DESCRIPTION:In Conversation with NAS Archivist & Tour of Current Exhibition \nOur July event is an introduction to the history of the National Art School by NAS Historian and Archivist Deborah Beck\, followed by a guided tour of OCCURRENT AFFAIR with Gallery Coordinator\, Ashton Biddulph. \nOCCURRENT AFFAIR is a major exhibition featuring new and recent works by Brisbane-established Aboriginal artist collective “proppaNOW”. Established in 2003\, proppaNOW is one of Australia’s leading cultural collectives\, exploring the politics of Aboriginal art and culture\, and provoking\, subverting and re- thinking what it means to be a ‘contemporary Aboriginal artist’. \nThe National Art School\, on the site of the former Darlinghurst Gaol\, stands on Gadigal land. The School moved into the former jail buildings in 1922\, as part of Sydney Technical College\, later East Sydney Technical College. It gained autonomy as an educational institution in 1996 and became the sole occupant of the Darlinghurst site in 2005. DESCRIPTION:Guided Tour of the Old Darlinghurst Gaol (now NAS) \nGuided Tour of the Current Exhibition- National Art – Part 1 \nWe are excited to offer our Art and Culture enthusiasts the opportunity to visit The Old Darlinghurst Gaol (now NAS) and The National Arts School Gallery. \nThe old gaol site has been repurposed and is now one of Australia’s premier arts institutes. The buildings showcase some of Sydney’s oldest and best preserved examples of colonial sandstone architecture. The National Art School Gallery is situated in what was the “A” wing of the old Gaol. The original building c 1841 was completely refurbished in 2006 to serve its new role as the NAS Gallery. \nWe commence our visit with the lively historical ‘Old Darlinghurst Gaol Tour’ that sheds light on the fascinating history of the site. Following a morning tea break we are being hosted at NAS Gallery by Judith Blackall\, Gallery Manager and Curator. Judith will be our guide for the current exhibition- National Art –Part 1. This exhibition comprises works by 50 National Art School Alumni – 1947–2018\, (spanning 7 decades). Included are works by Charles Blackman OBE; Ken Done AM; Reg Mobassa; Peter Powditch AM: Leslie Rice; Tim Storrier AM. \nAt the conclusion of the Gallery visit you may wish to continue exploring the site however there is no access to classrooms or studios. \nDATE: Tuesday 18 September 2018 \nTIME: 10.30 am – 1.30pm   Gaol Tour: 10.30 – 11.30am;   Morning Tea: 11.30 -12.20pm; Current Exhibition Guided Tour: 12.30 – 1.30pm \nVENUE: Forbes St\, Darlinghurst\, NSW\, 2010\, Australia   NAS Ph:  9339 8686 \nMEETING PLACE: Meet at 10.25am just inside the main entrance in Forbes Street.
