington St\, Chippendale NSW 2008 \nMeet at the main Entrance of The Old Clare Hotel \nCOST: $25.00 which includes a taste of Asia light lunch. \nPAYMENT OPTIONS: \nPayment Option 1: By Credit Card through the Cart at the bottom of the page \nPayment Option 2: Online (direct deposit) into the SWIC bank account \nAccount Name: SWIC Inc. \nBSB No: 112-879 \nAccount No: 431-019-281 \nDescription: Kensington + your initial and surname \nRSVP TO: Kay Nicholas at Kay.k.nicholas@gmail.com OR 0438 469 044 \nRSVP BY: 16 May 2016 \nTRANSPORT: \nPublic Transport – a 10 minute walk along George Street from Central Station or bus along George Street. SUMMARY:Tour of NSW Anzac Memorial - Hyde Park
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Our Special Activity for February is a tour of Sydney’s Anzac Memorial. It commences with a 15 minute Remembrance Ceremony followed by a 1.5 hour tour. \nThe Memorial is a place of meditative silence\, serene calmness and tranquillity and is regarded as one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in Australia. The design was the collaboration of Sydney architect Bruce Dellit\, along with English immigrant artist and veteran of the Great War\, George Raynor Hoff. The granite-faced Anzac Memorial is the centrepiece in a network of paths through Hyde Park that pass the Pool of Reflection. The exterior of the building features 16 seated buttress figures and four standing corner figures. Each of these figures is in the uniform of a sailor\, soldier or nurse. The flat-faced exterior of the Anzac Memorial contrasts with the curves of the interior spaces. At the heart of the Anzac Memorial is the bronze statue ‘Sacrifice’\, created by George Rayner Hoff. The Hall of Memory features a ceiling with over 120\,000 gold-plated stars\, one for each of the men and women from New South Wales who served overseas in the Australian Imperial Force. At ground level in the Hall of Memory\, curved niches are engraved with the battle honours of the four principal areas in which Australians saw active service during the Great War. The niches include Gallipoli\, France and Belgium\, Egypt and Palestine and the world’s oceans. \nVenue: ANZAC Memorial\, Hyde Park\, Sydney \nMeeting Place: Reception Desk located in the Exhibition Hall\, Hyde Park \nTime: Start – 10.50am  Finish – 12.30pm  Please note:  The Remembrance Service commences at 11.00am \nCost: There is no cost but this is a private tour and the staff are paid. Final numbers must be provided by the close date. A donation would be greatly appreciated. \nRSVP to Kay Nicholas at Kay.k.nicholas@gmail.com by 17 February 2016 \n  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
