SUMMARY:Behind the Scenes Glasshouse Tour at the Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:The Tropic of Capricorn is the most southern circle of latitude where the sun can be directly overhead. Its northern equivalent is the Tropic of Cancer\, and together they form the borders of the tropical world. The two tropics are about latitude 23\, which is why Latitude 23 is the name of the tropical glasshouses at the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney. \nOn the Behind-the-Scenes Glasshouse Tour at the Botanical Gardens in Sydney\, you will discover the wonders of their tropical plant collection and rare plants not normally seen by the public. This tour is a must for orchid fans\, aroid freaks\, and all those who appreciate the joy of growing plants indoors. \nThis tour begins at the The Calyx\, the horticultural display centre where the cafe is open from 8am and toilets are available. This is a walking tour in a behind the scenes workplace where our horticultural staff are working hard to maintain these gems of our plant collection. Enclosed footwear is preferred\, participants need to follow the directions of their guide and during the tour we will be entering hot\, humid tropical environments in relatively confined spaces within the glasshouses. \nThe tour finishes at the Fernery in the upper gardens near the Woolloomooloo gate opposite the Art Gallery of NSW on Mrs Macquarie’s Road. \nDo join us for this\, ‘behind the scenes’\, outing. \nDATE: Thursday 11 September \nTIME: 11.00 am – 12.45 pm. Please stay afterwards for coffee at a nearby café if you are able. \nVENUE: Meet at 10.55am at the Calyx\nCoffee/Lunch is at you own expense and you can choose to join us after the tour. \nCOST: $20.00 \nRSVP to. swic.activitymonthly@gmail.com   Attn. Caren Trafford\, Out N’ About Organiser\, \nPlaces are limited. \nAddress: The Calyx : Botanical Gardens : Sydney \n  \nPAYMENT OPTIONS: Please quote Out N’ About Glasshouse tour \nPayment Option 1 (Preferred):\nBy Credit Card through the Payments section of the website \nPayment Option 2: Online (direct deposit) into the SWIC bank account \nAccount Name: SWIC Inc. \nBSB No: 062-005 \nAccount No: 11889493 \n

SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - Bush Tucker Tour at the Royal Botanic Garden
DESCRIPTION:We will walk with our First Nations guide through the Royal Botanic Garden to learn more about Indigenous bush foods and how these foods were used traditionally and adapted to the modern plate and palate. On our one-hour tour\, we’ll journey through the Cadi Jam Ora garden and learn about some of the hottest bush foods on the market right now\, all while tasting some goodies yourself! The tour will involve pre-prepared tastings of finger lime\, wattle seed\, lilly pilly\, lemon myrtle and Davidson plum. \nPrior to this arranged tour\, we recommend a free add-on in the form of a visit to the Inside the Tide exhibit and some lunch at one of the Botanic Garden outlets. \nCombining the theatrical with horticulture\, Inside the Tide creates a surreal\, magical and playful display. Telling the stories of hero plants in three aquatic communities: Kelp Forests\, Coral Reefs and Seagrass Meadows\, wander through what feels like an under the sea experience and watch a pantomime come to life. Come face to face with giant sea creatures like the topiary blue whale\, a chandelier of jellyfish or blue ringed octopus with interactive elements both children and adults will enjoy. \nThis year’s display has also enlisted the help of hundreds of school children from across NSW\, who in 2021 created Codium seaweeds when undertaking educational workshops with the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney\, learning about the threats to coastal environments and how to best care for habitats. \nInside the Tide has over 20\,000 plants on display and is one of the largest living green walls in the Southern Hemisphere. Curated by the horticultural team at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and presented in partnership with Erth. \nMasks are currently mandatory at the Botanic Garden. \nDATE: Thursday 28 April 2022 \nTIME: 1.00pm- 3.30pm\nThe guided tour will commence at 2.30pm from the Garden Shop and run for one hour. \nWe will meet at 1.00pm for a free walk around the Inside the Tide exhibit and some lunch and be ready for our guide at 2.30pm. \nLimit of 25 people MAX \nVENUE: Royal Botanic Garden Sydney\, Mrs Macquarie’s Rd\, Sydney NSW 2000\n \nCOST: $27 \nRSVP TO: swic.activitymonthly@gmail.com with your name and mobile phone number and wait for confirmation of a place before paying \nPAYMENT OPTIONS: \nPayment Option 1 (Preferred):\nBy Credit Card through the Payments section of the website \nPayment Option 2: Online (direct deposit) into the SWIC bank account \nAccount Name: SWIC Inc. \nBSB No: 112-879 \nAccount No: 431-019-281 \nDescription: Monthly Activity + your initial and surname \nTRANSPORT: The Botanic Gardens are easily accessible from the CBD \nPlease check their website for information on parking. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Monthly Activity - Botanical Enigma: The Calyx
DESCRIPTION:As an extra activity in this five-week month we are going to visit the Royal Botanic Gardens where spring flowers should be at their best. The Calyx opened in 2017. Designed by PTW Architects with landscape architecture by McGregor Coxall\, it presents a striking geometric volume that is a protective layer and a lens that frames cinematic moments. Of further interest – the Calyx presents the most devious plants in the plant world. \nThe Calyx will re-open on 1 October with a new display – ‘Plants with Bite’ – and anyone who knows this place will know what a show they put on. If you haven’t been before\, you are in for a real treat. There is a café where we can have lunch or coffee. \nDATE: Tuesday 16 October 2018 \nTIME: 10.00am – 12noon \nVENUE: Meet at The Customs House at Circular Quay at 9.50am and walk up to the gardens – or meet at the entrance to the Calyx \nCOST: A gold coin donation at the Calyx.
