DESCRIPTION:Dear Art and Culture Enthusiasts \nDon’t miss this one! \nDisplayed over two floors of the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ historic South Building\, the Asian Lantern galleries present works from the AGNSW collection of Asian art\, which stretches from Indonesia to Mongolia\, from Japan to Iran. Both galleries feature vibrant exhibitions celebrating the richness and depth of a collection that began in 1879 and continues to develop. DESCRIPTION:Our May event is a guided tour of the 2023 Archibald Prize Exhibition\, fondly known as ‘The Archies’. The Archies open at the AGNSW on 6 May so we are fortunate to be amongst the first to view this much anticipated annual event with a SWIC only tour. Those attending will also have an opportunity to see the work of our budding artists aged 5 -18 in the Young Archies Portrait Competition. \nThe Archibald Prize for portrait painting is the country’s favourite and most significant art award. Since 1921\, it has highlighted figures from all walks of life\, from famous faces to local heroes\, reflecting back to us the stories of our times. \nThe Wynne Prize is awarded to the best landscape painting of Australian scenery\, or figure sculpture\, while the Sulman Prize is given to mural project in oil\, acrylic\, watercolour or mixed media. \nThe finalists and Packing Room Prize will be announced on 27 April. DESCRIPTION:For those of you who attended our Art & Culture event in December\, ‘Discover the Art and Architecture of the new Sydney Modern’\, and for those members who have already explored the new building\, we have organised an additional guided tour on Tuesday 21 February 2023. The newly relocated Yiribana Gallery is the first gallery that visitors encounter in the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ new North Building. The inaugural display is inspired by a word from the Aboriginal language of Sydney: burbangana. Meaning to ’take hold of my hand and help me up’\, burbangana is akin to an invitation. It is imbued with generosity and care. It emphasises the connections between people. \nThe exhibited works touch on moments of burbangana in differing ways. Some consider notions of care and guidance through familial relationships. Others offer philosophies for living and profile the intricacies of cultural inheritance\, or they examine ongoing complexities of history and resilience. \nSeveral new acquisitions are displayed alongside collection highlights – including works by Richard Bell\, Emily Kame Kngwarreye\, Reko Rennie\, Yhonnie Scarce and Rover Thomas – showcasing the diversity of practice across the country\, and across time\, media and art styles. \nLorraine Connelly-Northey’s major commission Narrbong-galang (many bags)\, made from rusted and salvaged metals\, is prominently displayed in the 20-metre-long Yiribana window\, which is visible to the public both night and day. \nYiribana means ’this way’ in the Sydney language and was the name given to the Art Gallery’s dedicated space for the display of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art when it opened in November 1994. The National Palace Museum\, Taipei\, holds one of the finest collections of Chinese art in the world. Accumulated by emperors over centuries\, this collection was\, for hundreds of years\, accessible only to the imperial elite. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]This is a rare chance to see masterpieces by the two leading figures of Mexican 20th-century art. \nThis exhibition presents 40 artworks from the renowned collection of Jacques and Natasha Gelman\, including outstanding self-portrait paintings and drawings by Frida Kahlo\, and major examples of Diego Rivera’s canvas paintings.  Alongside these artworks are approximately 50 photographs which provide insights into the artists’ worlds and their intriguing relationship. \nDue to the size and layout of the exhibition there is a limit of 15 people per group\, therefore we have organised for TWO private guided tours\, before the gallery opens to the public.  The first tour commences at 9.00am and the second at 9.30am.
