SUMMARY:Out 'n About - Rose Bay Naval History Walk
DESCRIPTION:We will take a 2 hour walk around Rose Bay and the environs on an Australian Naval History Walk\, led by a volunteer from the Naval History Society.\nThe Rose Bay area has a significant link to Australia’s naval history from 1912-1927. \nThe recruit training ship HMAS Tingira was moored in Rose Bay from 1912-1927. In early June 1942 Rose Bay & some surrounding suburbs were shelled by a Japanese I -class submarine which in the previous week was part of the Japanese Naval force that launched midget subs to attack Sydney Harbour. \nKey sites visited and described include: \nThe history of HMAS Tingira including the ship’s previous two lives & commentary on life aboard for sailors including photos. At the Rose Bay war memorial where we will provide an overview of the Japanese midget sub attack in Sydney Harbour on 31 May 1942. At one of the properties damaged by an unexploded shell in 26 Manion Rd\, there will be a commentary on the shelling of the area on the 8 June 1942 as well as commentary on a prominent local Indigenous man\, Bungaree who is buried in Rose Bay. The tour will end near Rose Bay shopping centre where we can stop for lunch/coffee.
