SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - Ultimo Historical & Architectural Walking Tour (TOUR 2)
DESCRIPTION:Due to popular demand this tour is being repeated on 29 October 2020. \nColonial settlement of the inner city urban village of Ultimo began in 1803\, when 34 acres was granted to surgeon\, John Harris\, on lands traditionally inhabited by the Gadigal peoples of the Eora nation. \nIn the 1890s Sydney Technical College was established\, putting Ultimo on the cultural map. Twentieth and twenty-first century additions of educational buildings have reinforced Ultimo’s reputation as a centre for learning\, while its surroundings became increasingly industrial in nature\, including slaughterhouses\, quarrying operations and rental properties. \nOn this two-hour walking tour\, you will see and hear amazing stories about the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre\, a university building that has been described as the most beautiful squashed paper bag\, and a building about a pandemic.  Adding to the tour is a beautifully designed college built in Romanesque Revival Style which features carvings of Australian animals and flowers in the facade. \nThere is so much to see and hear about this urban village\, including the Goods Line which was transformed from a disused freight railway. \nDATE: Thursday 29 October 2020 \nTIME: 10.00am – 12.00pm \nLIMITED TO MAX 15 PEOPLE \nVENUE: Meet at Powerhouse Museum Forecourt\, 500 Harris Street\, Ultimo NSW 2007 \nCOST: $34 per person \nPAYMENT: Pay by credit or debit card on the Payments page of the website. Payment to be paid at the time of booking. Your name will be confirmed upon the receipt of payment.  First come first served. \nRSVP TO: activity.swicsydney@gmail.com Attn. to Kesty Pringgoharjono – Monthly Activities Coordinator – with a note about your payment. \nRSVP BY: 22 October 2020 \nTRANSPORT: There are many options to get to Central Station and the Powerhouse Museum is a short walk from there

They made a plan for Castlecrag to be developed as the perfect garden suburb surrounded by trees. \nTour leader Ben Gerstel is a local architect\, and he will reveal the suburb’s development from its earliest days as well as the most interesting architecture in its hilly streets by architects as familiar as Harry Seidler and as little known as Hugh Buhrich. \nDATE: Thursday 24 September 2020 \nTIME: 10:00am – 12:00 noon \nLIMITED TO MAX 15 PEOPLE \nVENUE: \nMeet at Castlecrag Quadrangle Shopping Village\, 100 Edinburgh Road\, Castlecrag.
