SUMMARY:Theatre Group – ‘The Seagull’ at Roslyn Packer Theatre (STC)
DESCRIPTION:By Anton Chekhov\nAdapted by Andrew Upton\nDirected by Imara Savage \n  \nWhen life imitates art \nSigrid Thornton returns to the Sydney Theatre Company as the larger-than-life diva Arkadina\, in a new adaptation from Australia’s greatest interpreter of Chekhov and former STC Artistic Director\, Andrew Upton. \nIn a splendid country house beside a beautiful lake\, love triangles\, intrigue and thwarted egos are running amok. The ageing starlet Irina Arkadina has arrived for a romantic getaway with her much younger lover\, the novelist Trigorin. Arkadina’s son\, the struggling playwright Konstantin\, is besotted with a beautiful young ingenue from the next house over\, Nina. When a flirtation blossoms between Nina and Trigorin\, jealousy and ambition throw the whole party into various states of crisis. \nDirector Imara Savage last wowed STC audiences with her revelatory production Saint Joan (2018). In The Seagull\, Savage and Upton will bring Chekhov’s wry and offbeat sense of humour to the fore and present a beautiful investigation of the power of art and the complicated personalities that make it happen. \nThe first of Chekhov’s great masterpieces\, The Seagull is a rich\, funny and moving play that is unmissable for anyone who loves theatre. In the hands of these extraordinary artists\, we are in for something very special. \nApprox. duration 2 hrs 30 mins (including interval)\nContent Suicide \nDATE: Saturday 2 December 2023 \nTIME: 1.30pm (MATINEE) \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: Tickets are A Reserve $109\, B Reserve $104 \nJudith and Cherry have purchased seats D11 and D12 (A Reserve) \nTo buy your tickets visit www.sydneytheatrecompany.com \nPRE-THEATRE DRINKS/SNACKS & BOARDS (Optional): There will also be the option to join us for pre-theatre drinks/snacks & boards at The Theatre Bar at the End of the Wharf at 12 noon. SUMMARY:Theatre Group – ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ at Roslyn Packer Theatre (STC)
DESCRIPTION:By Oscar Wilde \nDirected by Sarah Giles \n Hilarious\, naughty and Wilde \nThe fabulous Helen Thomson (Death of a Salesman\, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis) is back in this outrageous\, entertaining and brilliantly camp new vision of one of theatre’s greatest comedies. \nOscar Wilde’s dazzling wit meets the lush and bracingly contemporary style of acclaimed director Sarah Giles. This production will see The Importance of Being Earnest’s skewering of Victorian London’s silliness and snobbery in what promises to be an unforgettable night of hilarity. \nAlgernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing are two best friends who are both living double lives. In the city they’re playboys with a libertine reputation\, but in the country they assume pious alter egos to get away from it all. Things get sticky when love enters the mix and the men have to keep track of who they’re pretending to be and when. Floating haughtily above it all is the withering Lady Bracknell – played by Thomson – Victorian London’s socialite extraordinaire and the gatekeeper of all things ‘high society’. \nThe gold standard of theatrical comedy\, The Importance of Being Earnest is a razor-sharp and endlessly relevant reminder of our tendency to get hung up on small trivialities while the important things in life pass us by. \nApprox. duration 2 hrs 20 mins (including interval) \nDATE: Thursday 14 September 2023 \nTIME: 7.30pm \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: Tickets are $111.00 (Seniors) \nJudith and Cherry have purchased seats B26 and B27 \nTo buy your tickets visit www.sydneytheatrecompany.com \nPRE-THEATRE DRINKS/SNACKS (Optional): There will also be the option to join us for pre-theatre drinks/small food or boards at The Theatre Bar at the End of the Wharf. SUMMARY:Theatre Group – ‘On the Beach’ at Roslyn Packer Theatre (STC)
DESCRIPTION:By Nevil Shute\nAdapted for the stage by Tommy Murphy\nDirected by Kip Williams \nStanding on the edge \nTwo of Australia’s great theatre-makers\, Artistic Director Kip Williams and playwright Tommy Murphy (Foxtel’s The Twelve\, Holding the Man) join forces for this world premiere STC commission: a vast\, poetic and haunting story of community\, dignity and love in dark times. \nIn 1957\, Nevil Shute’s classic novel On the Beach introduced the world to an uncanny post-apocalyptic vision that sees Australia as one of the last surviving outposts of civilisation on a planet destroyed by nuclear fallout. Two years later it was transformed into a classic film starring Gregory Peck\, Ava Gardner and Fred Astaire. \nA small group of friends in Melbourne – some local\, some survivors from the US Navy – are living out their eerily prosaic lives and loves in the wake of World War III. But when a mysterious distress call rings out across the Pacific Ocean\, the characters are called to choose between duty to the ones they love and duty to the human race. \nIn the spirit of past productions like Chimerica and The Harp in the South: Part One and Part Two\, Williams brings his sumptuous\, innovative style to match Murphy’s beautiful\, soulful writing. On the Beach is a new and gripping portrait of Australian society\, a prescient insight into the times we are living through and a deeply poignant reverie on the indestructible power of human connection. \nApprox. duration 2 hrs 40 mins (including interval)\nContent Suicide \nDATE: Wednesday 19 July 2023 \nTIME: 7.30pm \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: Tickets are $65.00 and $61.00 for this PREVIEW PERFORMANCE \nJudith and Cherry have purchased seats C19 and C20 \nTo buy your tickets visit www.sydneytheatrecompany.com \nPRE-THEATRE DRINKS/SNACKS (Optional): There will also be the option to join us for pre-theatre drinks/snacks at a bar in Walsh Bay. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' - Roslyn Packer Theatre (STC)
DESCRIPTION:By Oscar Wilde \nAdapted and directed by Kip Williams \nA breath-taking reimagining of an Oscar Wilde classic \nOscar Wilde’s century-old moral fable\, packed with witticisms\, is as devilishly wicked today as on its debut. \nSeeing himself in a dazzling new portrait\, an exquisite young man makes a Faustian wish for eternal youth. Dorian Gray throws himself into a life of wanton luxury\, drifting from the pampered salons of Victorian London to the darkest recesses of the capital\, and revelling in the splendour of his beauty which remains forever golden. Meanwhile\, the portrait – banished to an attic – becomes more and more grotesque. \nThis new interpretation of Wilde’s only novel is adapted and directed by Artistic Director Kip Williams. Collaborating once again with Eryn Jean Norvill (Suddenly Last Summer\, Romeo and Juliet)\, Williams’ re-imagining will see Norvill performing every role in the story in an audacious cascade of theatrical transformations. The inventive use of live video that made Suddenly Last Summer and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui so visually compelling will capture and amplify every move. \n“The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it.”  Lord Henry \nContent – Adult themes\, drug use\, suicide\, theatrical haze\, herbal cigarettes \nDATE: Tuesday 3 May 2022 \nTIME: 6.30pm (approx. duration 2 hours\, no interval) \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: Seniors Act 1 Season Ticket $84\, Adult A Reserve $110\, B Reserve $102\, Seniors $102 \nNote: The Convenors have purchased seats B21 and B22 \nTo buy your tickets visit www.sydneytheatrecompany.com \nPOST-THEATRE SUPPER (Optional): There will also be the option to join us for a post-theatre supper at a restaurant in Walsh Bay. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' (CANCELLED)
DESCRIPTION:By Oscar Wilde \nAdapted and directed by Kip Williams \nDon’t miss the return season of this smash hit\, in which Sydney Theatre Company gives this classic story a Wilde twist. \nOscar Wilde’s century-old moral fable\, packed with witticisms\, is as devilishly wicked today as on its debut. \nThis interpretation of Wilde’s only novel is adapted and directed by Artistic Director Kip Williams. \n“The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it.”  Lord Henry \nContent – Adult themes\, drug use \nDATE: Friday 20 August 2021 \nTIME: 7.30pm (approx. duration 2 hours\, no interval) \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nSEASON TICKET PRICES: Adult A Reserve $86\, Seniors cardholder $81 + Booking Fee \nCo-Convenors Judith and Cherry have purchased their tickets for Seats A20 and 21. \nTo buy your tickets visit www.sydneytheatrecompany.com \nPRE-THEATRE DINNER (Optional): There will also be the option to join Judith and Cherry for a pre-theatre dinner at Walsh Bay Kitchen\, which adjoins the theatre\, at 6.00pm. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - "Avalanche: A Love Story"
DESCRIPTION:This month Theatre Group will be seeing Avalanche: A Love Story. Direct from London it stars acclaimed British actor Maxine Peake and is a compelling story of hope and longing. \nBy Julia Leigh \nDirected by Anne-Louise Sarks \nWhen a woman rekindles an early love in her late 30s her whole life changes. Deeply in love\, she and her new husband want to have a child together and they make an appointment at an IVF clinic. So begins this story\, inspired by the writer Julia Leigh’s own personal memoir. \nThis international co-production with the Barbican Theatre was praised as “a must-hear story for our times” (Go London) on its UK premiere. It lays bare the daily oscillation between hope and doubt in a drama we can all relate to – about the dreams we have for ourselves\, the hopes we have for our futures\, and the goals we have for our families. \nAcclaimed for her “capacity for emotional directness and a fierce\, uncensored honesty” (The Guardian)\, Maxine Peake is a prolific theatre\, television and film actor. Australian audiences will know her from her astounding range of work\, including Netflix’s Black Mirror\, cult favourite TV show Shameless\, and an extensive list of BBC dramas. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - William Golding’s "Lord of the Flies"
DESCRIPTION:This month’s Theatre Group takes on a more serious note – Maybe there is a beast. Maybe it’s just us. \nWhen a plane crash leaves a group of schoolboys marooned on a desert island\, it isn’t long before they descend into rivalries\, chaos and violence. \nArtistic Director Kip Williams’ staging makes us look at Lord of the Flies with new eyes. An exciting ensemble of adult actors\, including Australian screen star Mia Wasikowska (Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland) will bring Golding’s island of boys to life\, showing how quickly small cruelties can escalate. More than just pig’s blood will be spilled. \nWilliam Golding’s Lord of the Flies is a 20th century masterpiece\, as relevant today as it was on its publication in 1954. In it\, Golding created an enduring modern myth\, examining humanity’s terrifying capacity for self-destruction. \nDon’t miss this powerful and thrilling retelling of a classic. \nAdapted for the stage by Nigel Williams\nDirected by Kip Williams \nContent warning – Adult themes\, violence\, strong language\, theatrical blood\, haze\, strobe lighting and complete theatrical blackouts. \nDATE: Tuesday 6 August 2019 \nTIME: 6.30pm – 1hr 45 mins (no interval) \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: We have purchased our tickets for $99 each with senior concession. SUMMARY:Theatre Group - "Mary Stuart"
DESCRIPTION:For the first two productions of the year we (Judith and Liz) have something of a theme going on.  We saw Kate Mulvany as Richard III a couple of years ago and her performance was so impressive we decided to ‘follow’ her. \nSo our first offering is her gripping adaptation of Schiller’s Mary Stuart for the Sydney Theatre Company. An empire is at stake and a queen’s life hangs in the balance. This is one of history’s great rivalries. Two powerful women of very different natures – Mary\, Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I of England – cousins but not friends. The play stars two of Australia’s best known actors\, Caroline Brazier (Dinner\, Rake) as Mary\, and Helen Thomson (The Harp in the South) as Elizabeth. \nDATE: Wednesday 20 February 2019 \nTIME: 7.30pm – 9.10pm (no interval) \nVENUE: Roslyn Packer Theatre\, 22 Hickson Road\, Walsh Bay NSW 2000 \nTICKETS: We have purchased our A Reserve tickets for $93 each with senior concession. To buy your tickets visit www.sydneytheatrecompany.com. The Box Office tells us they are selling fast. You snooze\, you lose! \nPRE-THEATRE DINNER: There will also be the option to join us for a pre-theatre dinner at Walsh Bay Kitchen\, which adjoins the theatre\, at 6.00pm. We will book the table when we know the numbers. \nRSVP TO: Judith Nguyen at nguyenjm@bigpond.net.au by 15 February 2019 \n \n************************************************* \nTHEATRE GROUP IN MARCH – Every Brilliant Thing \nIn March you can see Kate Mulvany\, the actor\, in a one woman play called Every Brilliant Thing by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe. \n“One of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression – and possibly one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see\, full stop”. The Guardian. \nThis performance is at the Belvoir Upstairs Theatre\, 18-25 Belvoir Street\, Surry Hills. \nWe are buying tickets for Tuesday 26 March 2019. The performance begins 6.30pm. Single tickets for this production (i.e. assuming you have not purchased a package as a Belvoir subscriber) go on sale from 29 January 2019. As this performance is in the round there are not really any ‘bad’ places to sit. Put it in your diary as we will not be sending a reminder about ticket sales. The event will be published in the Events Calendar. \nPurchase your tickets at belvoir.com.au or ring the box office on 9699 3444. \n
