SUMMARY:Art & Culture Ron Mueck - Encounter Guided Tour: Tuesday 17 February 2026 Art Gallery of New South Wales Naala Badu building
DESCRIPTION:Ron Mueck: Encounter brings an unparalleled selection of the acclaimed Australian artist’s sculptures exclusively to Sydney. \nSince revitalising figurative sculpture in the late 1990s with his exquisitely crafted realism\, Melbourne-born Mueck continues his profound observation of human experience and emotion. His captivating figures\, scaled from the monumental to the minute\, embody themes such as birth and death\, alienation\, and togetherness\, tenderly inviting us to explore our relationship with the world. \nAt the centre of the exhibition is Havoc\, a new immersive work featuring a group of larger-than-life fighting dogs\, created especially for this moment. Oversized\, yet charged with a quiet\, unsettling intensity\, Havoc invites viewers into a space that is at once intimate and ominous. \nThis exhibition encourages audiences to connect with Mueck’s sculptures through encounters that feel viscerally physical. Drawing the artist’s past sculptures into dialogue with the new\, the show reflects on the sensitivity and significance of Mueck’s work within our tense contemporary times. \nA Sydney exclusive\, Ron Mueck: Encounter marks the artist’s most significant solo exhibition in Australia in over a decade\, and his first in Sydney since 2003. \nDATE: Tuesday 17 February 2026 \nTIME: 9.30am -11.30am \nVENUE: Art Gallery NSW\, Naala Badu building\, lower ground floor. \nADDRESS:  Art Gallery Rd\, The Domain Sydney NSW 2000 \nMEETING PLACE:  Welcome Hub in the outdoor Welcome Plaza of Naala Badu\, (the new building) \nTime: 9.20am for a 9.30am private tour by AGNSW Experienced Lead Guides. \nTOUR DURATION – 45 – 60 minutes \nCOST OF GUIDED TOUR: \n\n$55: Adult rate\n$50: Seniors Concession rate\n$43 NSW Art Gallery Members (please advise your membership number)\nNote: As from September 2025 the AGNSW charges a $5 surcharge pp for tours commencing prior to the Gallery opening time. SUMMARY:Art and Culture Tuesday 15 July 2025 - Yolŋu power: the Art of Yirrkala
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Art Gallery of New South Wales\, North Building for a private tour. \nFor almost 100 years artists at Yirrkala have shared art as a means of cultural diplomacy – as a respectful assertion of power in its diverse forms\, from influence to authority\, sovereignty\, strength\, energy and pride. \nThis exhibition showcases the extraordinary artists of Yirrkala in north-east Arnhem Land\, Northern Territory\, and the power of their art from the 1940s to the present. Our guides will introduce us to the significant moments in Yirrkala’s history when artists have consciously altered their practice\, developed new styles or embraced new mediums. In covering multiple generations\, the exhibition highlights familial connections and cultural continuation. It also contextualises the work of individual artists within the broader school of artists from Yirrkala and surrounding Miwatj Country\, whose contribution to both Australian and\, increasingly\, international art\, is profound. \nDate:  Tuesday 15 July 2025 \nTime:  9:30am (please arrive 10 minutes before the tour start time) \nDuration:  45 minutes – 1 hour \nTIME: Meet at ‘The Hub’ in courtyard North Building AGNSW \nVenue: Ainsworth Family Gallery in Naala Badu Art Gallery of NSW\, Art Gallery Road\, Domain\, Sydney NSW 2000\, \nCost:  $25 adult and $22 concession (winter exhibition promo rate)  \nRSVP TO:  Kay Nicholas Email: kay.k.nicholas@gmail.com Mobile: 0438469044 \n RSVP BY:  8 July 2025\, please RSVP before payment. SUMMARY:Art and Culture – Visit to Cao Fei: My City is Yours Exhibition - Art Gallery NSW North Building
DESCRIPTION:Leading Chinese contemporary artist Cao Fei brings the buzzing energy of the city to the Art Gallery of New South Wales for the artist’s first major solo exhibition in Australia\, is a Sydney-exclusive exhibition staged as part of the Sydney International Art Series 2024–25\, featuring key works from the artist’s 30-year career\, including the premiere of two new commissions. \nVoted by Art Review Magazine in 2023 as one of the art world’s 10 most influential people\, Cao Fei has documented China’s rapid urbanisation\, globalisation and digital revolution for more than two decades\, interpreting the energy of the contemporary metropolis in mesmerising films\, photography and large-scale interactive and immersive installations. \nSpanning the Ainsworth Family Gallery’s 1300-square-metre space in the Art Gallery’s Naala Badu building\, Cao’s exhibition explores China’s rapid urban\, technological and social transformations from the Y2K period to today. Designed by the artist and Hong Kong’s Beau Architects\, the exhibition takes the form of a cityscape. Divided into a series of civic zones – a central plaza\, a theatre\, a restaurant\, a factory and a haven for spiritual contemplation – the exhibition’s design is inspired by China’s recent urban transformation. \nDATE: Tuesday 18 March 2025 \nTIME:  12 noon to 2.00pm (approximately) \nVENUE:  Art Gallery NSW North Building Level: -2 \nADDRESS:  Art Gallery Rd\, The Domain Sydney NSW 2000 \nMEETING PLACE: at New North Building:  Level – 2 adjacent to entry to the exhibition \nTime: 11.55am for a 12noon introductory talk. \nPLEASE NOTE: Given the nature of the exhibition the Art Gallery do not conduct guided tours of this exhibition. DESCRIPTION:Dear SWIC members\, \nThis January 2025\, Art and Culture Activity will combine with the Monthly Activity to offer our members a chance for a curated viewing of the Magritte Exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW. \nRené Magritte’s paintings of clouds\, hats\, pipes and apples are among the most recognisable images of surrealism. Renowned for his deadpan\, realist style\, the Belgian artist depicted ordinary objects and everyday settings\, revealing them to be more mysterious and enchanting than we could ever have imagined. \nMagritte is an in-depth retrospective featuring more than 100 works\, most of which have never before been seen in Australia. It journeys from the artist’s first avant-garde explorations and commercial works in the 1920s\, to his groundbreaking contributions to surrealism\, his surprising provocations of the 1940s\, and the renowned paintings of his final years\, before his death in 1967. \nEncounter iconic paintings that highlight Magritte’s profound influence on contemporary visual culture and discover rarely seen works that reveal his subversive sense of humour and the fierce independence of his artistic vision. \nThe exhibition has been organised by the Art Gallery of New South Wales with the close co-operation of the Magritte Foundation\, Brussels and in cooperation with the Menil Collection\, Houston. It has been made possible with the support of the NSW Government through Create NSW’s Blockbusters Funding initiative and its tourism and major events agency\, Destination NSW. Along with Cao Fei\, also at the Art Gallery of New South Wales\, and Julie Mehretu\, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia\, Magritte is part of the Sydney International Art Series\, bringing the world’s most outstanding exhibitions to Australia\, exclusively to Sydney. \nDATE: Tuesday 28 January 2025 \nTIME: 9.15am for a 9.30am tour \nVENUE: Art Gallery of New South Wales: Old Building \nADDRESS: Art Gallery of New South Wales \nThe Art Gallery of New South Wales has two art museum buildings in the Domain overlooking Sydney Harbour on Gadigal Country. SUMMARY:Art & Culture - Guided Tour of Yiribana Gallery
DESCRIPTION:For those of you who attended our Art & Culture event in December\, ‘Discover the Art and Architecture of the new Sydney Modern’\, and for those members who have already explored the new building\, we have organised an additional guided tour on Tuesday 21 February 2023. The newly relocated Yiribana Gallery is the first gallery that visitors encounter in the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ new North Building. The inaugural display is inspired by a word from the Aboriginal language of Sydney: burbangana. Meaning to ’take hold of my hand and help me up’\, burbangana is akin to an invitation. It is imbued with generosity and care. It emphasises the connections between people. \nThe exhibited works touch on moments of burbangana in differing ways. Some consider notions of care and guidance through familial relationships. Others offer philosophies for living and profile the intricacies of cultural inheritance\, or they examine ongoing complexities of history and resilience. \nSeveral new acquisitions are displayed alongside collection highlights – including works by Richard Bell\, Emily Kame Kngwarreye\, Reko Rennie\, Yhonnie Scarce and Rover Thomas – showcasing the diversity of practice across the country\, and across time\, media and art styles. \nLorraine Connelly-Northey’s major commission Narrbong-galang (many bags)\, made from rusted and salvaged metals\, is prominently displayed in the 20-metre-long Yiribana window\, which is visible to the public both night and day. \nYiribana means ’this way’ in the Sydney language and was the name given to the Art Gallery’s dedicated space for the display of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art when it opened in November 1994. Yiribana has a rich legacy of highlighting the depth and dynamism of art practice across Indigenous Australia. \nDATE: Tuesday 21 February 2023 \nTIME: 9.30am -11.00am (approximately) \nVENUE: Art Gallery of NSW\, on Gadigal Country – North Building  Art Gallery Road The Domain\, Sydney NSW 2000. \nMEETING PLACE: The Welcome Hub in the Plaza of the new building. After cloaking at the desk outside the Gallery\, one of the Welcome Hosts will escort our group inside where we will be fitted with headsets and head off with our guide. The tour will last for approximately 1 to 1.25 hours.
