DESCRIPTION:Sub Base Platypus in North Sydney hasn’t always been a community recreation and work hub. Previously\, the historic waterfront site hosted a gas works\, torpedo factory and submarine base. \nFrom the late 1900s until the end of the 20th century\, the site met the energy needs of Sydney’s North Shore (1877-1937) and contributed to the defence of Australia (1942-1999). \nEager to journey through this layered history? This 60-minute tour is an opportunity to explore a historic destination that was off-limits to the public for 140+ years! \nAccompanied by a knowledgeable guide\, you’ll explore the lower and upper levels of Sub Base Platypus\, including the Torpedo Factory Precinct. \nUnveiled in September 2023\, this contemporary precinct boasts a decommissioned Mark VIII torpedo\, amongst other historical artefacts\, as well a sweeping view of Neutral Bay and an original\, three-piece artwork that celebrates Country. \nDATE: Thursday 27 June 2024 \nTIME: 10.45am for an 11.00am start \nFinish: 12.00 pm \nMEET: The tour meets at the blue torpedo on Level 2 of the car park area (on the High Street side). Paid parking is available in the High Street car park between 7am and 9pm daily. Entry is via 120 High Street. Visitors are permitted to park their vehicles up to a maximum of 3 hours per day.
